Unit 49
Profession
To practice this profession, the professional needs to have a university diploma and be trained
before being able to provide care. In urban areas, this professional has a certain type of clients. In
rural zones, the tasks of this professional usually change. Although its the same profession, they
specialize in taking care of different types of clients. There are also professionals who tend to
specialize in another area of knowledge such as exotic clients. They can even develop their career
doing research in laboratories.
Their main task is to diagnose health problems and to medicate sick clients, treat and dress
wounds, and perform surgeries.
This professional also gives advice about feeding, breeding, behaviors, and how the owner of their
clients can treat for fleas and ticks.
The professionals in this field are usually amiable and patient, and, above all, love the animals they
treat.
Unit 50
Landmark
This landmark was built on the border of the country and its empire in order to protect it from
invaders, nomads, forces, and warriors. It was a series of several fortifications that started to be
built in the 7th century BC. They were then joined and changed into a bigger, stronger and unified
wall. Most of the wall was rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty. Its the largest structure humans have
ever built. During that time, the wall had another purpose, which consisted of controlling the
border, and supervising the taxes on goods transported through the Silk Road. Later on, the
fortifications were enhanced by watch towers.
As nowadays little of this wall remains, the landmark has been rebuilt often, in order to keep it
maintained as a touristic attraction. Several tour companies in China offer a tour to this place
every day. On public holidays in the country, it becomes crowded and sometimes you have just a
little room to climb up or get down from it. At some points there are cable cars that you can take
up to the top if you are not very keen on walking. The sight is considered one of the most beautiful
and impressive in China.

Leisure
Leisure is one of those things people value the most in their lives. Having free time seems to be so
welcome in a society where most of the time is spent on business, working, studying or doing
domestic chores. There are endless things to do for leisure, such as playing an instrument,
dancing, listening to music, watching a movie, practicing a sport, gardening, among others. Some
of them require no money in order to be fun. Others can be quite expensive, though. In one
specific case, one can choose to do it using little money while others spend a lot of money on it.
Some plan far in advance while others decide at the last minute. Some trace a map and make
routes of where they want to go when they get there, while others just go and see whatever is
possible. People, when they are visiting these new places, usually take thousands of pictures and
make lots of friends, try new types of food, and many times experience differences in weather
while far from home or even differences in the time zone. Some enjoy their stay at luxury hotels
while others spend all day long walking around and spend the night in cheap accommodations. But
one thing is the same no matter what choice has been made: everyone comes back with a feeling
of renewal and making plans for the next one.
Unit 52
Food
Good food is appreciated by many people all over the world. Different cultures, regions and
communities tend to have one or some dishes that say a lot about their tastes and are very
particular. In some religions, for example, eating meat at all or some types of meat is considered
sinful. In some cultures, though, a barbecue is almost a registered trademark of their habits. There
is one specific kind of food that is eaten in many cultures and in many different ways, though. This
type of food is known for having a high quantity of carbohydrates. It can be considered a good
source of energy, but it is recommended to be eaten with another source of food such as meat as
a protein provider or with some vegetables or salad, to retard the distribution of carbohydrates in

the body and, as a result, not giving you the feeling of still being hungry. This type of dish is very
common in Asian countries. There is a specific type of this dish sold in supermarkets that is famous
for cooking almost instantly. It usually requires only two to three minutes of boiling. They usually
come with an envelope with seasoning inside that you add to the dish and then it is ready to eat.
People usually eat this when they have no time to cook.

Drink
There are many types of beverages prepared for human consumption. Some can be made from
pure fruit juice. Natural fruit juice is very healthy and can provide hydration, minerals and vitamins
to the body. Sugar is not really necessary since fruits are naturally sweet. Another option is

