December 2015

From the Pastor

WELCOME to the

Signal

Dinner with the Pastor is what we

call our prospective membership
class. Every couple of months we
invite everyone who wants to learn
more about our church to a free
dinner, where we take the time to
share some of the exciting things
the Lord is doing in our fellowship,
and how people can connect with
us. Its always a relaxed, fun time
where theres lots of dialogue and
new friendships. Our deacons are
always there to serve as mentors
to anyone who decides to join. In
a church as large as ours, its essential that we find times and ways
where new people have an easy
entrance into our fellowship. Dinner with the Pastor is one of the
most important things our church
does, so we give it a lot of attention. Its also one of the most fun.
Our last Dinner with the Pastor was
one of the most interesting and en-

couraging ones weve had. It took

Christmas T.R.U.T.H. and Traditions

Christmas for so many is a time full of great memories, fun family traditions,
and a time for people to get together. As this Christmas season is upon
us, please remember to slow down and enjoy Christmas for the true
meaning:Jesus. I was reading a devotion from Jessica Wolstenholm, and
she suggests the following:
When sharing the Bible, its stories and key concepts with children, follow
these simple steps that will lead them to the T.R.U.T.H. while building their
faith.
T-Tell the story.
R-Remind your child of their place in it.
U-Uncover big ideas that apply to their life.
T-Take action by modeling and showing your child how to model.
H-Hide it in their hearts through memorization and ongoing discussion.
You can choose a family verse or truth statement to memorize and discuss as you continue to unpack
what youve learned. When you keep the discussion going and carry it into your everyday lives, your kids
begin to see how to apply truth as they are living life. Faith building is a process, a part of your childs
overall spiritual journey. Even when it seems like they are not getting it or are too young to understand,
we can be encouraged to keep at it by remembering we are planting seeds that will grow into faith.
If you dont already, I encourage you to start reading the Christmas story in the Bible found in Matthew
and Luke. This is a great family tradition to start! Its so important to make time with your children and
explain the true meaning of Christmas and why we celebrate.
Lex Kids wants to provide a resource for your family to use to countdown to Christmas, (even though I am
sure children have already started!) so Advent calendars will be made available for children on November
29 in the childrens building lobby. Please feel free to pick up as many as you would like
to share with friends, families and neighbors.
On Wednesday, December 16, preschoolers are going to have a Happy Birthday, Jesus
party! This will be our last Wired for the year. We will start back on January 6.
Merry CHRISTmas!

In December, we are adopting a family from the
Angel Tree. All month long, our kids will work to fill
their quarter catchers with quarters. Our goal is
to collect $700 in order to adopt the largest family
on the angel tree. Help us to bless another family
with Christmas gifts this season.

Quarter catchers will be available beginning

November 29, and we will collect through
December 20. Children can turn them into their
Sunday school classes or in the Childrens Building.

Tacky Christmas Sweater Party

Hey Kids, you know those ugly Christmas sweaters buried deep in your moms closet? Time to pull them out!
You can also go thrift store shopping. We are having a

during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday School hour as we celebrate Christmas! Prizes will be given for the ugliest, tackiest, and most original sweaters. Have some fun with this
one! We cant wait to see what you come up with!

One Bright Night...

On October 29th, we hosted 4,000 people and gave away 1,000 bags of candy in our parking lot for our
Light up the Night Fall Festival. When the forecast threatened to rain out our original date that we had
been promoting for months, we knew there was potential risk from a promotional standpoint. We knew
that attendance may be impacted. So, a couple of days before, our staff and church members walked the
parking lot and prayed. We prayed that the word would get out about the event, for logistics of the event
and for the light of Jesus to shine brightly. He, once again, gave us more than we could ask or imagine.
Kids and their families entered our parking lot in droves. Kids danced to the music. They were greeted
kindly and excitedly by our church members at the trunk or treat. They buried their faces in cotton candy
and bags of popcorn. They rode rides, laughed and played.
Prayers moving forward please pray for the follow-up. Pray that our influence with those 4,000 wont
be limited to those two hours in our parking lot. Pray that well have a chance to build relationships with
many of those who attended. Finally, praise God for His faithfulness and giving us the opportunity to
share the light of Jesus with our community. 308 E. Main St. was truly a bright light in the darkness that
night!
So, thank you. Thank you for praying over this event, bringing candy, helping with set-up, decorating your
trunk, making popcorn and cotton candy, answering questions at the information desk, helping with
clean up, and participating in this event. We truly would not be able to pull off this event without your
help.

