Programme

ABC-PhD is the multi-disciplinary Doctoral Program of the Department

of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering,
Politecnico di Milano. It has been established in 2012, following the
complete reorganization of the area of Architecture, Built Environment and
Construction Engineering in one only Department and results as merge of
the following four PhD Programs:
Architectural Composition
Building Engineering
Design and Technologies for Cultural Heritage
Technology and Design for Environment and Building
These four programs have been partly joined by a group of researchers
from a fifth one: the PhD Program in Structural Seismic and Geotechnical
Engineering. The merge of these Programs, separately active since the first
institution of Dottorato di Ricerca in Italy (1988), is not only aiming to
reengineer their organization but to start a new, transdisciplinar unit able to
face and solve complex research needs.
Research and training activities of each PhD Candidates will be planned
and developed in one or more of the eight following research field of the
Department (DABC):
1. Advanced Construction Materials and Innovative Building Technologies
2. Energy and Environmental Efficient Buildings (E3B)
3. Risk prevention and emergency management
4. Architectural and Urban Design
5. Complex Buildings
6. Preservation and Enhancement of Built Heritage
7. ICT and Smart Construction
8. Built Environment Economy and Management

Mission
and goals

We want our ABC-PhD Doctors to become self-sufficient, independent

actors, able to gain as scientist and intellectuals, but also as professionals or
entrepreneurs an outstanding position at an international level. The Program is
structured with a strong relationship with the homonym Department and with its
joint foreign institutions, pursuing the following principles (the ten pillars of ABCPhD program:
1. Doctoral candidates are trained through research (by-doing research)
2. PhD Candidates are independend and free but not alone mentored
3. PhD training is tailored on the Candidate and his/her objectives
4. PhD Candidates are reviewed and assessed with the help of external advisors
5. ABC-PhD promote strong relations of the Candidates with other researchers at
an international level
6. The Program has a management system for the quality improvement.
7. The doctoral training offer is characterized by a very high level and a wide
disciplinar spectrum
8. The recruitment process is open, transparent, efficient and supportive,
internationally comparable and tailored to the advertised positions.
9. ABC-PhD is a publishing PhD (high quality less quantity) and it is not a PhD
by Publication (Doctoral Thesis must be an original knowledge advancement
only partially anticipated in other publications)
10. ABC-PhD and its PhD Candidates have strong relations with stakeholders
This will provide the best occupational opportunities for a researcher looking for
an academic career as well as for an employment in research centres, architectural
and engineering design enterprises, public bodies or private societies that need
highly qualified personnel.

Career
Opportunities

As ABC-PhD and its Candidates have strong relations with stakeholders, this will
provide them the best occupational opportunities as researcher (in universities
as well in research centres), in architectural and engineering design enterprises,
public bodies or private societies that need highly qualified personnel.
The ABC-PhD Doctor is expected become an international investigator able to
shoulder responsibilities of R&D activities, the planning and management of
control activities and the critical assessment of any policy and project concerning
built environment and built asset, for public and private bodies. Moreover, these
high level competencies have valued our Doctors at an international level, in any
activity related to of Built Environment transformation as esteemed:
Professional, acting independently or in engineering and architectural firms;
Project, Construction Manager or a Facility Manager, for Construction Industry,
Real Estate and Asset Management;
Independent Consultant;
Outstanding Intellectual.

Eligible students

Requirements for participation in the selection, for Italian and foreign citizens, are
described in the Politecnico di Milano Ph.D admission selection call published
each year.

Scholarships

Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering Ph.D. scholarships

are generally awarded by the Politecnico di Milano; additional research scholarship
may be provided by companies and external institutions.
