This weeks game, set for a 10:30 a.m. kickoff at

ith the Holiday Parade this

weekend as the last major
event of the year, Main Street
Vineland is already planning
for next year. We have begun putting the
events and projects of our groups on a calendar that will be part of the citys calendar of
events. It will provide an opportunity for
individuals and groups to see what were
doing and join us in our work.
For the Organization Team, it means a
renewal of fundraising and membership
recruitment efforts. We raise funds to make
sure that each event and project we do is covered financially, to build important bridges
and partnerships with other organizations
and businesses in the community, and to
make sure that Main Street Vineland can be a
strong, viable organization in the years to
come. For each of our events and projects, we

need volunteers to turn them from words on

paper to a reality. It means plugging in the
volunteers we have and those who have
expressed interest, into the project that
works best for them and for us.
For the Design Team, it means continuing
to work on issues covering beautification,
clean-up, code enforcement, and more. We are
seeking volunteers and organizations to help
us with our Adopt-a-Block project. We do it
the third Saturday of each month and, for a
group, it can mean just a three-hour commitment on one of those Saturdays. The more
groups we have to plug in during the year, the
more we can get done to keep up with cleaning and maintaining what has been done. The
Design Team is also working on other projects, which you will read about soon.
The Promotions Team is mapping out
events for next year. Many are familiar with

the big events that have been part of our

downtown for years, but we want also to focus
more on what we call micro-eventssmaller
events, some business-related, that dont necessarily mean closing the street. Wedding
Weekend is an example of this concept. It can
also be a health fair, a car-care event, or any
event that takes advantage of businesses we
have downtown. Were also talking about a
monthly Friday night devoted to events.
The Economic Restructuring Team deals
with business recruitment, retention and
marketing. That team is hard at work on a
branding initiative that will look ahead to
what we want our downtown to bea destination that will attract millennials and Gen X
and Y people along with babyboomers and
other generations.
Our newest group, our Millennial
Advisory Board, is now organized with elected officers, and we will be looking for their
input as well as plugging them into the four
teams already mentioned.
I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving
and also remind you of the Main Street
Vineland Holiday Parade, sponsored by
BB&T, this coming Saturday, November 28
(following day is the rain date), starting at 5
p.m., on Landis Avenue. Come out and enjoy
the festivities. I

Foundation has been honored by independent, nonprofit research and planning
think tank PlanSmart New
Jersey for the Foundations
commitment to invest $50
million in Cumberland,
Salem, Gloucester, and
Western Atlantic Counties
by 2023. PlanSmart congratulated the Foundation
for their efforts to support
regional equity and invigorate Southern New Jerseys economy.
In presenting its 2015 Regional Equity Award to Pascale Sykes, PlanSmart cited
the Foundations collaborative work ethic and support for South Jerseys communities provides a real opportunity for long-term development and equity across the
state. Located in Vineland, the Foundation has been active in the four counties
since 2010 and has already invested more than $17 million in its work in South

Initiative.
The Foundations promotional effort, a destination marketing program, has been
unveiled under the banner of New Jerseys Heartland. Explaining the Foundations

hen Vinelanders Gustav

and Geoffrey Scheer
entered the New Jersey
38th Voluntary Regiment in
September 1864, their enlistment followed
the towns buy-out of draft notices earlier
in the year. The Civil War was waning and
the Scheers would be involved in fighting
for only nine months, but Gustavs participation would later allow him to spend a
portion of his final years as the oldest surviving Civil War veteran in Vineland.
In 1917, Gustav told the Vineland
Historical Magazine, The regiment was
divided into three sections. My section was
employed policing the telegraph service at
Fort Pocahontas. According to Edmund
Scheers booklet about his familys legacy
contained in the archives of the Vineland
Historical and Antiquarian Society
(VHAS), the Scheers patrolled 40 miles of
telegraph lines. It was while performing his
duties that Gustav was injured. Here my
leg was broken, he told the Historical
Magazine. Not being properly treated, it
never became sound. It still troubles me.
The fort at which Gustav was stationed
was located near Charles City, Virginia, and
Scheer would have been dispatched there
with his company on September 20, 1864.
The nearby town of City Point is where
General Ulysses S. Grant set up headquarters in the final year of the war, building a
supply depot and field hospital in anticipation of a planned operation that came to be
known as the RichmondPetersburg
Campaign or the Siege of Petersburg, a
town that online sources identify as a major
supply center for the Confederates.
The campaign would last from June 9,
1864 to March 25, 1865 and include General
George Meade, Clara Landis uncle, as part
of the operation. It relied considerably on
the use of an early form of trench warfare,
a method that would be widely employed
in World War I. Raids were conducted regularly and over the course of time, the
Confederate supplies dissipated.
The Union Armys capture of Petersburg
and Confederate General Robert E. Lees
retreat and surrender put an end to the
war. The soldiers of Company C of New
Jersey 38th Voluntary Regiment were mustered out on June 30, 1865. Gustav left the
military with new plans while some say
Geoffrey remained in the army. But