Student Ministry Families,

2015 has been a year to remember. God has been so faithful to our ministry. We have seen
many salvations and baptisms that deserve our praise and thanksgiving. We attribute a lot
of our success to all our incredible leaders and praying parents. These men and women are
the backbone of this ministry. I want to say a big thank you to anyone who has supported
and served in this ministry. You are making a difference! December is filled with wonderful
opportunities to get plugged into this ministry. Make sure to get your student to Encounter 431
on Wednesday nights, Sunday Mornings with students at 10:30 a.m., our Christmas Party on
December 16 and Christmas at the Barn on December 11 and 12.
We are going to have a spring/summer parents meeting on January 10. This
meeting will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon in The City (Family Life

Fulfilling the Great Commission

The LBC student ministry believes in making disciples here in Lexington and around the world.
Over the past semester there have been four different student-led Bible studies spring up in our
middle and high school groups. God is doing some amazing things in and through our student
ministry. If you are looking for a place to serve, we are always open to invest in adults who want
to invest in students.
One of the ways that we are fulfilling the Great Commission is each summer we are sending
teams of families to Nicaragua. We are looking at having two teams go two different weeks in
July (6-13;13-20) if enough interest is there. Allowing students to go with parents
opens up opportunities for middle school students to attend this international
trip. If you are interested in going or hearing more about this trip, please attend
the parents meeting on January 10 at 4 p.m. in The City. The cut-off date for
this trip is March 27.

SENIOR ADULTS

& Congregational Care

Due the flooding in October, we needed to reschedule our

Parent Care Conversation Seminar. Are there some changes
happening in your parents lives that you a little worried about
them? Have you found yourself in a place where the tables are
beginning to turn, where you are taking some responsibility for
some of your parents physical, financial or emotional needs?
Adult children more and more are discovering their need to
have some difficult conversations with their parents about
finances and other things but are afraid to start them.
On Sunday afternoon, January 24 at 12 p.m., Lexington Baptist
Church will host a seminar designed to help you think through
some of the basic steps in providing parent care. The seminar is titled, The Parent Care Conversation:
The Essential Conversations Parents and Adult Children Should HaveBut Nobody Will Start. Dr. Kevin
Skipper and Chris Sheffield co-authored the book The Parent Care Conversation and will be on our
campus to get you started in the right direction towards having these important conversations.
Topics will include: How to honor your father and mother a Biblical approach to the conversations,
tasks and challenges of parent care; the money conversation; the house conversation; the levels of care
conversation; the essential legal conversation. We will wrap our time together with an optional panel
discussion to give you an opportunity to ask questions related to parent care.
Cost for this seminar will be $15 which covers lunch and all materials and handouts. You can register by
contacting Marceil Mangum, ministry assistant to senior adults and congregational care, at 803-9968843 or marceil@lexingtonbaptist.org.

Service Opportunity: Operation Christmas Child Processing Center

Packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child has always been one
of my familys favorite activities to begin the holiday season. Our church
collected more than 700 shoeboxes and sent them to Samaritan Purses
OCC Processing Center in November. I love that for the 700+ boxes we
collect each year, we pray for where God will deliver them and for the
exposure to the Gospel a little boy or girl will receive through them.
Have you wondered what kind of manpower it takes to get thousands of
shoeboxes around the world? This month, we have a unique opportunity
to go to the processing center in Charlotte, NC and help prepare
shoeboxes on a greater scale. We will ensure boxes are safe for travel and that each have enough candy,
toys and whatever else might be needed to provide a great experience for whomever will open them.
Our volunteers will work from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 15. We will
leave from the church at 7:30 a.m. and return the same day around 5 p.m. I hope
youll pray about joining me for this exciting service opportunity. Call or email Marceil
(803.996.8843, marceil@lexingtonbaptist.org) with any
questions or to sign up. Due to the limited number of
Jerry Freeman

