President congratulates NLD on leading in


the election

Burmas President Thein Sein has congratulated the National League for Democracy
(NLD) for establishing a lead in the election race a clear signal that the ruling party
has not yet conceded defeat.
NLD chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi yesterday sent letters to the president, his

commander-in-chief, and parliamentary house speaker calling for a meeting to


discuss a transition of government, following her widely perceived landslide victory
in Sundays polls.

As of the latest release of election results, Suu Kyis party has won 211 of 230 Upper
and Lower House seats declared. However, despite international media reports to
the contrary, the incumbent Union Solidarity and development party has not yet

conceded defeat, though its senior members openly admit they have been trounced
at the polls.
In response to Suu Kyis letter, Information Minister Ye Htut responded on behalf of
the president:
1. Thank you for your cooperation in the process of holding a general elections
on 8 November in a spirit of peace and stability;

2. I congratulate the National League for Democracy for taking a leading


position so far, according to the results released by the Union Election
Commission (UEC);

3. The government will respect the decision made by the voting public, and will
implement a transfer of power in peace and stability according to a set
timeframe;
4. The meeting requested by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will be implemented by

communicating with both sides after the duties of the election commission
[have been completed];

5. Cooperation must be established for a peaceful and stable transitional period


after these elections.
Meanwhile, the UEC has announced that a period will be allowed for political parties
to dispute the legitimacy of poll results starting today.
