1 - CALIBfATION OF SAFETY CIRCUIT

1.1 General Information

The safety circuit must be calibrated if the board, phase displacement condensers, tube or mains frequeis
other than 50Hz have been replaced.
For circuit calibration, the anode must be put in rotation and it is advisabSe as foilows:

DEMO mode with DIP 3 SW1 of board 01 -170 switehed ON

Manual mode with at least 200 mAs

In this mode, no X-rays come from the unit and measurement time is sufficiently tong.

If necessary, the anode can be started even by short-circuiting the two collector and sender pins of the iC
photo-combiner. in this case use an insulated tool
The two safety circuits of the rotating anode starter must be calibrated so that an anomaly in at least one of tN
two circuits that causes the current to drop below the reference valu does not atlow or tnerrupt the exposure

normal
ALARM

ALARM

During the calibration phase, undesired safety circuit trpping could be an obstacle. If this happens, it is advisa
to exclude it by reducing, even to zero, the tensin on TP3 and TP4 through RV1 and RV2.
In special cases, the safety circuit can be completely exduded by short-circuiting JP4.
During calibration make sure that the anode is rotating.

1.2 Calibration
During a sufficiently long exposure, measure the tensin on TP1, then adjust RV1 until the TP3 tensin is 65%
that measured on TP1.

3 - FUNCTION CONFIGURATION

--

PCB 92-074-3

3.1 - Enabling braking

At the end of exposure, the anode rotation is braked only in order to avoid the noise of the bearings rolling.
Braking the anode generates heat in the casing and contributes to its rse in temperature. If it is subjected
particuiarly heavy work, it must be disabted.
Here is an example of thermal calculation, to demnstrate the above:
Start=1 ,400 J average exposure-2,000 J braking-2,800 J (COMET tube)
As can be seen, because of the large diameter of the anodic disk, the COMET tube braking develops h=
nearty equivalent to that at START + EXPOSURE.

JP1=open
JP1=ciosed

The tube is braked

The tube is not braked

3.2 - Braking time

The time required to brake roaton of the anode dependa on is diameter.

JP3=closed

3.3 - Dsabling safety circuit

The safety circuit can be disabled only for servicing and calibration purposes by shoi
circuiting JP4.

3.4 - Changing mains tensin

The 92-074 board has its own power suppfy transformer and adapting the mains voltage is done by moving a

1 ~ DESCRIPTION
The X-ray tube used n this unit is the grounded cathode type.
The high tensin generator has positive polarity with rsped, to the yround.

>*
wp
M

""' T

The valu of high tensin required is set by the CPU thiough an S^bit opto-insulated bus
IC6/IC7/IC8.
It is important to point out that the ground return of the opto-insulated commands is
physically nterlocked to the ray button. This means that the commands can be transferred
from the CPU to the high voltage feeder orily when this is activated.

The PWM controller reglales ttie tensin applied to the bridge that is necessary to obtain
the kV valu set by the CPU.
A loop band width of about 3 k.Hz and the feedforward of the regulator ensure perfect
stabilization of the high voltage valu and lolally cancel tho doubie frequency mains ripple
from the output wave form.
The characteristics described above allow for a perfect wave form without overshoot and with
a kV valu that is totally independent o the anodic curren! valu supplied to the tube.

The oscillograrn shows the high tensin form or 20 kV and 35 kV measured on TP1.
The kV wave form does not present overshoot in any operating stale and the kV valu is
iridependent of the current fed to the tube.

The current lirnitation of the chopper ensures perfec protection from current overloads at
output and a constant conductance of the kV rise time typical of 1.5 ms.

