UDAIPUR OF MY DREAMS
There are many aspects of the concept of Smart Cities. So, there would be many ideas
and suggestions for any aspiring smart city. But, the planners need to first decide about the
priorities among the various needs and aspirations of the city and its citizens. The first and
foremost important issue is Peoples Participation in Local Governance (and not only in planning
but in management also). How can a city be regarded a smart city, if its residents are not smartly
participating in the governance of their neighborhood locality?
Top priority smart solution/idea to making Udaipur Smart city
1. Tourism
Udaipur is city of Lakes, Wedding destination and Heritage city. So Tourism
development is top priority. Tourism is a broader term and includes almost all the other activities.
So separate work need to strengthening of Tourist Reception Center, Tourist Police, Guide
Facility, more Tourist Destination for making at least three day stay, Beautiful Heritage walk,
Forest Tracking and Safari, Water Sports, App for tourist showing all details of tourist point,
public utilities, proper signage in Hindi and English both language.
2. Lake Conservation and Beautification
Lakes are life line of Udaipur and these should be well maintained with good quality of
water. Lake front beautification, Floating Musical Fountains, elegant boats, Pedestrian way
around the lakes, No entry for motorized vehicle, Laser Sound and Light show must be
managed.
3. Heritage Conservation
Udaipur wall city area has unique heritage properties (both government and private).
Heritage walk is an also important attraction. Faade conservation of these with citizen
consultation must be done. Conservation of Heritage Bawaries, Kunds, Temples and other
buildings must be taken in priority.
4. Urban Mobility
Urban mobility is next important issue and it is directly related with comfort of citizens and
tourist. Almost all the junctions are defective and remain congested in peak hours. Dividers are

also in bad conditions. Broken iron grills and kerb stones are common on every road. Lake of
buses and uncontrolled auto create traffic jam. Present scenario cannot take us to Smart city.
What we can do is - Well designed rotaries, beautiful dividers with plantation, low floor buses
on certain routes in sufficient quantity with GPS system and well developed Bus shelters
showing the detail of each bus location, number and probable time, Battery operated car taxi
in wall city area, mechanized parking, compulsion of parking to every builder by law, few
roads only for pedestrian, road lining, proper sign boards.
5. Solid Waste Management
Sanitation is the next important issue and it is directly related with health of citizens. Now
science has developed so many techniques for disposal of all sorts of wastes and smart cities
must make use of them. Every citizen must be made aware of system of sorting and disposing
different sorts of solid wastes. Every household should have two waste collecting bins. One bin
for the waste bio-degradable or organic (Wet) wastes and the second bin for inorganic (Dry)
waste. Collection from door to door must be GPS enabled covered vehicles by municipality.
Present dustbins are not efficient so new dustbin with sensor must be installed so that control
centre can get the information about each dustbin. This will reduce the cost and time and inturn
will increase the efficiency. Waste treatment plant must be of latest technology so that maximum
byproduct can be recovered and landfill site load reduces a lot.
6. Sewerage and Drainage System
Present sewerage system has lot of leakage and damaged manholes. Sewer line laid in
waterbody, do we call it smart? Well designed, good quality of pipe, laid sewerage network with
best efficient pumping stations and latest technology Sewage Treatment Plant is required to make
the hygienic Smart city.
7. E-Governance and Citizen Services
Today is the time of Information Technology and even a layman is having smart mobile.
So all the government offices must have well established IT cell and all the activity should be
paperless and available online to citizens. Smartcity must be completely Wi-Fi. All the cables
must be underground. Citizen may give his/her opinion anytime from anywhere.
8. Environment, Green Spaces and Energy Management
Environment is now an enough emphasized and discussed subject; so enough ideas,
norms and plans for environmental balance and sustainability are available. Therefore people,

especially planners are enough aware about environmental considerations like enough open
spaces, greenery (plantation along the major roads, parks, colony gardens), preserving lakes and
other water bodies, rain-water harvesting and compulsory roof water harvesting for new
residential or industrial buildings, etc. Luckily Udaipur has the ample space for open and green
space and the need is to develop and maintain it. Use of LED lights, timer switches, solar lights,
discouraging motorized vehicles, vehicle pool for all organizations will help a lot.
9. Safety and Security
Of common man and tourist and not only of VIPs and of special localities. Use of CCTV
camera GPS enabled vehicles and wireless woki-toki to police with smart control room.
10. Water Supply
Present water supply is satisfactory but for Smart city we need no road cut to repair
leakage so replacing of old pipeline by latest K7 DI pipe with skada meters to better
management. We have to use Water Recycling Technology for providing water to garden and
green spaces. We must plan to install many decentralized water recycling plants or units for
enough supply of water to our greenery.
11. Health and Social infra-structure
Udaipur is having wonderful medical facility and the need is to organize the thing. App
should be developed having complete database and MIS. Smart communities also need enough
auditoriums, conference halls, libraries, sport grounds, fairs & weekly markets, etc
12. Connectivity to Rest of World
Connectivity is also important as Jaipur Highway is in bad condition. Flight Frequency is
too less and this must be taken care of.
By smart planning over these major aspects; we can make Udaipur a real Smart City.
