Teachers Notes on Project Essays

cience teachers and their kids always seem to

have all of the fun and glory. Those poster
boards jammed with all of their carefully craed
experiments for the annual science fair are always so
proudly displayed for all to see.
Isnt it about me for the language arts department
to get in on the fun and show o a li!le as well?
Enter Project Essays!

Project Essays
As you can see from the scaled mock-up of a
standard 22x28 poster board shown here, the cut
out manipulaves that comes with each essay in this
collecon t nicely with room to spare.
The one shown here has the rst dra manipulaves,
the nal dra, and photos that illustrate the topic.
Megans display is in landscape orientaon, but
portrait orientaon works just as well.
In the event that you dont want to deal with scissor
and glue-wielding kids, the manipulaves sll serve
their purposege/ng kids to organize and structure
their wring regardless of purpose.

the storys structure itselfthats where the teacher

comes in.

Project Persuasion
The consensus on this type of wring is that opposing
views have to be acknowledged and, in some way,
rebu!ed. This explains the presence of the Project
Persuasion: Prewring, Page 2 of 6 organizer.

What follows on this page are brief notes concerning

two of the wring projects and a few closing remarks.

There is no specic space in this project for the

inclusion of opposing views and rebu!als simply
because it is impossible to predict where the writer
(or teacher) feels they are best suited.

Project Ficon: Morgan

Closing Remarks

Obviously, the target audience of kids for this project

is the beginning writer of con. As you know, there
are tons of ways to structure a short story.

With the sequenal sets of organizers along with

their tagged informaon, this collecon may very
well be one of a kind. Whether or not this is true
makes no dierence to me.

With its suspenseful episode as the hook, and

encouragement to build rising acon, this organizer
should put young writers well on their way to
building their rst short story.
What is not addressed here is how to handle
dialogue, me transions, and anything outside of

What DOES make a dierence is what you, the

teacher, has to say. How can these be improved?
What else do you need? How can I more adequately
serve the needs of your kids?
Please take a moment to let me know.
