APPLYING CAPACITORS IN THE HARMONIC ENVIRONMENT
The t w o p r e v i o u s i s s u e s o f K i l o v a r B r i e f s d i s c u s s e d t h e s o u r c e o f
h a r m o n i c s and e f f e c t s o f a p p l y i n g c a p a c i t o r s i n a h a r m o n i c
environment.
This issue w i l l discuss t h e proper application o f
c a p a c i t o r s i n a harmonic environment.
The economic b e n e f i t s of a p p l y i n g c a p a c i t o r s t o improve t h e system
power f a c t o r can be a c h i e v e d i n a harmonic environment w i t h o u t
compromising t h e system o r t h e equipment. T h i s i s accomplished by
u s i n g t h e c a p a c i t o r bank c o n n e c t e d i n s e r i e s w i t h a r e a c t o r as a
f i l t e r c i r c u i t t u n e d t o some s p e c i f i c f r e q u e n c y .
The o b j e c t i v e s o f t h e f i l t e r d e s i g n a r e as f o l l o w s :
1. P r o v i d e t h e r e q u i r e d v a r s f o r t h e s y s t e m .
2. A s s u r e t h a t t h e f i l t e r i s a v e r y l o w i m p e d a n c e s h u n t a t
a t c r i t i c a l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c harmonic f r e q u e n c i e s o f t h e
p a t h f o r t h e predominant harmonic c u r r e n t s or,
3. T u n e t h e f i l t e r b r a n c h t o b e i n d u c t i v e s o t h a t t h e h a r m o n i c
c u r r e n t s i n j e c t e d i n t o t h e system a r e d e a m p l i f i e d by t h e
p r e s e n c e o f t h e f i l t e r c a p a c i t o r bank.
I n t h i s a r t i c l e , we w i l l d i s c u s s o b j e c t i v e 3.
A reactor i s
s e l e c t e d t o t u n e t h e c a p a c i t o r bank t o a f r e q u e n c y t h a t i s below
t h e f i r s t c h a r a c t e r i s t i c harmonic o f t h e harmonic source.
The
advantage o f t h i s approach i s :
1. L o w e r c u r r e n t r a t i n g s f o r t h e e q u i p m e n t .
2. L e s s s t r i n g e n t t u n i n g r e q u i r e m e n t s .
Additional capacitor vars are required i n f i l t e r applications t o
compensate f o r t h e v a r l o s s i n t h e t u n i n g r e a c t o r s .
T h e f i l t e r t u n i n g f r e q u e n c y i s s e l e c t e d t o b e a p p r o x i m a t e l y 5%
b e l o w t h e f i r s t c h a r a c t e r i s t i c h a r m o n i c o f t h e system.
