was fortunate enough to sit on the INDEX 2012 steering committee this year, along with Pallavi Dean,
design director, Pallavi Dean Interiors, Sinmar Al
Said, managing partner, Internal Line Interior Design
and Richard Wagner, architect, director of events, AIA
(American Institute of Architects) Middle East.
Dmg events will make a number of changes to the show
this year including a late night opening til 9pm on the
third day, a VIP party at Attitude in Al Quoz for key buyers
on the jrst night and an agreement with the Egyptian
Furniture Export Council to partner UAE designers with Egyptian manufacturers
and display their furniture in the Bastika old quarter of Dubai.
Scarlet Opus will no longer run its Trends Tour and instead, both myself and
Dean will organise a showground tour, picking out the best companies to look out
for in the coming months.
There will be exhibitors from up-and-coming designers from Hackney, in London, and the Contemporary Majlis Design Competition will have two winners; one
picked by a judging panel and the other, a Peoples Choice award.
Its exciting to see changes in the format of the show to make it even bigger and
better for guests. Next year, the event company plans to launch a more concise
online exhibitor directory and will move the show to May 2013, in conjunction
with The Ofjce Show.
Dont forget the annual Commercial Interior Design Awards will be held during
INDEX 2012 on Tuesday, September 25, at Jumeirah Emirates Towers and you only
have until July 25 to submit your nominations online.

THE BIG ART COMPANY CREATES A WALL FINISH FOR VIVEL PATISSERIE BOUTIQUE USING A MARMORINO
PLASTER EFFECT TINTED WITH THE COLOURS OF CINNAMON, PISTACHIO AND BISCUIT
UAE: The Big Art Company, which
specialises in murals, jne art, scenic artwork, trompe loeil and faux
paint effects, has returned to Vivel
Patisserie Boutique, in Dubai Mall,
to create a kower garden, from now
until June 6.
The jrm, founded in 2010 by
Stephen and Samantha Chambers,
operates from a gallery and studio
space in Al Quoz, Dubai, and
created a wall jnish, made from a
Marmorino plaster effect and tinted
with the colours of cinnamon, pistachio and biscuit, for the patisserie.
We created a wall jnish that
complimented the Persian sweets
and cookies, said Chambers.
It meant a lot of product tasting,
which was no hardship, but we
wanted to capture the essence of
the sweets and bring a warmth and
richness to the shops.
test of time, but to also have striking elements to dejne the brand.
Each sweet, nougat, pastry and
macaroon is hand-made, which
means the shape and form are all
slightly different. The display units
are created in diametric opposition,
to accentuate and highlight the
products. Simple and functional
koating slabs, solid lines with maximum product display in dark wenge
wood, stone and granite.
The main challenges were the
imposing support columns close to
the main entrance.
The column in Dubai Mall is
positively monolithic, but it became
the catalyst for creating a new jnish
to highlight rather than disguise
the structure. We used a jet black
venetian plaster, to give a rekective
marble feel with Persian stencils in
gold leaf paint, added Chambers.

PAUL AND ELLEN BISHOP, OF BISHOP DESIGN
ASSOCIATES, RAISE THE ROOF WITH THE
LAUNCH OF THEIR BOUTIQUE SHOWROOM IN
AL BARSHA, DUBAI
UAE: Husband and wife team, Paul
and Ellen Bishop, of Bishop Design
Associates, has partnered with local
suppliers to launch a showcase of
design at its ofjces in The Pinnacle
Building, Al Barsha, Dubai.
The showroom is not open to the
public and is strictly by appointment only and the products are
exclusively sold to clients the jrm
has designed for.
We wanted our clients to get
inspired by design and to be able to
touch and feel our creations, not
only on a material board but in real
life, said Ellen Bishop.
It is often difjcult for customers
to visualise your design even with
the help of state-of-the-art visuals,
material and furniture boards.
Secondly, Paul and I realised the
suppliers we deal with do not get
enough exposure and the chance to
display their products well enough.
Often they invest money in showrooms, which the end user rarely
visits. Therefore, we sat down with
a selected few after we had signed
5,000 square feet and simply said:
Would you be interested in displaying your products with us and
we will display them in ways you
might not have thought of before,