industrialized juice, which comes in boxes and is very tasty as well but usually contains
preservatives, artificial aromas, and added sugar.
Soft drinks are also a well-known fizzy beverage. There are plenty of different flavors, such as
artificial flavors of orange, grape, ginger, peach, kola nuts, among others. They are served cold.
There are also many different kinds of alcoholic drinks. Some of them consist of the addition of
fruit or creams and sweet ingredients or a soft drink to the alcoholic beverage, served with ice.
There is also a large list of hot beverages, such as the ancient and welcoming tea, with different
types of flavors based on plants and fruit, the worldwide known black coffee and the coffee-based
drinks such as the caf au lait, cappuccino, latte, mocha, etc.
But there is one specific type of drink that is the base for all of them. None of them can be made
without it. This plain drink is the main provider of life.
Unit 54
Internet
Internet has transformed contemporary society. Decades ago the use of computers was restricted
to a few companies. They used to be huge in size and were quite complicated to operate. After
some time, the first personal computer was developed. After that, Internet was created to be able
to connect one computer to another and, from then on, information started to spread all over the
World Wide Web. Nowadays, one can find just about any type of information on the Internet,
from trustworthy sources to those that are not very reliable. It has brought people together and
brought speed to communication in such an easy way that, now, having to use the telephone or
take your car to go somewhere is simply unnecessary. Social networks are used by individuals to
stay in touch with people and keep up with the news. They are also useful for companies to
display their products and keep in touch with their clients and with tendencies. Instant
messengers connected to smartphones makes quick communication even easier. Another
important tool has substituted the old-fashioned writing and posting of letters and is still very
useful for staying in touch with people and attaching documents.

shape and size and have an impressive display. Most of the species are native to Asia. They are
known as ornamental plants outdoors or indoors. In the latter case, they are a popular crop for
commercial purposes. When they are grown to be cut, they are usually cut in the budding stage
and kept refrigerated until they are ready to be sold.
They are grown for their beauty since they are very showy. They grow in erect shrubs and have
stems with prickles, called thorns. Their leaves grow alternately on the stem. Their colors range
from white to yellows, pinkish and reds. They can vary from four to five petals to having a lot of
them. This plant represents passion, feelings and emotions. When somebody gives another person

Transportation
Means of transportation have been an important and essential need of facilitating locomotion
from ancient times up to today. Important improvements have been made since the first animal
and human-powered transport were invented. One of the greatest achievements of the Industrial
Revolution was the steam locomotive and now today, the modern and fast bullet trains.
Its important to mention that means of transportation have to be provided in sufficient quantity
as well as quality. Besides, they have to be well planned in order to make transportation applicable
and viable.

The main modes of transport nowadays are subways, trains, buses, ferries, and airplanes. Special
attention should be paid to one kind of vehicle, which is also used as a popular form of recreation.
Using this two-wheeled vehicle is considered healthy, doesnt pollute the environment, can be
parked easily and moves along traffic with ease as it doesnt occupy the space of a car. But it can
be dangerous, though, to ride it in places where there are no specific lanes for these narrow, light
vehicles. But it could be considered an important mode of transport if governments paid it its due
attention.

because its variations can be quite flashy and showy. In ancient times this color wasnt used to dye
fabric. The preferences were for reddish colors. The modern use of this color started in England in
the 17th century, after the Great Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of London in 1666. Charles
James Fox, a British politician, wore a coat of this color and mens suits from then on followed his
tendency, including the uniforms of the military and the cavalry.
In the twentieth century, many artists recognized the emotional strength of this color that
represents depth and stability. Its a primary color and symbolizes, trust, confidence, intelligence,

City
A trip to this touristic city can be compared to a big adventure. If one gets lost among the endless
streets and bridges of the suburbs, one would have no other choice but to keep on walking. This is
actually a pretty nice thing to do in this city. A walk tour allows tourists to see its unique
architecture and works of art. Foot bridges and boat canals connect the city making locomotion
accessible to locals and tourists. Another way of moving from one place to the next is to use the
gondolas. These symbolic, traditional boats transport people around the narrow flooded streets.
This has been a mode of transport for more than ten centuries. They are designed to be operated
by qualified professionals alone. This professional needs to have a license. There are around four
hundred gondoliers working currently in the city, and only three to four licenses are issued each
year. The city is listed as a World Heritage Site. Its located in Italy and is geographically unique.

