We start with some basic techniques widely used in many problems involving
hexagons. The first two examples illustrate some standard vector manipulations.
Problem 1. Let ABCDEF be a convex hexagon and let M1 , M2 , M3 , M4 , M5 , M6
be the midpoints of AB, BC, CD, DE, EF, F A, respectively. Prove that M1 M4
M3 M6 if and only if

Note that
M1 M4 + M3 M6 + M5 M2 = 0,
thus these vectors can form a triangle (call it T ). It is enough to observe that each
of the conditions M5 M22 = M1 M42 + M3 M62 and M1 M4 M3 M6 is equivalent to the
fact that T is a right triangle and the conclusion follows.
Problem 2. Let A1 A2 A3 A4 A5 A6 be a convex hexagon. Denote by Bi the midpoints of the sides Ai Ai+1 (indices are taken modulo 6). Prove that triangles B1 B3 B5
and B2 B4 B6 have the same centroid.
Solution. Denote by G1 the centroid of 4B1 B3 B5 and by G2 the centroid of
4B2 B4 B6 . From the quadrilaterals G2 G1 B1 B2 , G2 G1 B3 B4 , and G2 G1 B5 B6 we get

In order to simplify a bit this expression we need an easy (though famous) result.
Lemma. If G is the centroid of the triangle ABC then for any point X
XA + XB + XC = 3XG.
Proof. Let M be the midpoint of BC. Then from 4XBC we get XB + XC =
XA + XB + XC = 3(XM + M G) = 3XG.
Note that for X = G it yields GA + GB + GC = 0. The lemma is proved.

w, w0 have the same length and the same direction, thus w = w0 = u v, implying
u + v + w = 0.
While so simple, the theorem is quite useful. Part a) gets an angle relationship
provided a length relationship, and part b) gives a length relationship (derived
from similarity) provided an angle relationship (from parallelism). The result is a
straightforward consequence of the basic triangle similarity properties, however it is
more valuable than that. The usefulness of this theorem stems from its statement
in vector language, and thus is more general in its application, because the fact that
three vectors form a triangle does not imply that their corresponding segments do.
Here is an illustration:
Problem 3. Let ABC be an equilateral triangle. The points A1 , A2 , B1 , B2 , C1
and C2 are chosen on the sides BC, BC, CA, CA, AB, AB respectively such that
they form a convex hexagon with all of its sides equal. Prove that A1 B2 , B1 C2 , and
C1 A2 concur.

Solution. We cannot see any triangle similarity here (it is hidden beneath a construction that we do not see). However, its consequence may be applied. The
vectors A1 A2 , B1 B2 , C1 C2 are equal in length and parallel to the sides of triangle
ABC (which are also equal in length), so by the converse of the theorem we deduce
that their sum is zero. Clearly, A1 A2 + A2 B1 + B1 B2 + B2 C1 + C1 C2 + C2 A1 = 0,
hence A2 B1 + B2 C1 + C2 A1 = 0.
But these vectors have the same length! Thus we apply the theorem again to see
that they form an equilateral triangle, so they are rotations of each other (by 120
and 240 ), as we know A1 A2 , B1 B2 , C1 C2 are. Hence triangles A1 A2 B1 , B1 B2 C1 ,
C1 C2 A1 are also rotations of each other so they are congruent. Thus A1 B1 = B1 C1 =
C1 A1 and so A1 B1 C1 is equilateral. As C1 B2 = B2 B1 , we deduce that A1 , B2 lie on
the perpendicular bisector of B1 C1 , so A1 B2 is the perpendicular bisector of B1 C1 .
Analogously, B1 C2 and C1 B2 are also perpendicular bisectors in triangle A1 B1 C1 ,
so the three lines concur.
A well-known concept about vectors is their scalar product. It is widely used in
geometry. Here we will present another product, less known but still useful.
The vectorial product of two vectors u, v (which we will denote here by u v)
is the product of their lengths and the sine of the clockwise angle between them
(thus the angle between u and v and the angle between v and u are not equal, they
actually sum up to 360 ). Clearly, u v is twice the area of the triangle formed
by the vectors u and v, possibly with a minus sign if one needs and angle greater
than to rotate u clockwise until it becomes parallel to v. In analytic geometry, if
u = (x, y) and v = (x1 , y1 ), then u v = xy1 yx1 .
The vectorial product is, like the scalar product, distributive with respect to
addition. However, it is not commutative: in fact a b + b a = 0. Is is clear that
two vectors u and v are parallel (or opposite) if and only if u v = 0, in particular
u u = 0. Next we show a simple application of this concept.
Problem 4. Let ABCDE be a pentagon. Suppose that four of its sides are parallel
to the diagonals opposite to them. Prove that the fifth side is also parallel to the
diagonal opposite to it.
Solution. Assume that AB||CE, BC||DA, CD||EB, and DE||AC. We must prove
e, OF = f . Then OM = a+b

The condition on the areas of ACE and BDF is easy to formulate: it rewrites
as (a e) (c e) = (b f ) (d f ) and after opening the brackets we write it
as a c + c e + e a = b d + d f + f b.

x + y + z = 0 and we have equality in (1) and in all of its analogous relations. In
particular, we obtained that the opposite sides of the given hexagon are parallel.

Finally, we are ready for another tough nut recently proposed for a Team
Selection Test in Vietnam.
Problem 8. Let ABCDEF be a convex hexagon with perimeter P , and let the
midpoints of its sides form the hexagon A1 B1 C1 D1 E1 F1 with perimeter P 0 . If
A1 B1 C1 D1 E1 F1 has all angles equal, then prove that P 0 23 P .

Solution. We can assume that A1 is the midpoint of AB, B1 is the midpoint of
BDF . Set OO0 = x. We have AB = AO+ OO0 + O0 B = u+x, where u = AO+ O0 B.
Analogously, CD = v + x, EF = w + x, where v = CO + O0 D, w = EO + O0 F .
It is clear that CO, O0 D are rotations of AO, O0 B by 120 , so v is rotation of
u by 120 . The same thing is true for w. Now we prove that |u + x| + |v +
x| + |w + x| |u| + |v| + |w|. Indeed, if we construct points XY Z such that