Edmund Scheer,
Gustavs great-great
grandson, recently
shared an 1892 letter
in which Geoffrey
explains that his
service in the U.S.
lasted only 10
months. The letter
also indicates he was
residing in Vineland
at the time. Gustav later spoke of Geoffrey,
who died in 1911, as living alone in the
small house west of mine. He is a bachelor.
Upon his return to Vineland, Gustav
turned his attention to agriculture, acquiring the necessary land, building a series of
structures and providing the right ingredients for a successful venture. As he recalled
in 1917, I was mustered out of the service
and returned to Vineland. I now bought ten
acres of land of Mr. Potter adjoining my
first purchase on the east. I moved the
buildings to this place. I built a substantial
house of good size, put up barns, outhouses
and then began cultivating my farm. I
planted grape vines, berries and fruit trees.
I then bought of Mr. Page ten acres of land
which he had previously bought of Potter.
Mine was the second house built on
Chestnut west of the borough. Wishing a
pair of mules to use about my farm, I visited
the Stockton farm to make the purchase.
It seems Gustav had also decided it was
time to start a family, and during the early
stage of his farming endeavor he encountered someone who would share his dream.
He told the Historical Magazine, While
looking about the farm, I heard a young
woman talking French. I entered into conversation with her and found she had
recently come from Nantes, in France. I
finally told her if she wished to be married
I would not buy the mules, but would take
her home with me. At the end of two days
we were married. Cesarene, pictured, was
the name of Gustavs wife and, over the
years, she and her husband would have 12
children.
Gustav, in 1931 photo above, would
continue to live in Vineland into the 20th
century, his involvement in the Civil War a
source of anecdotes to entertain his fellow
residents over the years. I

The Vineland High School

Academic Team opened its competition season recently, hosting its
Third Annual Invitational Academic
Bowl with Atlantic City High School
in the auditorium of VHS South.
For many years, the Vineland
team, coached by Vicki Yeager, has
participated in a number of "brain
brawls" including a preThanksgiving Day clash with neighboring Millville High School.
Each team consists of four seniors (and a senior alternate) and four juniors (and
a junior alternate). Two seniors and two juniors from Vineland will compete against
two seniors and two juniors from the competing high school during the first 30minute half. Two different seniors and two different juniors from Vineland will compete against two different seniors and two different juniors from another competing
high school during the second 30-minute half.
The team with the highest score at the end of the second half wins the competition. If both teams are tied at the end of the second half, a final, two-minute, written answer, multi-part question will serve as a tie-breaker.
The team with the most correct answers to the tie-breaking question gets five
points. If both teams supply the same number of correct answers the team that
submitted their responses first to the moderator wins the points.
If this process results in a tie, then the match is a tie. No calculators are permitted; teams are allowed pencil and paper only. The questions are selected from both
professional sources and questions submitted by staff members from both schools.
The event will be recorded by VPS TV and aired on Comcast Channel 9 and
Verizon FiOS Channel 41 at various times during the week of Nov. 23

The American flag has been at half-mast

too often in our childrens lifetimes.

