Objective(s) of Subject:
Use of algebra to solve linear systems.
Description of how vectors can be applied.
Description of how determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors can be computed.
Introduction to linear transformations and orthogonal projections.

11.

Learning Outcomes:
After completing this unit, students will be able to:
1. solve problems related to structures of vector spaces using linear techniques;
2. use vector techniques to prove results in plane Euclidean geometry;
3. compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix;
4. solve problems related to the linear transformations;
5. determine the subspaces of a given vector space;
6. solve least squares problem.

12.

Subject Synopsis:
This subject serves as an introduction to the most basic concepts in linear algebra.
The vector spaces within which the general ideas are developed are all real vector
spaces, Rn . Formal proofs will be presented if they are necessary for a proper
understanding of the fundamental concepts and techniques. The course will develop
basic skills in computing with vectors and matrices. The topics to be discussed in this
unit are vectors, matrices, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, vector
spaces, linear transformations and orthogonality.
