SOUTHEM COUNTRY REPORTS

Southem Forestry Country Reports are the essential reference for those with an interest
in what we like to describe as “the world’s most dynamic forestry countries”. The
countries included in the latest updating of the Southem Forestry Country Reports
include: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa, and Uruguay.
Each country review provides layers of background necessary to build a picture of the
countries’ geography, politics and economics, referencing forestry, wood flows and
forest industry developments and the trade in forest products. Bonus: Buy all seven
and get one free. For more information, email: info@southem.com

HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

. WORLD DEFORESTATION DOWN, BUT STILL ALARMING IN MANY COUNTRIES

- World deforestation, mainly the conversion of tropical forests to agricultural land, has
decreased over the past ten years but it continues at an alarmingly high rate in many
countries, according to key findings of FAO’s most comprehensive forest review to date,
The Global Forest Resources Assessment 2010.
http://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/40893/icode/

. BIGGER, MORE FREQUENT FOREST FIRES COULD BENEFIT PACIFIC

NORTHWEST - Many scientists warn that with a changing climate there's a good
chance that forest fires in the Pacific Northwest will become larger and more frequent –
and according to one expert, that's just fine.
http://tinyurl.com/fiupnwfires

. GUYANA, GUATEMALA AND SURINAME ARE NOW MEMBERS OF THE FOREST

-11 – The move for these countries to join the F-11, follows the outcome of a Ministerial-

3
level meeting of group members held in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, Stabroek News
reported. The F-11 group consists of countries with rainforests and is a forum intended
to increase effective cooperation and partnership in sustainable forest management
(SFM) in order to overcome the challenges of deforestation, a release on the
Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry website said.
http://tinyurl.com/fiuf11

. AFRICA’S FIRST LARGE-SCALE ‘KYOTO PROTOCOL’ FORESTRY PROJECT -

On the margins of the annual Africa Carbon Forum, a new initiative to bring
environmental and financial benefits to local communities in the impoverished highlands
of Ethiopia was announced recently, it’s reported. The Humbo Assisted Natural
Regeneration Project is said in the report to be “Africa's first large-scale forestry project”
to be registered under the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol.

PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR FORESTS VITAL - The Earth needs its forests more than
ever as climate change bites, but foresters must heed the needs of society if we are to
realise their benefits, Britain's top forester has warned. Tim Rollinson, Director-General
of the British Forestry Commission, and Chairman of the Global Partnership on Forest
Landscape Restoration, was delivering the prestigious annual Forestry Lecture in
Sustainability at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He said the
pressure on the Earth's resources, including land, were going to be immense as the
world's population grew to a forecast eight billion by 2025. At the same time, the
continuing drift of people to towns and cities meant they were losing their contact with
forests and their understanding of how crucial they are to life on Earth.
http://tinyurl.com/fiusupport

. FINITE CARBON AND LYME FOREST IN TENNESSEE FOREST CARBON

PROJECT - Finite Carbon Corporation has signed an agreement with Lyme Brimstone
Forest Company – a subsidiary of The Lyme Forest Fund, the forestland investment
arm of The Lyme Timber Company – to develop an Improved Forest Management (IFM)
project in Tennessee under the updated Climate Action Reserve (CAR) Forest Project
Protocol.

. SCIENTISTS FIND NEW GENES FOR CANCER, OTHER DISEASES IN PLANTS,

YEAST AND WORMS - From deep within the genomes of organisms as diverse as
plants, worms and yeast, scientists have uncovered new genes responsible for causing
human diseases such as cancer and deafness. The University of Texas at Austin
scientists exploited the fact that all life on Earth shares common ancestry, and therefore
shares sets of genes.

. RESEARCHER FINDS BENEFICIAL COMPOUNDS IN PURE MAPLE SYRUP –

Before you dig in to your next stack of French toast or waffles, you might want to pour
on pure maple syrup. That’s because University of Rhode Island researcher Navindra

4
Seeram, who specializes in medicinal plant research, has found more than 20
compounds in maple syrup from Canada that have been linked to human health, 13 of
which are newly discovered in maple syrup. In addition, eight of the compounds have
been found in the Acer (maple) family for the first time.

Via Applied GIS and RS:

. HOW TO GENERATE DEM - Aurelie Shapiro writes: “I was recently asked about
deriving a DEM for Madagascar. I know the ASTER DEM products are generally best
available, but our colleagues said there were errors...if one wanted higher resolution - is
it worth creating a new DEM? how does one go about make one? Stereo pair images?
What satellites data are typically used? Radar? any ideas on a method, and who
generally does this typs of work would be very appreciated. Cheers! –Aurelie”.

. NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN HYDROLOGY AND REMOTE - Hugo Ahlenius writes: I

am preparing a little review related to hydrology and food security, and I would like to
get tips (and references) regarding new developments related to hydrology:
Groundwater assessment with remote sensing; and, estimation of hydrological
parameters from meterological data. I am interested in both new findings/research, as
well as databases and monitoring programmes! Cheers, Hugo.
