WerecognizeandareinspiredbytheleadershipofOxyUnitedforBlackLiberationandtheircall
forwidespreadinstitutionalchangeinthecultureoftheCollege.WeaffirmthatBlacklivesmatter
andalsoaffirmthebroaderidealsofsocialjusticetowhichtheircallspeaks.Werecognizethatthe
structuralracismandotherformsofoppressionoftheCollegeviolateourcommitmenttoensuring
equityandexcellenceinoureducationalprogramsforallofourstudents.Wealsoacknowledge
thatourcollectiveinactionasafacultybodymakesuscomplicitinthefailuresoftheCollegeto
makeourMissionalivedreality.Forthis,weapologizeforfailingyou,ourstudents.

Wetakeresponsibilityforaddressingthosestudentdemandsthataretheproperpurviewofthe
faculty.

1. Atthefacultymeetingscheduledfor12/01/15,thefacultywillvoteonaresolution
concerningPresidentVeitchsleadershipattheCollege.

2. Weamplifythecallforameaningful,fullyfunded,andstaffedBlackStudiesdepartment
withanacademicmajor.Webelievetheexecutiveadministrativeleadershipisresponsible
forsecuringresourcesnecessaryforthistobeachieved.Asfaculty,wewillstewardthe
developmentofthismajorresultinginaformalproposaltotheAcademicPlanning
Committee(APC).

3. Toincreasetheproportionoffacultyofcolor,withaprimaryfocusonscholarsfrom
historicallyunderrepresentedcommunities,attheCollege,wewillcreatepositionsandjob
descriptionsalignedwithCollegesmissionchangethewaysweadvertise,recruit,select,
ofsearches.

FacultyCouncil(FC)willgenerateatimelinetominimallymeetthe
studentsdemandfor100%increaseinfacultyofcolor,withaprimaryfocus

approvalbythefullfacultyattheregularlyscheduledfacultymeetingon
February23,2016.

WewillrequiretheDeanoftheCollegetoissueannualreportsonthe
progresstowardsthesetargets,andempowertheChiefDiversityOfficer
(CDO),inconjunctionwiththeDean,toholdusaccountabletomeeting
them.
iii.
InSpring2016,theAffirmativeActionCommitteewillworkwiththenewly
hiredCDOandtheDeantoidentifybestpracticesforbothregularfaculty
searchesandTargetofOpportunity(TOP)hiring.
1. Recognizingthedisincentivesthatcurrentlyexistinourprocesses,
wewillworkwiththeDeanandCDOtoearmarkresourcesand
createnewprogramsthatincentivizedepartmentstonotonlyhire,
butalsomentorandpromote,facultyofcolor,withaprimaryfocus
onscholarsfromhistoricallyunderrepresentedcommunities.

andhiringdiscussionswithineachdepartmentandacrosstheCollege.

4. CommittoimplementingandmandatingdiversitytrainingforallfacultystartingJanuary
2016.Inadditiontofacultywidetraining,specifictrainingwillberequiredforAdvisory
Council,AffirmativeActionCommittee,DepartmentChairs,SearchCommittees,Faculty
Council,ReviewCommitteeChairs,andAcademicPlanningCommittee.Thistrainingwill
beongoingandwillincludemandatoryallytraining.
a. InSpring2016,theCenterforTeachingExcellencewillworkwiththenewlyhired
CDOandtheDeantoidentifyanappropriatetrainingprogram.
b. WeempowertheDeanoftheCollegetoensurecompliance.

5. Thefacultyagreesthatweneedtoprioritizeandstrengthenthecentralacademicfocuson
cultureandidentityinthefirstyearexperience.Toaddressthis:
a. WechargetheCoreDirector,inconsultationwithAPCandFC,tospearhead
identificationofthemoststrategicandexpedientwaytorealizethisgoalduring
Spring2016,whichcouldinclude:
i.
AreviewofthespecificcoursecontentthatmeetstheUSDiversity
requirementandtodraftaplantoacademicallyorientstudentstoissuesof
culture,identity,andequitywithinthefirstyear(e.g.,requiretheUS
Diversityrequirementbemetwithinthefirstyear)
ii.
ThestructureofCSPiscurrentlyunderreviewbyAPCthiswillinclude
reviewofCSPcoursecontentandpedagogy.

b. InSpring2016,theStudentAffairsFacultyWorkingGroup,incollaborationwith
theCDO,willassesstheFYREprogramalongwiththefirstyearorientation
program.

