Fall 2015
Lab Manual
Lab#7: Using Project Editor of Riverbed Modeler to build and analyze 10BaseT
Ethernet LAN with a Hub
Learning Objectives:

To setup a 10BaseT Ethernet configuration with a data rate of 10 Mbps

using a 16 port Hub
The Simulations in this lab will demonstrate the Performance capabilities
of a 10BASET Ethernet LAN

Step 1: Select Project and enter Names for the Project and the Scenario as shown
below in Figure 1.1 and Click OK.

Step 2: In the Initial topology box select the Create Empty Scenario option and Click
Next as shown in Figure 1.2.

Step 3: Choose Office from the Network Scale list and Click Next as shown in Figure
1.3.

Step 4: Next, assign 200 meters and 100 meters to X and Y span respectively and Click
Next as shown in Figure 1.4.

Step 5: In the select technologies, select the Ethernet technology as shown in Figure
1.5 and Click Next. Next, review your selections and Click Finish as shown in Figure
1.6. Close the Object Palette Dialog Box.

Note: Save the Project
2. Network Creation
Step 1: Select Rapid Configuration under the Topology menu and select Star and
Click OK as shown in Figure 2.1.

Step 2: In the configuration box, set the values as shown in Figure 2.2 and Click OK. In
the box, you are selecting the Center node model, type of DTE, Type of Link Model, and
number of DTEs.

Step 3: Next, we need to set the parameters of the Hub. Right click on the Hub and
select Edit attributes from the menu as shown in Figure 2.3. Set the name of the Hub as
shown in the Figure 2.4.

Note: Save the Project. Network creation is now completed and should be as shown
below:

3. Configuring Network Nodes

Step 1: Right click on any of one of the node and select similar nodes. This should
select all the nodes. Right click again on any one of the node and select Edit Attributes.
Next, check the Apply Changes to Selected Objects check box as shown in Figure 3.1.
This is has to be done to apply any changes to all nodes. Set the four parameters
shown in Figure 3.1. The parameters control the type of traffic and amount of traffic to
be generated by each node.

Note: Save the project. Nodes are set to generate required traffic.
4. Configuring Required Statistics Collection
Step 1: Select the Choose Individual Statistics option under the Discrete Event
Simulation (DES) menu. Expand the statistics hierarchy as shown in Figure 4.1. Select
the parameters shown and Click OK.

5. Configuration the Simulation

Step 1: Click on the Configuration/Run Simulation button
and assign 2 minutes
to the Duration box as shown in Figure 5.1. Note that the Number of runs is set to 1.

Step 2: Now you are ready to run the simulation. Click on the Run button in Figure
5.1. You should see a simulation window showing the progress of the simulation. Click
on the Close button to next view the results.

6. Viewing the Results

Step 1: Select View Results under the DES/Results menu. This should bring up the
Results Browser window. Click on Global Statistics and select the Delay statistics
under Ethernet menu.
Step 2: Change the drop down menu on the lower-right part of the Results Browser
dialog box from As ls to time_average. The resulting graph should be as shown below:

Step 3: Next select the Traffic Sent under the Traffic Source menu and make sure the
drop down menu selected at the lower right side is time_average. The resulting graph
should be as shown below:

Step 4: Next select the Traffic Received under the Traffic Sink menu and make sure
the drop down menu selected at the lower right side is time_average. The resulting
graph should be as shown below:

Step 5: Under the Object Statistics select Hub and select the Collision Count
statistics. Make sure the drop down menu on the lower right side is set to time_average.
The graph should resemble as shown below:

Step 6: Under the Object Statistics select Hub and select the Utilization statistics.
Make sure the drop down menu on the lower right side is set to time_average. The
graph should resemble as shown below:
