Scope
The scope of this Standard Practice Instruction is to ensure that all
electromagnetic yokes and permanent magnets used by CIT personnel are
calibrated in accordance with the requirements specified by ASME V, Article 7
2.0
Responsibilities
The Technical Manager or his authorized representative shall ensure that this
procedure is followed. Where calibration or recalibration is carried out at a
regional location, it shall only be performed by those personnel authorized in
writing by the Technical Manager.

When in use, all AC and DC electro-magnetic yokes will be verified on a daily basis for magnetic
flux field strength by its lifting power
1.2
If the pole spacing of the electro-magnet is adjustable it shall be set at a distance of between 50 and
200mm apart. (Measured between the internal pole faces)
1.3
When using an AC yoke, place the yoke on 4.5 kilogram steel test plate , see clause 3.0 and switch
On the electric current
1.4
When using a DC Yoke, plate the yoke on 18 kilogram steel test plate and switch on the electric
current.
1.5
Ensure that the pole faces are in full contact with the plates surface
1.6
If the yoke will not lift the plate check the pole contacts for cleanliness
1.7
If the electro magnet still does not lift the plate it shall be withdrawn from use, the supervisor and
the maintenance/calibration department notified
1.8
When in use, all permanent magnets will be checked on a daily basis for magnetic flux field
Strength by measuring their lifting power
2.2
If the poles of the magnet are adjustable they shall be set at a distance of between 50 and 200mm
apart.
2.3
Place the magnets poles on an 18 kilogram steel test plate, see Clause 3.0
2.4
Ensure that the pole faces are in full contact with the plates surface
2.5
If the magnet will not lift the plate check the pole contact for cleanliness.

It is the responsibility of the Branch Managers and / or Branch / Site Supervisors to ensure that
the appropriate checks on the solid content of magnetic inks are carried out and recorded
Personal carrying out checks on the solid content of magnetic inks shall : a) Be approved to a nationally recognized certification scheme level II standard or,
b) Have undergone formal documented training by personnel qualified in accordance a)
2.0
Prior to use the solid content of bulk supply and mixed magnetic inks shall be checked on a
daily basis
Whilst prepared inks in aerosol cans shall be tested at the ratio of 1 can in 20
3.0
Throughly agitate the magnetic ink and pour into a clean Sutherland Flask to the 100 cc line
4.0
Place the Surtherland Flask into its vertical support housing and stand it in a vibration free
area for one hour to allow the particles to settle
5.0
After one hour read the volume of the particles settled at the bottom of the Sutherland Flask
and record the particle concentration in a register. The carrier fluid and solids shall also be
checked for contaminants
6.0
Magnetic ink solid content shall be in compliance with the following, dependent upon the
Inspection Standard being worked to ;
Non-Fluorescent Ink : 1.2% to 2.4% (ASME V)
Fluorescent Ink : 0.1% to 0.5% (ASME V)
7.0
Th ink shall not be used if the solid content of the magnetic ink falls outside the limits stated
in paragraph 6.0
8.0
Where practical the magnetic ink shall be diluted or have concentrate (powder or liquid) added
In order to bring the solid content within the limits specified in 5.0 above. Prior to use the ink
shall be re tested in accordance with sections 2.0 and 6.0 above

When in use, ultra-violet lamp light emissions shall be checked on a daily basis
2.0
The ultra violet lamp shall be switched on and allowed at least 10 minutes to reach its
maximum arc temperature
3.0
The lamp shall be positioned directly above a currently calibrated black light meter and
adjusted until the meter reads 1000 micro watts per square centimeter
4.0
The distance between the black light meter and the ultra violet lamp shall be measured and
recorded
5.0
The recorded distance shall be the maximum working distance between the ultra violet light
and the work piece
6.0
When maximum working distance between the ultra violet light and the work piece becomes
too small to be practical, the ultra violet light bulb shall be replaced
