Playing video games, not Rusing social media, linked to poor exam results by
Rhiannon Williams, The Telegraph, 12th October 2015

The author of the article claims that playing video games leads to worse GCSMs
exams results. He proved his thesis with the outcomes of study conducted by
Nations Childrens Bureau in Northern Ireland in 2012. The advantage of nonplayers to frequent players is significant (36pp). On the other had he also
highlighted that pupils used to play traditional games (space invaders, football
penalty shoot-outs) improved English, maths and science results.
Mr Williamss other thesis concerns usage of social media portals. He emphasized
that there is no clear connection between time which pupils spends on social
networks and GCSMs results.
Last observation regards the access to the internet. He claims that students who
dont have access to the internet get best marks 39pp less frequently than
students who has granted access to the network. He also points out that
homeworks which requires internet usage have positive impact on consolidation
of pupils knowledge and leads to better GCSM marks.
Personally I agree with all above mentioned thesis except one regarding social
networks. Im strongly convinced that intense usage of Facebook, Twitter etc.
leads to dependency or even addiction. Pupils who tend to be active on Facebook
cant avoid instants checking of fellows activeness and become unable to focus
on primary tasks.

The obsession with global warming will put the lights out all over Britain by
Charles Moore, The Telegraph, 6th November 2015
The article concerns global warming as a prevailing topic for upcoming weeks.
The author of the article brings a few real or quasi real reasons or effect of
climate change and follows experts opinions.
He started his article describing unusual phenomenon of windless Wednesday in
southern England. That led to real threat of power outage and temporarily
increased the purchase price of the electric power.
In opposite Mr Moore brings a bizarre statement of Charlotte Church who claims
that war in Syria as well as obesity, female genital mutilation and TV license
evasion were caused by the climate change.
The key part of article concerns the EU policy on emissions reduction and a
vicious circle of global warming, power shortage, increasing demand and
worldwide obsession.
Renewable sources, mainly wind farms, fulfills 19 per cent of energy demand in
Britain. Authoritative calculation shows that there is no margin between overall
demand for electricity and power supply. Situation will even go worse in 2016-17.
It means that during windless periods emergency sources of energy have to be
started. These emergency sources are mainly based on coal, gas, diesel and are
in contrary to green EU recommendation.
The situation becomes even more complicated due to the fact that further coalfired power stations are closing down, no new gas-fired stations are being turned
on. Nuclear power station at Hinklay Point is not ready to turn on.
The author describes how the forthcoming climate conference in Paris will
proceed. He predicts that reached agreement will be not legally binding and
developing counties will promise to cut emissions but they eventually wont . It
should be kept in mind that instead of goodwill of majority of countries who

agreed emissions limits, China increased coals usage of 17 per cent year-onyear.
In conclusion Mr Moore admitted that control of Worlds eco-fate is impossible
and economically ruinous.
