We used many props within our opening sequence, as we
didnt have a central character, which we have identified.
We chose to do this as an effect as in the thriller genre you are required to build an initial enigma. The first prop we used was a stanley knife as it is a work tool but is also dangerous as it can harm a human. Black leather gloves were also used throughout the entire opening as this adds an element of mystery as it doesnt reveal anything about the antagonists identity. They are also paired with a womans black coat as this keeps the characters identity hidden whilst connoting to the audience that they are a female. This conflicts the typical male dominance over a storyline, as suggested by John Bergers ideology that men act and women appear as the woman appears to be more active in these scenes. Another prop we used was a pot of pills as this connotes mental illness which allows the audience to develop an opinion of the character which is that they are unstable and taking medication to treat an illness. We also used a gun as this connotes danger and death and this is relevant to our storyline as it is about the murders of teenagers. We also gathered old newspaper cuttings which were relevant to a murder or crime of some sort so the audience could connote that it was a well planned murder or that the murders this figure is carrying out is in the public eye and is obviously very skilled at keeping themselves hidden and without getting caught. We also filmed a real heart being cut up as it denotes violence and precision as the character is using a scalpel which is a scientific piece of equipment. It connotes the true gruesome thoughts that the character has to carry out for what would be for most people, such a horrible task to carry out. We also used other tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, duck tape and cable ties to create the atmosphere that something bad was about to happen to leave the audience with the initial enigma. We took shots in a photography dark room with pictures developing of other characters within the storyline so that the audience connote that the antagonist is also stalking their victims which links back to mental illness as it is not a normal activity to conduct.