To use it, networkers jnd things

then pin them to their board.
They can also follow other users

DEVINA DIVECHA, REPORTER, COMMERCIAL INTERIOR DESIGN, GIVES HER OPINION ON PINTEREST AND WHETHER ITS USEFUL OR NOT.
On the surface, Pinterest looks like a really cool online scrapbook,
where users are encouraged to organise and share things you love.
In spite of the website being used by millions of people across the
world, I cannot, in good faith, become a Pinterest user until the copyright infringement issues are resolved. As a writer and an amateur
photographer, holding copyright of my works is important. As the
owner to my creations, I should be allowed to decide how and where
to share my work. Posting text or photographs on the internet does
not mean I give up my copyright. I still possess it, as do many other
artists who use the internet as a means to share their work, and in
the way they choose.
Pinterest users arent, as a rule, sharing their own work. Theyre
pinning and sharing other peoples work, who may not be happy
for their work to be distributed without their consent. Granted,
Pinterests Terms of Service does warn users not to post content
that infringes other peoples copyright, yet thats something people
generally dont read anyway.
Another issue with Pinterest is technical while whatever images
shared on its website do link back to the owner, the images are
hosted/uploaded on Pinterests own server. If ever linked to these
hosted images, the original author of the images cannot be credited.
When users pin something, its giving a third-party website the right
to host the image on its server and even the right to sell it.
Users need to realise Pinterest is not just showing us a thumbnail
and linking back to the original site its storing the full-sized image.
Why then would anyone bother jnding the source if you can see the
high res image on the inspiration board? This means trafjc and hits
of the owners website suffers in the process.
In this way, users are unknowingly making themselves liable to get
into legal trouble, as opposed to Pinterest being held responsible.

DESIGNER Q&A
A senior designer at Design Work Portfolio, Dale Cesar Najarro landed in the UAE in 2005, and worked
as an architect and designer at Samuel Creations SA
until 2010 when he joined his current jrm.
Najarro graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture
from Cebu Institute of Technology, Philippines. His jrst award
was the Annual Design Award for Architecture Students 1985
while competing against students from four architecture
schools in the Philippines.
Since graduating from university, he has worked with
various architectural and engineering jrms, and gained experience in architecture and interior design in creative space
planning and graphic work.
During his jrst few years as a professional, he was exposed
to different Asian design cultures found in countries like the
Philippines, Hong Kong, Vietnam and China.
It was after this he set up his own private design practice in
the Philippines, working on residential and commercial projects, both as an architect and interior consultant. It was during
this time he kindled his interest in photography and furniture
design and has been slowly building up his portfolio in both.
Deciding that the time was right to spread out my wings to
a more diversijed culture environment, I came to the UAE,
Najarro said. At Samuel Creations SA, the majority of projects
he handled related to hospitality. He then had a chance to be

designers have always had the challenge of meeting the time constraints, I
think this is why all design studios work
long hours. We cant stop until we are
totally satisjed as details can make or
break our designs. To achieve a balance
between professional life and social life
is another challenge almost all good
designers share.
ANY TIPS FOR INTERIOR DESIGNERS ENTERING THE INDUSTRY?
One major aspect that should not be ignored by new graduates is their neglect
of functional aspects of projects, and
the client. We are not pure artists; our
creative pieces are not meant to hang
on walls. Rather, our creative ideas are
meant to be implemented, to be used,
and in most of the cases, generate projt
while being used.
Personally, the construction component must be fully understood by all
parties involved in the successful realisation of the project. Adherence to local
ordinance must be there by approving
authorities and basic building code
compliance. Early stage coordination
process must be a part of the design
concept; new graduates should avoid
the traditional scenario of giving everything in one go. Due to late coordination,
misunderstandings will occur because
some relevant information was not
incorporated or deliberately missed out,

