IntheearlySeventies,StanleyKubrickwasenjoyingoneofthemostextraordinarypositionsthe
filmindustryhasevergivenadirector/producer.HislastthreefilmsDrStrangelove(1964),2001:
ASpaceOdyssey(1968)andAClockworkOrange(1971)hadbeen,intheirdifferentways,global
sensations,allthreeearninghimBestDirectornominationsattheOscars,andsecuringhis
reputationasaperfectionistauteurwholoomedlargeroverhismoviesthananyconceptorstar.
"Kubrick"wasbynowanimprimaturofacertainstyle,andonethathiscurrentstudio,Warner
Bros,waseagertobankrollwhereveritmightleadthem.
Productiononhisnextprojectwasshroudedintheutmostsecrecy.ThecontroversyprovokedbyA
ClockworkOrange,especiallyintheUK,hadheightenedKubrick'slongstandingparanoiaabout
thetabloidpress,whowereapttocharacterisehiminturnasachilly,reclusive,borderline
psychopathiccontrolfreak.AlltheywereallowedtoknowwasthathisnewfilmwouldstarRyan
O'NealaseeminglyunKubrickychoiceofleadingmanandtheformerVogueandTime
magazinecovermodelMarisaBerenson.ItwastobeshotlargelyinIreland.EvenBerenson,when

wasinstructedtokeepoutofthesuninthemonthsbeforeproduction,toachievetheperiod
specificpallorherequired.
Neveranoriginatorofhisownscreenplays,KubrickhadinmindtoadaptThackeray's1844novel
TheLuckofBarryLyndon,asatiricalpicaresqueaboutthefortunehuntingofanIrishrogueand
thepositionhesecuresforhimselfintheEnglisharistocracy.ForsomeyearsKubrickhadbeen
wrestlingwithaprojectintheadjacentperiod,hislonggestatingbutabandonedfilmabout
NapoleonBonaparte,andtheswitchtoLyndongavehimthechancetoputsomeofthatresearchto
gooduse.Inparticular,herelishedthetechnicalchallengesofshooting"inperiod",andwas
determinednottoreproducethesetbound,artificiallylitlookofothercostumedramasfromthat
time.
AlmosteveryKubrickfilmisashowcaseforsomemajorinnovationintechniquein2001itwas
therevolutionaryvisualeffectsinTheShining,hismasteryoftheSteadicam.OnBarryLyndon,
KubrickandcinematographerJohnAlcottsetthemselvesthetaskofshootingasmanysequencesas
possiblewithoutrecoursetoelectricallight.Forthemanydenselyfurnishedinteriorscenes,this
meantshootingbycandlelight,afeatdifficultenoughinstillphotography,letalonewithmoving
imagestocapture.Formonthstheytinkeredwithdifferentcombinationsoflensesandfilmstockto
makethispossible,beforegettingholdofanumberofsuperfast50mmlensesdevelopedbyZeiss
forusebyNasaintheApollomoonlandings.Withtheirhugeapertureandfixedfocallength,
mountingthesewasanightmare,buttheymanagedit,andsoKubrick'svisionofrecreatingthe
huddleandglowofapreelectricalagewasmiraculouslyputonscreen.
Thestately,painterly,oftendeterminedlystaticqualityofBarryLyndonwasatleastinpart
dictatedbythisstylisticchoicelitonlybycandles,theactorsinthemanysequencesofdiningand
gamblingwereunderinstructiontomoveasslowlyaspossible,toavoidunderexposure.Butitfits
perfectlywithKubrick'sgildedcageaestheticthefilmisconsciouslyamuseumpiece,its
characterspinnedtotheframelikebutterflies.Forthestunninglybeautifulexteriors,inwhich
Irelandplaysitself,England,andPrussiaduringtheSevenYears'War,KubrickandAlcottlooked
tothelandscapesofWatteauandGainsboroughthedaylitinteriorsowealottoHogarth,with
whomThackerayhadalwaysbeenfascinated.
AlcottwouldwinanOscarforhisamazingwork,aswouldKenAdamandRoyWalkerfortheir
scrupulouslyresearchedartdirection,theoftenoutlandishbuttotallyconvincingcostumesof
MilenaCanonero,andLeonardRosenmanforhisarrangementsofSchubertandHandel,whose

addictivelyfunerealSarabandeinDMinorstompsominouslyinthebackgroundofthevarious
duels,likeamarchtothegallows.Thefilmwasgreeted,onitsrelease,withdutifuladmiration
butnotlove.CriticswereitchingtorailagainsttheperceivedcoldnessofKubrick'sstyle,thefilm's
selfconsciousartistryandslowpace.Audiences,onthewhole,ratheragreeditwasnotthe
commercialsuccessWarnerBroshadbeenhopingfor.
Anairofdisappointmentseemedtocloudthefilm'sreputationformanyyears.Ithassatdormant,
gorgeousbutremote,waitingpatientlyforreevaluation.Watchingitnowisaspellbinding
experienceonmanylevels,butitmakesyourealisethatthemostundervaluedaspectofKubrick's
geniuscouldwellbehiswaywithactors.Thesupportingcastisaglitteringprocessionofcameos,
notfromstarnamesbutfromvitalcharacterplayers.LeonardRossitermakesthefirstunforgettable
impressionasCaptainQuin,thepompousandpricklysuitor
ofBarry'scousinNora(GayHamilton)heraisessnobbishindignationtoanartform.TheIrish
stageactorArthurO'SullivanhasjusttwoscenesasthenotorioushighwaymanCaptainFeeney,but
managestobebothdisarminglypoliteandterrifying.
PatrickMagee,whoplayedthecrippledwriterinAClockworkOrange,hasalovely,quizzicalturn
astheavuncularChevalierduBalibari,aninveteratecheatatcardswhotakesBarryunderhiswing.
Andthelistgoeson,takingintheextraordinaryMurrayMelvinasapursedlippedreverend,Marie
KeanasBarry'smother,FrankMiddlemassasthespleneticSirCharlesLyndon,HardyKrgerasa
Prussiancaptain,StephenBerkoffasapriapicgambler,LeonVitaliasBarry'sresentfulstepson
LordBullingdon,andKubrickregularPhilipStonehewasAlex'sfatherinAClockworkOrange,
andthedeadcaretakerGradyinTheShiningastheLyndonfamilylawyer.
Subjectedtothedirector'sinfamousregimeofmany,manyarduoustakes,theirfaceslightupthe
filmandtheera,likeaseriesoffine,carefullyhung,oilportraits.Kubrick'scastmayhavebeen
requiredtositforthesefordaysandweeksonend,butnoonecouldsaytheresultsweren'tworth
it.