The table shows the kV vales and the corresponding vales measured on TP1/TP2.
NOTE

1) The:values in the table are valid f the reference voltage of the kV DAC measured o
TP8is5.00Vdc (standard calibration).
2) In exceptional instances kV vales can be calibrated with the RV5 trimmer (PCB 94
132). In this ristance the reference vales on TP1/TP2 are no longer valid. RegulatngJ
the kV made with RV5 is the only one for the whole range. It is advisable to correct the
28kV reference valu.
3) The kV vales are not affected by the mains voltage within the specified limits
4) The kV vales are not affected by the anodic load within the specified limits
5) DIP4 SW1 on board 01-170 must be in the ON position to exclude ray nterruption
measurement. The same effect can be obtained by pressing the [RESET alarm]+[kV-j
button, a valid function only for the next exposure
6) Measurement of the kV valu MUST be done exclusively in MANUAL mode since
Automatic mode exposure s always preceded by the pre-exposure impulse.
7) The kV vales are not affected by the replacement of one of blocks composing the HV
feeder and no recalibration is necessary after repairs have been made, if the kV valuej
has not been corrected with RV5

3 - CHECKING EXTERN AL kV
1)

Measurement of the kV valu with non-invasive nstruments MUST be done exclusively

with a MOLYBDENUM filter in those units with a Mo/Rh selectable filter and never with a
cornpressor between the X-ray source and the tool.
2) Measurement of the kV valu done with non-invasive instruments s affected bv the
instrument's linearitv error dependinq on the kV. It s advisable to refer to the nstrument
manual and n particular to the indications about corrective coefficients dependinq on the
kV and the thickness of the Molvbdenum filter. A ube that shows metallization problems
on the ray window does not allow correct non invasive measurement of the kV and
MUST neverthless be replaced.
3) The most reliable and precise measurement is done with an external HV dividen
Other measures usted in the preceding paragraph remain valid.

1- INTRODUCTION
The unit has an Automatic Exposure Control (AEC) that is among the most advanced
available on thejnarket today.
Operation of the" AEC is based on the actual density of the organ to be examined, measured
by a very brief X-ray impulse called "pre-exposure".
This is the only way of knowing the density of the organ that, as such, cannot be validly
shown by its thickness.
The radiation [r] read by the detector during pre-exposure shows the density of the organ and
after being converted to a number that is inversely proportional to it.it will be used on the
process of exposure control that will continu in a completely numeric form, except for the
Dose integration.

The above figure shows a time schematization of the exposure concept in ZERO POINT
technique, with completely automatic kV and mAs.
The parameter [p] derived directly from the [r], the density of the breast being examined, s
used as a poiner on two look-up tables containing the kV and mAs necessary for obtaining
an image with the right blackening and contrast to fully satisfy any Quality Protocol in the
Mammography field today.
A high valu [p] corresponds to a small density organ and low vales of kV and mAs are
taken from the tables.
A low valu [p] corresponds to a large density organ and high vales of kV and mAs are
taken from the tables
With the kV and mAs vales taken from the tables, the exposure that was interrupted after
the pre-exposure impulse is resumed.
The kV vales in the table cannot be modified, but four different tables are made available to
the operator, with different kV profiles suited to different requirements that go beyond the
possibilities offered by the well-known High Contrast (HC) and Low Dose (LD) techniques.
From the control panel, the operator can not only select the technique that he feels most
suitable at the time, he can also make fine-tuning in steps of 0.5kV on the kV range selected.

The scope of this procedure is to crate the right blend amongst the system components fo
obtaining the required level of blackening and ts constancy within the variability limits o
breast density with the mnimum dose possible.
Some key information will be provided below on how to obtain a good image with minimun

dose.
1.2 - Selecting film/screen combinaion
For mximum image quality, it is advisable to use only film/screen combination
recommended by he manufacturer.
The United States regulations have made this recommendation a requirement.
The X-ray cassettes for mammography use have only one intensifying screen that convertirle X-rays to light that mpresses the image on film.
Every screen has ts own ray/light conversin factor that must be suited to the film to bi
used.
Films for mammography use are single emulsin and have various sensitivities an<
contrasts.
An appropriate choice of these producs is reflected in image quality. We leave thi.'
responsibility to the user, dutifully pointing out the difference in dosage that this can entail.

The difference is considerable: 480/190=2.5 times!
1.3 Developer
Film for mammography use has treatment characteristics that are very specific and difieren
from those used for other film.
A dedicated developer is recommended for treating mammography film, which guarantee;
temperature and development time suited to the specific film.
Development temperature is generally between 34 and 35 C and has a marked influence o
the radiological dose necessary to obtain the required blackening.