he other day I saw a flag flying

at half-mast. It was at a private
residence and I can only assume
that the homeowner was
expressing grief for the victims of the Paris
attacks. President Obama had ordered flags
flown at half-mast through last Thursday.
That image of a lowered flag reminded
me of how often I have seen this same sight
at our local schools during my kids school
years. A couple of times, sadly, the flag had
been lowered to memorialize a classmate.
Other times, it might have been for a
teacher or other staff member. But far too
often, its been for just such national and
world atrocities.
Yes, its a different world our kids are
growing up in and the lowered flag is a
glaring, very visible sign of that. From my
own childhood, I can remember only a
handful of times that the flag was loweredthe assassinations of Robert
Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., the
Munich massacre at the Summer
Olympics. The evening news during my
adolescent years was as grim as today, as I
recall, with body counts from the Vietnam
conflict. The body counts on the newcasts of today are instead the victims of
terrorist attacks, travelers on an airplane
thats been bombed, children in a classroom where a school shooting occurred,
shoppers at the mall, theater-goers.
It begs the question: Is this the new
normal, or was our parents world this
evil? Well, mine lived through The Great
Depression and Pearl Harbor and the War
to End All WarsHitler and the Holocaust.
Still, their reaction to the nightly news

today is one of disgust.

A timely workshop on Wednesday,
December 9, at Cumberland County
College, will explore evils existing in the
world, past and present. The workshop,
entitled A Deal With the Devil? Life In
and Out of the Grey Zone. The exploration of this topic will include the attempt
to negotiate with the Nazis to bring the
Jews out of Germany and into Palestine in
1933 and the Neville Chamberlain-Adolf
Hitler agreement in 1938.
Similar situations in our own time will
be explored, such as the strategic arms limitation talks between the United States and
the Soviet Union, the agreement between
the United States and Iran over limited
atomic bomb development, and whether
one should ever negotiate with ISIS.
In the workshop, interaction with
PowerPoint, film, and readings will foster a
greater understanding of the moral ambiguity in negotiating with perceived evil adversaries, and making life and death choices
within the belly of the beast. Read more
about the free workshop and how to register on page 8.
Its interesting to note how the Paris
attacks have changed the political landscape in this country. I dont see any great
leaders in the bunch of presidential candidates but often, its a matter of someone
rising to the challenges of his or her times.
The response to the Paris attacks from the
candidates will weed out a few of the misfits, we can hope.
Meanwhile, our kids and grandkids are
bombarded every day with grim news. At
the very least, they have grown up more
pessimistic than optimistic. And thats not a
good way to start out in life. I

VINELAND VS

RIVALRY
(Continued from cover)
While each team has been victorious
about 60 times against each other over that
stretchalong with 19 tiesthis season,
Millville is 5-2 playing within their division (5-4 overall, including a 25-21 firstround playoff loss at Cherokee on
November 13) and Vineland is 2-5 (3-6
overall). Millville has also won the last six
consecutive Thanksgiving game matchups.
Since 1893 Vineland is up 63-61-19, but
Millville is closing in on that lead.
That may not be an easy task, however,
as the VHS football team has been
improving over the past couple of years.
In last years pulse-pounding performance on Thanksgiving Day, the teams set a
scoring record with 84 combined points
and more than 1,000 yards of combined
offense as Millville came from behind to
notch a 44-40 victory. I

PHOTOS OF THE 2014 GAME BY BRIAN ANTHONY OF THE VINELAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS TV CREW

The year-by-year results of the high school football rivalry between Millville and Vineland follow. The two
teams face off for the 144th time on Thanksgiving Day. Records from the late 19th Century are difficult to
come by, but we believe the list below is an accurate accounting of the results of the 143 prior meetings.
Decades ago, the teams often played more than once per year, and not necessarily on Thanksgiving Day.

MHS vs. VHS: Did You Know?

There have been 19 ties on the Thanksgiving Day game between Millville
and Vineland, including games where neither team scored a point.
The teams have faced each other when both were powerhouses, when
both were weaklings, and when one was the former and the other the latter.
Millville won by the bizarre score of 5-0 in 1908.
Millville is 22-6-2 in the last 30 years.
In 1955, both teams had no losses for the season and a solid VHS team
rocked MHS 27-6, ending Millvilles state record-tying 31-game winning streak.
