EXPERIMENT 1: The Vernier and Micrometer Calipers

ABSTRACT:
This report presents the proper usage of Vernier caliper and micrometer in measuring the
dimensions of different geometrically-shaped objects such as the aluminum cube, glass marble
and steel washer as a group to develop teamwork skills. The mass was measured using triple
beam balance and the dimensions were obtained with the help of Vernier caliper and micrometer
for the accurate calculation of percentage error which is the comparison of the given standard
and obtained (experimental) values. The percentage error attained from the calculation of the
density of aluminum cube is 0.67% using a micrometer and a 4.86% error was obtained from a
Vernier caliper. A 3.7% error is obtained in the usage of Vernier caliper in steel washer while
0.4% is the calculated percentage error in the glass marble. In conclusion, the use of micrometer
is more accurate than the Vernier caliper.

Question and Answer:

1.) Differentiate the Vernier and Micrometer scales.
The Vernier Caliper can only measure with an accuracy of 0.05 at its extreme
cases while the micrometer has an accuracy of 0.01mm and a capacity of 26mm. The
Vernier caliper uses a sliding Vernier scale to measure small movements of its inner and
outer jaws while the micrometer caliper has a calibrated screw to amplify small
movements or distances of its jaws to larger movements or rotations of the rotating scale.
Vernier Calipers can measure external diameters, internal diameters as well as depths
while the micrometer caliper only measures the external diameters. There are only two
decimal places on the measurements that can be obtained using the Vernier caliper while
there are three decimal places (the hundredth decimal is to be provided and assumed by
the person measuring) in the micrometer caliper.

2.) Draw the figure for the micrometer reading below.

a.) 3.68mm

b.) 1.59mm

3.)
State some of the errors that one might make in measuring length using both the Vernier and
micrometer calipers.
Errors that can be made while using both the Vernier caliper and the micrometer
caliper is human error and instrument error. You can over force the instruments, causing
your sample to deform. You can also under force the instruments, leaving clearance
(empty air) adding up to your measurement. The reader, without proper knowledge, may
also read measurements wrong and make wrong judgments. The instrument used may
have problems in itself for example, it may be deformed or loose or it may have problems
with the markings contributing to wrong measurements and miscalculations.
4.) Determine the percentage error for an observed value of 1.112 x 10 -5 is the standard value is
1.117 x 10-5.