2- CONTROL TESTS
In this configuration, calibrating the detector sensitivity is of mximum mportance in order to
guarantee the correct correspondence of the exposure parameters taken from the kV/mAs
tables, with the organ density.
To faciltate control and calibration of parameter [r] each unit has a plain block of Plexigls
(dummy) for a rapid control and a simple re-calibration of the time. The dummy s a relative
reference that is characterized in the factory after system calibration with an absolute
reference.
The dummy is an integrating part of the unit, can be used also by the operator and must
always be available to the operator throughout time.
During the test the system must be configured as shown n the following figure.

Position the 7 cm dummy so that t covers he detector perfectly
Repeat the test for each of the three fields of the PHTM900 (triple detector).
This configuration was selected in order to elimnate all the variable components that
could be found between the beam source and the detector.

After exposure, check the [r] valu and if it difers more than +/-10 from the valu shown on
the dummy, recalibrate the [r] parameer.
2.1 - OFFSET [o] CALIBRATION
The valu of the detector offset appears in the lower left of the display when one of the two
automatic techniques is selected. The offset valu depends on the temperature.
The valu must be checked after at least 5 minutes from turning the unit on and t should be
105 with PHTM 9000. The system loses its linearity if the valu reaches zero or exceeds
20. Great variations of the [r] GAIN regulation influence the offset valu and require
correction.
Check and correct if necessary the OFFSET valu for all three available fields.
2.2 - DETECTOR [r] GAIN CALIBRATION
At the basis of good system operation the valu of [r] s correct.
Valu [r] depends on:
a) Precisin of the kV valu
b) Precisin of the mA anodic current
c) Detector gain calibration.
Before proceeding with gain calibration, make sure that the vales referred to n points a)
and b) are correct.
The valu of [r] appears in the lower left of the display when one of the two automatic
techniques are selected.
The valu must be checked after at least 5 minutes from turning the unit on and t should be
the same as the valu shown on he test dummy +/-10.

3 - PROCEDURE PREPARATION
3.1 - Developer
The developer must be n perfect conditions for use with developing and fixing replaced a
day beforehand.
3.2 - X-ry cassette for tests
Select and mark a cassette that will be the only one used or all the tests.
If possible, select the cassette with optical density as cise as possible to the average
measured on all those available.
3.3 - Film pack for tests
Make sure that there is enough film n the pack being used to complete the procedure.
Otherwise open a new pack.

3.4 - Test dummy

A Plexigls test dummy is supplied with each unit, made up of three 2 cm layers, one 1 cm
layer and one 0.5 cm layer.
In each layer there s a small steel sphere placed at an increasing distance from the left
edge.
These spheres identify the layers in order to guarantee that the position and the composed
layers can be repeated, important factors for correct calibration.
3.5 - O.D. reference X-ray
If there s no sensitometer, expose a film in manual 28kV technique, with a 4 cm dummy with
optical density between 1 and 2.
If this procedure gives rise to doubts on the stability of the developer, repeating the same Xray will provide a simple and quick estmate.
3.6 - Time for carrying out procedure
For best results, t is recommended to carry it out without interruptions.
3.7 - Anode flter combination
If the unit has an automatic Mo/Rh filter or bimetallic tube, manually select the correct
situation from the panel n order to avoid tripping by the automatic filter.
3.8 - Software installation
Crate a directory for it on the hard disk and copy all the files from the floppy disk to t.
Due to the use of the serial Communications port, this software cannot be used in DOS
emulation from Windows.
Restart the computer in DOS mode or, better yet, using the F8 function key at start-up,
before Windows takes control of the unit.

5 - LINEAR CALIBRATION OF OPTICAL DENSITY

5.1 - Selection o test layers
Before starting test X-rays, the number of Plexigls layers to be used must be defined, min.
3, max. 8, and their thickness.
The minimum procedure is based on three thicknesses, 2, 4, 6 cm.
For each dummy thickness selected, the relative valu of [p] must be checked to see that it is
in the center of a kV valu, and not near the margin between two kV vales.
If this point does not fall in the middle of the kV interval, there can be a difference of 0.5 kV
between successive exposures; this MUST be avoided.
For checking, refer o the chart on operation technique for calibration (STD, HC, LD, EXT),
focal spot and anode/filter combination.