EQUIPPING MINISTRY

Helping you to become fully-devoted disciples of Jesus

I know you have heard over the years what Christmas is not. Christmas isnt about the trees, the lights
or the presents. I get that, and I understand that, I really do. I just wonder if we know what Christmas
TIME really is.
1. Christmas is a time to seek Jesus. Think back to the Christmas story. The Magi came from the east
seeking the Messiah. The word Magi describes these men as astrologers, magicians or sorcerers. They
came from places like Babylon and Persia. They believed the stars held the truth of the future. Consider
though, they came seeking Jesus. This Christmas, instead of chasing the fast pace of the season, simply
slow down and seek Jesus.
2. Christmas is a time for worship. Most Christian scholars believe the Magi travelled around 1,000
miles on their journey to see the newborn king. That really fascinates me, considering we struggle to get
people to drive a few short miles to come to worship in our day. Imagine the weather they faced, the days,
weeks and months they traveled. I hope this Christmas season when we are thinking about how difficult
it might be for us to get to worship on Sunday, we will think about the Magis journey.
3. Christmas is a time to sacrifice. Think for a moment what the Magi sacrificed. They sacrificed time
and treasures for the Lord. It is believed the journey of the Magi took up to two years. That is why Herod
decreed all males age two and under be killed. When they finally reached Jesus, they were bearing
expensive gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. It was their time and treasure that the Magi sacrificed. In our
world today, it is time for us to sacrifice. Could we find the time to give to the Lord? Of course we could,
if we are willing. Could we find money to give in tithes and offerings? Of course we could, if we are willing.
This Christmas we can all learn to sacrifice.
4. Christmas is a time for building a new relationship with Jesus. By making the journey of a lifetime
they became a part of the story for all time. When the Magi entered the house where Jesus was, they
fell down and worshipped Him. They were signaling the beginning of a new and fresh relationship with
the King. This Christmas, do you need to start a fresh, new relationship with Christ?
Has 2015 been a year you would want to forget? Start fresh and new with Christ this
Christmas.
Christmas is a great TIME to grow in the Lord and be obedient to His word. I look
forward to seeing you at church this Christmas, and I hope

New Wednesday Night Supper Times

In order to better serve our church family, many of whom commute to church on Wednesday
nights directly from work in downtown Columbia, we are excited to announce our new dinner
time for 2016 will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All other activity times will remain the same,
but we hope that this additional time will allow for more of our church family to attend our
Wednesday evening meals. This change will be effective in January of 2016.

11

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared
beforehand, that we should walk in them.
- Ephesians 2:10
Dear Church Family,
I have been serving as the Interim Missions Ministry Assistant for the past several weeks and have
been given this great privilege of writing to you this month. I can truly say it is an opportunity that
I never guessed I would have. Yet, in the past few years, God has given me several of these types of
opportunities, and I am well aware that I have done nothing to deserve them. We serve such an amazing
God who lavishes us with His love in ways that are unexpected.
I became a Nana this year. Wow, what an incredible experience to watch that beautiful baby girl being
born into this world and to hear her very first cry! Our sweet Hallie is now six months old, and Charles
and I are having such a wonderful time with her. We absolutely love being grandparents. This is just one
of the ways God has blessed me recently.
God has given me several amazing opportunities this year to serve Him with my LBC church family in
some unique places. I had the opportunity to participate in four international, short-term mission trips
and one national trip. I have listened to, prayed with and encouraged ladies who are serving in areas
where followers of Christ are few to none. I played with and taught Bible lessons to dusty Haitian orphans
who are living in deep poverty. I walked alongside our IMB Central Asia partners, Venezuelan believers
and Persian speaking believers, giving out the gift of an evangelistic pamphlet and SD card loaded with
the Bible and the Jesus Film in several Persian languages during the celebration of the Persian New Year.
I had the privilege of rocking and playing with sweet babies while their parents, as new IMB workers,
were in training meetings learning how to better connect with the people groups they are living among. I
also participated in a trip to New York City to learn more about and connect with people from South and
Central Asia who have come to the U.S. to live. During that week, I saw our Farsi-speaking team member
sit with two Afghan men with his Bible open, sharing with them how Jesus came as a sacrifice and paid
the penalty for our sins so that they, too, could have a personal relationship with Him. They accepted this
truth and later sent word that they would be sharing with their friends all that my teammate had shared
with them.
I continue to be amazed that God gave me the privilege to join with others of the LBC family to serve Him
in all of these areas.

12

There are many others at LBC who participated in mission trips this year, like the families who traveled
to Nicaragua to serve with a local church and school. I believe they would agree that when you give of
yourself to serve God by serving others in this way, He broadens your perspective of His world and your
relationship with Him deepens.

In addition to those who participated in short-term trips, many serve right here in the Lexington area. We
have LBC family members who serve our community with the:
ARISE Ministry, doing home repairs for those in need (including those impacted by the recent flooding)
Oil Change Ministry, doing basic auto upkeep for single mothers and widows
Families of Hope Ministry, providing assistance to families who have adopted
or are serving as foster parents
Fishers of Men Prison Ministry, leading Bible study and worship in local mens and womens prisons
Crisis Ministry, helping at LICS and going in the community to feed those
who are homeless through our Streetside Ministry
Friendship Partners, who meet with international people in the area who need friends & connection
School Time Bible Ministry, teaching Bible lessons to local school children during the school day
As you can see, there are many opportunities for all of us to serve. If you havent yet
been able to participate in one of these ministries or to join a team on a short-term
mission trip, I encourage you to ask God where He would have you serve. I full believe
that He will answer you, so you when He does, please call the LBC Missions Office at
