Abstract:
I am truthfully and warmly indebted to my teacher Mr Stephen Humphrey, for regulating and
guidance he has provided me throughout the semester. I am sure it would have not been
possible without his help. Besides I also like to thank my parent to support me and my friends
as well to provide me information and resources.
Introduction:
This is an assignment of making a proposal for a hospital namely Shouldice Hospital. It is
an 89 bed healthcare facility situated in Toronto, Canada. On a sprawling 130 acres the 17000
square foot facility is housed which specializes in repairing external abdominal hernias.
Currently 7600 surgeries are operated every year on patients from USA and Canada. It was
established by Dr. Earle Shouldice circa in 1940. Throughout the assignment, with the link of
Shouldice Hospital there will be a major research on literature review, philosophy and
methodology as well, some research techniques and analysis will be performed.
Rationale:
My research will focus on the operation management of the Shouldice hospital and how it is
really operated and to identify their problems by providing recommendation as well. This is
needed because of the impact it keeps on the people, society as well as on the environment
and economics as well. Operation management is a main part of any organisation. In 2011
Forbes magazine reported that nearly three quarters of all CEOs approached from an
operation background. On the other hand operation management can be illustrated as the
management of the process of conversation, which renovates labour, land, management
inputs and capital into expected outputs of services and goods. It is also unease with the
operation systems and design for manufacture, transport, service or supply. (WWF). So
from this illustration it is also acceptable for Shouldice hospital as well as they have the
experienced staffs and materials and for these they are really providing good services and
being benefited. The competitive advantage of Shouldice boils down within 4 keys to
progress, and they are:

Thoughtful employee policies

However Shouldice has some problems which cannot be denied and the solution of these
problems are important to overcome and widen its reputation more. It is not able to capitalize
upon the great demand for the service. Recently a concern is arisen about other hospitals are
utilising the Shouldice name though they are not following the Shouldice procedures. On
Saturday there is no operation service. There is a concern about the regulatory environment in
Toronto. So a negative regulatory environment may vastly impact the operation and future of
the organisation. Due to Canadian govt regulations there is also a problem regards it
expansion.
Research question:
Research question is all about organising elements for a topic under study. It concentrates on
investigation into a specific topic area and points all aspects of the research project, such as
literature search, data collection, and design of the study, data analysis interpretation of
results and also the track of the discussion(wwf)
My research question is:
What factors make Shouldice Hospital different from other hospitals?
Besides research question there is corresponding hypothesis as well:
Other hospitals are vastly de-motivated of the infrastructure of Shouldice hospital.
Other hospitals are hugely motivated of the infrastructure of Shouldice hospital.
From my research question I would discuss about their positive and negative sides and within
operating system. In hypothesis I will widen the concept with critical evaluation.
