Grammar
Which tense is used in the title of the song? (simple past)
..................................................................................
How do we form this tense? ( regular verbs, irregular verbs...)
...................................................................................
When do we use this tense?
.
Can you give me some signal words of this tense? (Yesterday, last week,
a month ago, in 2002)
..
Through the exercises the pupils have discovered the simple past. Now
the purpose is that they try to find out how we form it, when we use it,
and what different signals for this tense could be. They can understand
that a timeline can be very helpful to discover when an event took place.
.
Put these verbs in the simple past:
Infinitive
to work
to listen
to help
to spell
to play
to talk
to walk
to learn

In this exercise the pupils see how you have to form a negative sentence
with the past simple. They practise it and understand that if you use
the past form of To do, you dont have to conjugate the next verb,
you just use the infinitive. Because: After did/didnt always +
infinitive!

The first thing weve done was think about which part of grammar we
would take. We brainstormed a little and came up with the idea of using
the Simple Past. We then searched for a song in which this tense is used.
After a while we found the song Because you loved me by Celine Dion,
this seemed just perfect for our groupwork. We thought it would be nice to
start with a few questions before the pupils could listen to the song, in
order to know more about their foreknowledge, to get their attention and
to improve their involvement.
We erased the simple past verbs in the song, with the intention of letting
the pupils fill in the blank spaces while they would be listening to the
song. By doing this, they try to fill in the simple past without knowing it.
Then, we thought about asking them what they think about the song. We
would be able to tell them that a grammar lesson doenst have to be
boring. We thought to do a short exercise about the right place of the
verb. This is also a short repetion of the learned spelling.
The pupils can then discover the way of writing and using the tense in an
exercise. After that, we thought it would be interesting to do a short
exercise about where the right verbs have to be as a short repetition of
the learned spelling.
We then thought about discovering the theoretical side of the tense
together with the pupils and fill our findings in on the worksheets
(form, use, signal words).
After the revision of the theoretical aspect we would let the pupils
transform the verbs into the simple past in pairs. They can use the list of
the irregular verbs, because they havent studied them yet, they still have
to learn them. In the sentences we put a little more information about the
singer and the song. This makes it more attractive for the pupils, since
music is close to their daily life. After that, we planned a crossword puzzle
to practise the simple past. We chose this because this is another form of
an exercise then the previous ones, its more playful and it catches the
pupils eyes.
11
Last but one we would try to teach the negative of the simple past. With
the help of an example, the teacher and the pupils will search for its
formation. Thats why we would try to do this exercise with the entire
class.
And last but not least we thought it would be interesting if the pupils
would match the words that we used during the lesson with their
meaning.

Listening: 1.1, 1.2
Reading: 2.7, 2.8, 2.11
Speaking: 3.13, 3.15, 3.17
Writing: 4.19, 4.20, 4.21
Formation objectives
a) Language: Pupils learn that it is important to understand and know
the grammatical rules, when you are learning a language. Especially
for the pupils, they learn there is a difference between Past Simple
(action completely over) and the Present Perfect (action linked with
present)
b) learning strategies: 2, 5, 11, 12, 13
c) personality formation: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
d) World view: We use tenses in every language. Pupils are able to
explain their opinion about the grammar they are learning. They are
open-minded and they can integrate a certain amount of mental
discipline, even when the material is difficult. They understand that
in their lives, they will have to deal with a lot of difficult things, so
does everyone. They also get to know the customs of Englishspeaking countries when it comes to telling something that has
happened in the past.
