Unit:
Duration:40
ATopic: Modern periodic table

Stage:14+

CURRICULARSTATEMENT
Pupil develops factual knowledge ,conceptual knowledge, procedural
knowledge and metacognitive knowledge on the concept of modern periodic
table through observing ,inferring and communicating.

CONTENT ANALYSIS
New terms: Modern periodic table

FACTS

1.Moseley modified the Mendeleev periodic table.

2.There are 18 periods and 7 periods.
3.Properties of elements depend on the atomic number.

CONCEPTS

The modern periodic table is the improved version of mendeleevs periodic table.

The elements are arranged in the assending order of their atomic numbers there
is a repetition of their properties at fixed intervals.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Enables the pupil to develop,
1.Factual knowledge on modern periodic table by,

Recognises the attempts made by others.

2.Conceptual knowledge on modern periodic table by,

Explaining modern periodic table.

Demonstrating using ICT.

3.Procedural knowledge on modern periodic table by,

Doing and observing activities based on it.

Raising questions.

4.Metacognitive cognitive knowledge on modern periodic table.

Focusing on modern periodic table.

5.Develops different process skills like inferring, observing and communicating.

6. Develops a positive attitude towards science.

PRE-REQUISITES
Students are familiar with the attempts made by Mendeleev, Lavosier, John Newland,
Dobernier.
TEACHING LEARNING RESOURCES
Activity card, jigsaw puzzle
REFERENCE BOOKS

Textbook of standard 9

Handbook of standard 9

CLASS ROOM INTERACTION

PROCEDURE

PUPILS RESPONSE

INTRODUCTION
Yes we know..
You are familiar with the attempts made
by the few scientists for classification of

elementsIsnt it?
Who are those scientist?
Lavoisier, Dobernier, John Newlands,
Mendeleev
What happened to those attempts?
All the attempts have some demerits.
What about the contribution of
Mendeleev?
Next we can say about the periodic table
that we are now using.
ACTIVITY 1
Showing the picture of periodic table
using ICT.
This periodic table is known as modern
periodic table.
This is the improved version of
Mendeleevs periodic table.
This was modified by Mosley.
When elements are arranged in the
ascending order of their atomic number
,there is repetition of their properties at
fixed intervals.
ACTIVITY-2
Students are divided to groups. Asked
them to find out the number of periods
and groups in the periodic table, shown in
the ICT and note down in the activity card.
ACTIVITY-3
Now we can study the arrangement of
elements in the modern periodic table in a
different way.

(Student are divided to groups)

In groups you should solve the JIGSAW
PUZZLE.
(The periodic table which is divided to
parts is given to students)
Each of the students are advised to
observe the periodic table shown in the
ICT and solve the puzzle.
ACTIVITY-4
Students are given activity card which
contains the names of elements.
Write the number of period and groups in
which the elements are included in.

Now have you understand the

arrangement of elements in the modern
periodic table.
CONSOLIDATION
Mosely modified the mendeleev periodic
table. It is called the modern periodic
table. The elements are arranged in the
ascending order of their atomic number
there is repetition of their properties at
fixed interval.

REVIEW QUESTIONS

ELEMENT

GROUP

PERIOD

1. Mg is included in which group?

2. Name the elements included in the 3rd group?
3. Who developed the modern periodic table?
What is the difference between Modern periodic table and Mendeleevs periodic table?

FOLLOW-UP-ACTIVITY
Make a JIGSAW PUZZLE for each of the group elements.