Use the 0.5 thickness of Plexigls or else remove the compressor to make a distance from
the kV margin.
Repeat the test for all thicknesses that are to be used.
5.2 - Test X-rays and calibration data collecton
The following figure shows an example with three thicknesses of Plexigls: 2.5 cm, 4.5 cm,

and 6.5 cm.

Data collection is based on two x-rays for each thickness, with an optical density higher and
one lower trian the reference thickness.
After each exposure, the calibration data:

mAs, p, i
are sent from the mammography unit to the computer and can be received and displayed
using function 4 "RS232 COMMUNICATION SOFTWARE" from the main men.

The parameters for ach exposure are defined H if they refer to film with optical density
higher than the reference valu, and L in the opposite case.
In the example above, an optical density of 1.2 was selected.
To obtain higher or lower O.D. vales than the reference ones, the MANUAL DENSITY
CONTROL can be used to increase or decrease the mAs valu.
It'nriustbe remembered that the H and L vales of the O.D. MUST be far from the elbows of
the sensitometric curve.
If the optical density obtained is the same as the reference density, t is not necessary to
make another exposure for ihe same thickness, and the parameters obtained will be the final
ones for bilding the curve.

5.7 - ZERO POINT curve for the other operating modes
Every operating mode on the unit that is going to be used has its ZERO POINT curve that
must be calibrated n the same way described so far.
5.8 - Rhodium flter management
FLAT units may be equipped with an automatic Mo/Rh filter.
Filter selection is automatic and depends on breast density, verified during pre-exposure.
The TRIP POINT T can be programmed, but it is not advisable to change it unless there are
well-evaluated reasons based on the statistical readings based on the last 1300 exposures.
For the Rhodium filter to function, the calibration curve of the relative Anode Filter
combinatlon must be programmed.
During calibration of this curve, bear in mind that the part of the curve used will be more to
the right, beyond the relative p valu at the threshold point T.
., ;
A short part of the curve to the left of the T point could nevertheless be used if the operator
has manuaily selected the Rhodium Filter.
5.9 - Modificaron of the reference Density after calibration
After building the ZERO POINT curve based on the reference O.S. selected in the beginning,
it may become necessary to modify it.
Use option (O) to add or subtract a percentage valu to move the calibration curve up or
down, giving rise to an increase or a decrease of O.D..
5.10- Mximum breast density limit
With the DEATA PLUS software, it is possible to define a mximum work limit (LOW p)
defined as mximum breast density, to interrupt exposure after the sampiing impulse^
releasing a doseofless than 1 mAs.
The limit is defined according to he specific characteristics of each single installation, in
order to avoid releasing excessive doses, which could make the Film unusable as a

I Disabling an Operating Technique or the entire Film Screen is done by storing the relative
curve or curves with the valu of i=0 for the first pair of vales that correspond to p = 0.
Tempted exposure with Techniques with a curve that has =0 for p=0 does not start tube
lotation and generales the message "TECHNIQUE NOT PROGRAMMED"
p. 12 - MANUAL DENSITY CORRECTION
,The variationof Optical Density linked to each step of Manual Density control depends on
the specific characteristics of each Film/Screen combination.
For mximum conformity wih the specific requests of each Quality Protocol, all manual
;correcton steps of blackening can be programmed on the PC for all FILM/SCREENS.

6 - ONE POINT MODE CALIBRATION

In the ONE POINT mode, the kV are selected by the operator and the mAs are automatic.
This operating rfiode is based on the calibration data of the ZERO POINT technique,
opportunely compensted by correction factors defined according to the difference d in
seps of 0.5 kV, between the automatic ZERO POINT kV and those set by the Operator,
ONE POINT.
These correction factors are defined for three different cases, after building the ZERO
POINT calibration curve.