Season of the year
The seasons of the year are calculated by an astronomical perspective and are divided into four
different and exact periods in the span of 12 months: each season being three months long. The
only difference in this definition is that one season in the northern hemisphere is the exact
opposite of the one that happens at the same time in the southern hemisphere. For example: If
its summer in the North, its winter in the South. Some regions have four strongly defined seasons
during the year. For example: winter is cold and snowy, with temperatures below zero. Spring is
slightly cold and blossomy. Summer is hot and with very high temperatures, and fall is
characterized by the waning heat and the beginning of cold weather again, with leafless trees
everywhere and dry leaves all over the ground. Other regions dont have such a defined
difference, with usually just two main predominant seasonal characteristics. For example: even
though it may be wintertime, temperatures can rise quite a bit and cold isnt very often
experienced, while summer can be quite moderate compared to some other areas where summer
is dominant. One interesting thing about a specific season is that its an intermediate seasonal
phase in between extreme heat and extreme cold. It signifies the emergence of new life. It brings
growth and rejuvenation. It enhances natures beauty as it seems to unleash it at full strength.

Room of the house
This room is usually one of the most comfortable rooms in a house. Special attention is paid to it
since its a room where people go when they want to feel comfortable and rest. For the minimum
of comfort required, its necessary for this room to have enough light, but, on the other hand, its
necessary to be dark enough to promote the sensation of tranquility and calmness when needed.
Its well known for being a private room. Standard furnishings in this room include a closet, a

nightstand, a desk, and a dresser. More sophisticated rooms might have carpet, wooden flooring,
a TV set and fancy curtains. But the most important item in this room is a bed, a pillow and bed
linen. In some houses there is a private bathroom attached directly to this room. This cant be the
only type of room in a house, though. Houses that have this type of room usually have the main
room and others for their children, for example. Some families keep these rooms empty for people
who come to visit them; others rent theirs out. In the latter case, this can be a vital source of
income for these families.

Sculpture

Auguste Rodin was a sculptor of French nationality. He had an incredible ability to work with clay.
During his lifetime he had his work severely criticized. The sculptures of his age tended to have
decorative purposes, while Rodins works were about mythology and allegory. He modeled the
human body with realism and preserved individual, physical characteristics. He was very sensitive
to the criticism he received, but never changed his style. By 1900 he had become a worldrenowned artist. He was sought by wealthy clients after an exhibition where he had his work
displayed. After his death, in 1917, his sculptures suffered a decline in popularity, but within a few
decades his work was recognized. One, among many famous works, consists of a bronze sculpture
on a marble pedestal, depicting the image of a nude man sitting and meditating while resting his
head in one of his hands and the other on one of his knees. Its used to frequently represent
philosophy. Originally, the sculpture was intended to represent the figure of the Italian poet Dante
Alighieri pondering his work The Divine Comedy. Rodins intention with this sculpture was to
represent intellect as well as poetry. The sculpture is in the Muse Rodin in Paris. Its original name
in French is Le Penseur.

Invention
This well-known scientist was born in 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He moved to Canada, and then
to the United States, settling in the city of Boston, before beginning his career as an inventor. He
had been interested in the education of deaf people. The fact that his mother and wife were deaf
may have influenced him and his interest in this field. This interest lead him to invent the
microphone and, in 1876, his "electrical speech machine," which is considered an indispensable
object nowadays. News of his invention spread throughout the United States and Europe. By the
1870s he had set up the first connection exchange in New Haven, Connecticut. From then on,
distance connections were made between Massachusetts and New York.
This scientist imagined great uses for this tool, but he would never have imagined it being used to
transmit video images. Since his death in 1922, the telecommunication industry has undergone an
incredible revolution. Nowadays, deaf people are able to use special display telephones to
communicate. His "electrical speech machine" was a very important step to modernity.

Planet
This planet has two and a half times the mass of the other planets that compose the Solar System
combined. It is classified as a gas giant along with other planets in the Solar System. This planet is
associated with mythology and religious beliefs from different cultures. It is composed mainly of
hydrogen, helium, and liquid matter. Surrounding this planet is a faint planetary ring system and a
powerful magnetosphere. It has 67 moons, including the four larger moons that were discovered
by the astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1610. The largest moon has a diameter greater than that of
the planet Mercury. The outer atmosphere of this planet is visibly separated into different bands
at different latitudes, culminating in storms and turbulences along their boundaries. The result is
the Great Red Spot, a huge storm which has occurred since at least the 17th century when it was
first seen by telescope. This planet is the largest in the Solar System and the fifth planet from the
Sun.
