The variety of games is almost unbelievable, with concepts varying from living your dreams to playing out a fantasy. The industry is huge, appealing to both adults and children alike. CUTS TO SHOT OF PRESENTER KIM Everyone has played some form of game in their lives. From board games, to games on consoles, and even on your mobile phones! But why is it that videogames are becoming so popular? And why do some people want to become professional players? Lets find out. In 2011, a study found that a shocking 64 million American children aged between 2 and 17 play video games. Thats a 9 percent increase since 2009! BACKGROUND FOOTAGE OF SIXTH FORM COLLEGE. KIM But why did such a significant increase occur in just two years? And just how bad is that number now, 4 years later?

In 2012, the gaming industry earned around $79 billion, with video game consoles bringing in $34 billion and mobile phone games bringing in around $10 billion. However as of 2015, the gaming industry has been making around $115 billion, with consoles bringing in $55 billion and phone games bringing in $21 billion. (Credit Statista) So clearly, mobile gaming has gotten more popular, but so has console gaming at a much faster rate. But, who is responsible for this increase? Do you play video games? These days board games tend to be something of the past, only dug out when the family stays over Christmas. However, in 2014 The Guardian found that the board game market has grown between 25% and 4-% annually since 2010. So, board games could be on the rise. KIM So, we have found that males are more likely to play video games, especially in competitions for money. In each generation, video gaming is increasing in quality, and therefore becoming more popular. But how far will video gaming go in the future? Will videogames become the new footballs?