8 - REDUCED CALIBRA TION PROCEDURE

If the instrumentation necessary for DEATA PLUS calibration is not available, calibration of
the reference Optical Density may be done nevertheless, but in this case there s no
guarantee of obtaining suitable linearization.
Putting DIP 5 SW1 PCB 01-170 to ON, the foilowing functions of DEATA PLUS are reduced:

3 Film/Screens instead of 1 6
Only kV Standard range
Only Mo/Mo Anode Filter combination

The reference Optical Density valu can be corrected with the coefficient of % calibration.
Access to the percentage correction coefficient is obtained with DIP6 SW1 on board 01-170.
The variation of percentage correction valu is done with keys mAs+ and mAs- and the
relative valu appears on the display in the place of the Manual Density valu.

The variation of percentage correction valu is done with keys mAs+ and mAs- and the
relative valu appears on the display n the place of the Manual Density valu.

mAs(

Regulating the Optical Density must be done on a Mdium (4cm) dummy thickness,
repeating the sequence correction / exposure / Density check until the desired valu s
obtained.
In this configuration the unit has 3 preset curves in order to have different slants that allow a
limited and emprica! linearization of the Optical Density.
Density Linearization
After adjusting the Density to 4 cm, make a Film with 2 cm and one with 6 cm of Plexigls.
Compare the three Films and if the blackening is insufficiently constant, repeat the test with
another Film/Screen combination until the best compromise is found.

The memory capacity s suficient to contain the information regarding the last 1300
exposures.
For data collection use option 5 rom the start men of the DEATA PLUS calibration
software, after having connected the RS232 cable to the COM1 port.
The parameters in the memory will be stored in two files with a TEC and .MED extensin.
'The first one contains technical parameters to be used by the Service. The second contains
radiological parameters exclusively, for use by the user.
Every file starts with a comment that can be entered by the operator, date and hour of
identification are added automatically.
At the end of data collection a third file with an .STT extensin is generated automatically,
containing a statistical analysis of the data collected (see dedicated paragraph).
The .TEC, .MED and .STT files are simple ASCII files, compatible with all existing text
editors, from DOS Edit.com to the latest versin of Word. They are created in APPEND,
which means that, using a ame of a file already n use, new nformation s added at the end
of the existing file.
WARNING: perform this operation only from the hard disk.
After starting the program and defining the file ame and comment, actvate the transfer from
'the control panel of the mammography unit.

10 - STATISTICAL DATA
The data of the last 1300 exposures stored in the memory contain all the nformation for
making the tables that follow, automatically, at the end of the data download from the unit's
rnerory.
Ther are many ways that the data collected can be used by Health Physicists and service
technicians. By being able to modify some of the unit configuration parameters, they have a
valid instrument for evaluating the effects of the variations made.
The table that follows contains the simple count of exposures made, divided nto the two
focal spots.
This data s useful for understanding the type of use of the unit. A very low number of
exposures with Small Focus will emphasise that the unit is used mainly for Screening without
successive in-depth specific studies made with the enlargement technique.

The frequency that the three techniques, Manual, Zero Point and One Point, are used tells
the user's habits or operating preferences.
A high number of exposures n manual technique is normally due to performing biopsy
exams and exams on patients with silicone prostheses.
A significant number of exams in One Point technique should be studied with the user to see
f it is justfied by special exam requirements or f it conceals problems due to incorrect
calibration or poor development conditions, and therefore technically solvable.

The data in the next table allows us to evalate the tripping percentage of the Rhodium filter,

and therefore valid for comparing the data obtained with official statistics.

A significantly different percentage could be corrected by appropriately moving the trip point

Knowing the data regarding the Total Dose, Average Dose and Average mAs valu is
mportant for respecting the legislation on Radioprotection that provides for controlling the
dose released in radiographic exams.
The Mammographic exam is defined at Low Dose and the effective estmate of the Dose
necessary for obtaining a good image is fundamental for correct system management.
The Dose and mAs vales are directly correlated to the development and sensitivity
conditions of the Film/Screen combination used.
Comparison of the data collected on the same system in different periods and with other
similar systems allows an in-depth evaluation of performance.
The correct selection and administration of Development, Film and Screen can heavily
condition the Dose, in some cases being able to halve it.

kV of exposure
mAs supplied
distance from Focus to skin (resolution 5mm)
measured dose with dosemeter at a distance of 55 cm from Focus for
each kV valu and for each combination of anode and filter.