2007, with the ofjcial inauguration taking place on October 12, 2011. For 2025 years now, weve been developing a
style that His Majesty is happy with and
my direct bosses are happy with its
a fusion of regional Islamic designs and
has an Omani theme to it, said Loader.
This design is the culmination of
what weve been working towards in
terms of Omani-themed palace architecture. This, you can say, is the apex of
what weve done so far, he added.

weighs a huge amount. But the proscenium itself is movable because its
got to roll back out of the way to revert
to a concert mode. Equally the boxes on
three koors have got to roll back and rotate in, so thats quite a task on its own.
The columns fold back as well. So
there are about nine or 10 different
movements that take place before it
can actually change from one particular
mode to the other. Its pretty complex,
said Loader.
He added the complex part of this
procedure wasnt about the machinery
in question, but the obstacle of integrating the machinery with the interiors. The
auditoriums interior is as lavish and
detailed as the front-of-house.
To tie that kind of interior design in
with those kinds of motions and movements, and make it a practical theatre in
terms of its ability to work, was a massive challenge, he said.
Acoustics was another consideration
for the designers. In addition to the
moveable shell and proscenium, a
number of other measures were taken to
improve sound systems in the space.

lined out and in presentation form, at an
early stage of construction, it became an
attractive proposal for the buyers, and
the developer was conjdent enough to

different tastes and requirements.

CACTUS CHAIR
Cactus chair by New York-based architect
Deger Cengiz is an experimentation that
compares the visual to the users experience. The existence of the barrel cactus
gives a temporary discomfort, even
though the user knows that the plant
behind the glass is not a real threat.

Khrs most audacious collection
to date, Shine consists of eight
koors in a variety of Oak, Beech and
Ash. A durable, high gloss, lacquer

a bold alternative to conventional
wood koor surfaces, while a metallic
infused wood grain adds to the character of the collection.
Tabac is a modern interpretation of
the traditional Oak koor, while Retro
a deep red-toned Ash evokes the
rich beauty of 50s post-war modernism. A subtle mother-of-pearl like

of energy, and a tendency to move and take action. This is why it is used in fast food venues, or
in sports spaces, and playgrounds. On another
hand, with a shorter wavelength compared
to red, green has a soothing peaceful loving
effect as it derives this vibration from the plant
kingdom of mother earth. It opens the heart
and releases the blocks and brings out unconditional love. It instantly connects individuals
with the higher human vibrational values. This
is why it is ideal in bedrooms, personal and
family spaces, hospitals and clinics. In operation rooms, the doctors work with blood for
long hours, which is why they wear green robes.
When they lift their eyes off the operational
table they are instantly calmed and the stress or
anxiety factor is subdued. Similarly, blue, has a
pacifying effect. It carries the vibration of focus,
reliability and trust. It connects to the truth and
essence of being. It is commonly used in school
and police uniforms and spaces in banks and
law institutions. When choosing a colour for
an environment, it is important to study the
psychology of space to incorporate a visual that
will balance all these elements equally.
Art & Coffee is a monthly event that Art Couture organises as part of its vision to promote
contemporary art in Dubai. Artists, art professors, curators and other guests talk about their
expertise once a month. It is an opportunity to
enjoy the beauty of art, learn something new,
and share cultural interests over a cup of coffee.
I was invited by Art Couture to talk about the
power of colour, which was followed by a live
demo of a soul painting. The talk matches the
theme of the morning events as these coffee
mornings focus on the appreciation of art and
enhancement of life in the simplest of ways and
is directed towards group interaction and fun.
Art Couture and The Third Eye will partner
in presenting a series of talks seminars and
workshops, which will educate on the transformational power of art and design.