Weacknowledgethatmeetingstudentdemandsisnecessarybutnotsufficientformakinglasting
culturalandstructuralchangesattheCollege.Followingthestudentscallthatallcampus
constituenciesidentifyhowtheycaneffectthesechanges,wehaveidentifiedthefollowinginitial
waysinwhichfacultycanfurthercommittotakingsubstantiveratherthansymbolicaction:

1. Inrecognitionofthepowerimbalancebetweenfacultyandstudents,wewillworkin
consultationwithstudentsandtheCDOtodevelopaneffectivemechanismforstudentsto
addressandreportmicroaggressionsorotherconflictsbetweenstudentsandfaculty,to
beginstartingFall2016.FacultyCouncilwillputaninterimpolicyinplacebythestartof
theSpring2016semester.
2. GoingbeyondareviewoftheCSPprogram,USDiversityrequirements,andthe
developmentofaBlackStudiesdepartmentandmajor,alldepartmentsmustincorporate
issuesofculturalandracialidentityanddiversityintheircurricula.PartoftheChairs
report,startingwiththe20152016academicyear,mustincludeevidence,discussion,and
evaluationofthis.Futureassessmentandexternalreviewswillincludethisasacriterion.
3. Recruitment,mentoring,andawardingofhighimpactpractices(includingsummer
research,fellowshipsandawards,studyabroad,internships,etc.)mustmoreclosely
reflectracial,ethnic,andsocioeconomicdemographicsofthestudentbody.Faculty
committeesonAffirmativeAction,UndergraduateResearch,InternationalPrograms,and
NationalFellowshipsandAwardswillprioritizeareviewofcurrentpracticesand
recommendationsformovingforwardintheirSpring2016work.TheseCommitteeswill
followthroughwiththeDean,CDO,andrelatedcampusofficestosecuretheresources
andstructuresnecessarytoimplementandsustainthesecommitments.
4. Departmentchairs,theDeanoftheCollege,andACwilltakeresponsibilityforensuring
thatfacultyreviewsaddressFacultyHandbookcriteriafortenureandpromotionwith
respecttopromotingsuccessofadiversegroupofstudents,andinparticular,historically
underrepresentedstudentsofcolor.TheDeansOfficewillprovidedatatofacilitatethese
reviews.
5. Externalreviewsofacademicdepartmentsandprogramswillprioritizethemannerand
extenttowhichdepartmentspromotethesuccessofadiversegroupofstudentsandin
particular,historicallyunderrepresentedstudentsofcolor.

Departmentchairsmustwork
withtheDeanandtheDirectorofAssessmenttoensurethatcompositionofexternal
reviewteamsreflectsdiversityandexpertiseneededtoassesstheextenttowhich
departmentsmeetthesepriorities.
6. TheapplicationprocessforRemsenBirdFundsfordepartmentsponsoredcampus
speakersandprogrammingshouldberevisedtoincentivizeandaddressissuesof
diversity,andbringmorespeakersfromhistoricallyunderrepresentedgroupsatthe
College.TheDeanwillworkwithDepartmentChairsinSpring2016torevisetheCollege
allocationprocessforRemsenBirdfunds,forFall2016launch.

7. Wechargetheadministrationtohireanombudspersontoprovideaplaceandaprocess
forstudents,faculty,andstafftohaveanindependentandconfidentialresource.Faculty
Councilwillreportontheprogressandtimingtohireanombudspersonattheregularly
scheduledfacultymeetingonMarch24,2016.
8. RecognizingthecentralimportanceoftheCDOtoensuringthesuccessofour
commitmentsaswellasthoseofothersaroundcampus,wewillworkwiththeCDOto
determineneedsandtodemandadequatepermanentresourcesandstaffingfortheoffice
tosuccessfullyworkinalloftheseareas.
9. DuringtheSpring2016semestertheCenterforTeachingExcellencewillconvenea
FacultyLearningCommunitythatwillfocusonteachingin,through,andwithsocial
movements.Theintentionwillbetoharnessandinstitutionalizethecurriculumshapedby
theAGCparticipants:onethatcenter[s]issuesofsocialjusticeandidentityinour
academics.
10. FacultyCouncilwillestablishastandingfacultycommitteechargedwithmonitoringand
assessingtheprogressmadetowardtheprogramsandresourcesnecessaryto
accomplishtheculturalandstructuralshifts,andtopartnerwithandsupporttheofficeof
theCDO.RepresentativesfromthiscommitteewillparticipateintheCOMMITTEE
proposedbyPresidentVeitchon11/19email.