The dose is calculated at the end of an exposure.

The dose valu obtained s shown on screen. It can be printed on Film by the photo-stamp
and recorded n the unit for statistical purposes.
The Dose is visualized in mGy with a resolution of 0.01 from O to 9.99 rnGy, and 0.1 from 10
to 99,9 mGy. Beyond a 99,9 valu, HH.H will be displayed.
The print function on Film can be enabled or not by the user or by the Health Physicist.
To get reference doses, you need a calibrated external dosemeter.
This function s available as an optional and exclusively for units equipped with DEATAPLUS
for management of the automatic exposure system.

2 - MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
Configuraron and calibration of the dosemeter are based on the SKDOSEXX.EXE
application software for PC designed to work in a DOS environment.
Given that the PC COM1 serial port s used for transferring calibration data to the
Mammography unit, it is recommended to sart the DOS mode since the PC is switched on,
Le. before Windows takes the control of the session.
Starting DOS emulation from nside Windows could result n some problms due to the
special PC configuration.
For a correct program operation, it is also necessary that the Default Data file
SKDOOO.GY
appears in the work directory, as well as the .EXE file.

Inform the patient that the dose supplied does not represent a legal obligation. At discretion
of the person n charge of the unit, the dose valu can be mentioned or not n the X-ray.
Total enabling of the Dosemeter functions
In this case, the dose valu appears on the unit screen. It can be printed on Film by the
Photo-stamp and is recorded in the unit memory containing data of the last 1300 exposures
from which you can obtain some interesting statistical information.
Configuration data can be transferred to the unit at any time of the calibration phase of the
dosemeter and they can be further varied without losing any calibration data.

The correct measurement of this parameter is crucial for the measure accuracy of the Dose.
Using a caliper, measure the distance between the upper plan of the arm and the focus
marker reproduced on the tube.
Enter data as referred to in tem 5 of option 5

2.3 Distance between focus and skin

Measurement of the distance between Focus and Skin takes nto account the type of fat or
offset paddle used.
For a correct operation of the Dosemeter, it s NECESSARY TO MEET examination
configurations defined, .e. fat paddles with Small Focus and offset paddle with Large Focus.
This s because compensation of such a measure is automatically done by the
microprocessor according to the Focus selected !
After selection of Large Focus, assemble the offset paddle, put a semi-rigid sponge
underneath and execute a compression.
Measure the distance from the focal spot to the lower plan of the paddle and at 60mm from
front edge (to the patient's thorax side).
The measurement at these parameters takes into account the deformations of the
compression system as recommended at clause A3.2.1 of the European Protocol of
Dosimetry in Mammography.
Push the BELL button together with kV button and read on screen the valu of the Focus
Skin distance measured by the unit.
The balance between the valu measured by the operator and the valu shown by the unit
shall be entered as described at clause 4 of option 5.
When this valu is negative, reduce the current valu by the negative quantity obtained.
The current valu appears on PC screen accessing the option 5 screen.

2.5 k V operativa interval for dose measurement

The dosemeter s able to keep its accuracy on all the kV range of the unit, against vales
read on the reference Dosemeter.
Dosemeters available on the market are not always able to supply reliable measures on all
the 21 / 35 kV range of the mammography unit.
For kV vales, for which it is not possible to obtain valid reference doses, you need to enter
the valu ZERO in the table to exclude the operation of the dosemeter at these vales.
2.6 Verification of calibration
Do not move the reference dosemeter from the position previously used.
Transfer calibration data to the Mammography unit by option 6.
Execute some exposures at various kV vales, noting the Dose measured by the reference
unit and the one shown by the mammography unit.
Calclate the percentage error verifying that it remains below 10%.
2.7 Perodical calibration
The Dose measurement depends on many parameters, among which the Tube efficiency
expressed n mGy/mAs.
This parameter, first among all, depends on the wear of the Tube and it decreases
proportionally with t.
Calibration of the dosemeter is then :
Suggested every six months.
Recommended every year
Calibration becomes compulsory on replacement of the following components:
INVERTER
HIGH TENSIN TRANSFORMER
X-RAY TUBE
RAYS FILTER

Or on installation of:
FILTROMAMM
When calibration of the dosemeter can not be executed during technical interventions
concerning the above parts, t is recommended to totally stop operating as described at tem

FLAT III TECHNICAL MANUAL

1 - INTRODUCTION
The compression device of FLAT consists of a motor with geared motor coupled to the worm
gear by an electromagnetic clutch also acting as compression power reducer.
This system, allowihg both a motorized and manual breast compression, is also equipped
with a series of interchangeable compressors of different sizes, with floor control pedis and
a luminous centering device.

2 - ADJUSTMENT OF THE COMPRESSION POWER

The compression power can be adjusted varying the voltage applied to the electromagnetic
clutch through a programmable supplier from control panel buttons.

3 - MANUAL COMPRESSION
Manual Compression is made possible by the clutch relase obtained by pushing
simultaneously both pedis.
When pedis are released, compression s maintained at the manually set valu if this is
equal or less than the power set on the control panel.

4 - MOTORIZED COMPRESSION
Using floor pedis, the operator can oprate Upward/Downward movements of the
compressor keeping his/her hands free.
The luminous centering device automatically switches on when the compressor lowering is
activated, In this case, the compressor starts moving with a slight delay to avoid additional
pressing n case you want to switch the centering device on again for a check, once the
breast is already compressed.
The lowering movement is mmediate when the centering device is already on.

5 - SAFETY RELASE
For safety reasons, the compression power is reduced to zero in the following cases:
1. Equipment in off position.
2. Vertical movernent of the arm
3. Rotation of the arm

METALTRONICA

CAP 3 Page 68 of 88

FLAT IIITECHNICAL MANUAL

6 - ADJUSTMENT OF MXIMUM COMPRESSION POWER

Mximum compression power, 150N or 200N according to the standard n forc n the
country of installation, is adjusted by a special trimmer located on the CPU 92-082 motherboard after having put to mximum the valu on the control panel.

During calibration, verify the compression power using a bathroom scales or a dynamometer.

NOTE
Compression voltage is applied to the clutch only during lowering. During ascending, voltage
is reduced to a just compressor weight supporting valu.

7 - MECHANICAL ADJUSTMENT OF THE CLUTCH

The gap between the electromagnet of the clutch and its pate is crucial for a good operation
of the system.
Too large gaps do not allow you to reach the mximum compression valu or could even
result n a failure to clutch.
Too small gaps can prevent a relase resulting in safety consequences for the system and
difficulties for a manual compression.
A lack of planarity between electromagnet and pate, apart from resulting in problems of
repeatability of the compression power causes an irregular movement of the carriage.
To adjust the gap you can use the four screws marked with number 11 of the assembly
drawing.

1 - ASSEMBLY/ DISASSEMBLY OF THE SAME TUBE

When the X-ray tube has to be replaced, pay attention to the black unes on the top of the Carm to allow an easy repositioning of the Tube support which can be the simple alumnum
wedge or the Filtromamm.
2 - REPLACEMENT OF THE TUBE
Brand and Model
The replacing Tube shall be provided with the CE Mark according to Directivo 93/42/EC for
Medical Devices and it shall be selected exclusively among those Brands and Models
approved by the manufacturer of the equipment.
Electrical Connections
Because of the various electrical connections, it is not recommended to replace a tube by
another having different characteristics.
Software
Each tube needs its own special Software to comply with load vales.
3-RAYS COLLIMATION
Dimensin of the irradiated field
Dimensions of irradiated field are fix and in function of the collimation pate used.
Collimation plates are manufactured in conformity to what specified n the reference
standards for mammography units.
Given that the unit is equipped with various interchangeable collimation plates, for this
procedure reference s made to size 18x24.
Position of the Irradiated Field
Position of the rradiated field can be corrected appropriately moving the tube to obtain
symmetry with respect to the Right and Left edges of the film and to minimize the out of field
radiation on the Thorax side.
Check of Position
To check the position of the field, use a film nserted into the cassette of the 18x24 potter
and a film inserted in a film envelope without screen located diagonally on the potter plae
so that its four angles can record the radiation external to the edges of the first film.
Also position two fat washers above the envelope to crate two reference points on
radiographs allowing their superposition.
Position of the Tube
The tube position reflects on the field position up-side-down because the beam pivots on the
collimator.
To move the beam to the right, move the tube o the left and vice-versa.
To move the beam forward, move the tube backward and vice-versa.
After reaching the position required, firmly tighten the tube fastening screws.
The measure of rays field on the image receiving plae shall be examined according to IEC
601-1-3 standards

4 - LIGHT/ RA YS Coincidence
No adjustment is required after removal/re-installaton or replacement of the tube.
An adjustment of the light field is possible using the screw which adjusts the inclination of the
collimator mirror.

A completely independent circuit, equipped with its own microprocessor, controls all on/off
phases of the unit.
The circuit is located on the 92082 board and is fed by the T1 transformer connected to the
mains supply.
The transformer is equipped with a 220/230/240 voltage change possibility.

2 - ON/OFF PHASES
The IC20 microprocessor controls a complex sequence of events at switching on and off.
SWITCHING ON
a) to avoid a high current inrush, RYS2 s switched on and after some seconds RYS1
excludes the damping resistance.
b) to avoid random characters on screen, LCD voltage s delayed.

3 - FUNCTIONAL VARIATIONS
The units without mobile panel have no motor or microswitch.
Various versions of the IC20 microprocessor are used in the two cases.
With fixed panel and relevant software, the JP1 selection bridge allows you to invert the
function of LED1.
JP1 = CLOSED LED 1 on with unit in off position
JP1 = OPEN LED 1 on with unit in on position

4 - TROUBLE SHOOTING
In case of'operation failure, check that conductors referring to connectors CN16 and CN28
are correctly fixed and directly check on IC20 signis relevant to parts connected to CN16
and CN28.
With unit in on position, voltage between terminis 3 and 4 of RYS1 and RYS2 shall be of
approximately 12 Vcc.
Accurately check micro-switches MSWIN and MSWOUT as their failure can result in
damages to the motor.
In case of failure of the panel output also check the geared motor and external gears.
Motor and micro-switches are obviously absent in those units which are not equipped with
mobile control panel.
In this case, a different versin of the IC20 microprocessor s used.
With a fixed panel and connected software, the JP1 jumper will allow the inversin of the
LED1 function :
JP1 CLOSED = LED 1 on when the unit s n OFF position
JP1 OPEN = LED1 on when the unit is in ON position.

IMPORTAN!
When the mobile control panel is in use, JP2 on the 92-082 board must be open and a
special IC20 different from the one concerning the configuration for fixed panel must be
used.

1 -DESCRIPTION
The Mo/Rh automatic filter is an optional accessory and it can be easily installed further on.
Filtromamm s sed.'to have a double ANODE/FILTER combination (Mo/Mo Mo/Rh) for a
better optrnization of the X-ray beam spectrum, in function of the real density of the
examined breast.
the breast density s quickly determined by a short exposure in ZERO POINTS technique
and the more appropriate ANODE/FILTER combination will be automatically selected
according to the breast density.
The Mo/Mo combination is used for exams of normal density breasts, whereas the Mo/Rh
combination is used for high density breasts.
The intervention threshold beyond which the Mo/Rh combination is selected, corresponds to
approximately 6 cm of RMI Equivalent Tissue and [r] = 62 for large focus (default).
After the sampling impulse, the valu [r] is compared with the reference level of 62 for
FILM/SCREEN 1 and 2 or with the selected level with the calibration software for the
FILM/SCREEN 3. If [r] s higher than the reference valu, Mo/Mo remains positioned, if [r] is
