ThefilmopensintheharshstreetsofMexico,whereayoungmannamedOctavioandhispalJorgearespeedingdown
theroad.InthebackseatoftheircarliesOctavio'sdog,Cofi,arottweilerwho'sbleedingallovertheseat.Octaviois
freakingout,notjustbecausehehastotakeCofitoaveterinarian,butheandJorgearealsobeingchasedbysomethugs
inayellowtruck,shootingatthem.Eventually,Octaviolosesthem,butwreckshiscaratanintersection.Thiswrecksets
thestagefortherestoftheplot.
Wethencutbackafewdays,whereweseeapunknamedJarochosubmittinghisdogintothebackalleydogfights,held
byoverweightthugGerardo,knownas"Fatso".Jarocho'sdogwinsthefight,killingtheotherdog,andJarochocollectsan
easy20,000pesos.Jarochoisfeelingsohighandmightythathedecidestolethiswinningdoglooseonsomestrays,but
isstoppedwhenavagrantnamedElChivopullsoutamachete,causingJarochoandhispalstowalkaway.Instead,
JarochoseesOctavio'srottweiler,Cofi,wanderingthestreets,andfullyawareofthis,heletshisdoglooseonit.Wethen
seearundownhome,whereOctavioliveswithhismother,hisbrother,Ramiro,andRamiro'swife,Susana.Octaviois
secretlyinlovewithSusana,anddespisesRamiro,whobeatsandcheatsonher.Ramiroworksascashieratalocal
supermarketandisconstantlyoutofmoney,sohecan'tpayfordiapersormilkforthebaby,whichfrustratesSusana.To
earnalittleextracash,Ramiroandhisbuddyholdupgasstations,dugstoresandgroceries.Oneday,Ramirosays,hewill
robabank,andgetallthemoneyheneeds.
JorgeeventuallyshowsupatOctavio's,andtellshimthatCofikilledJarocho'sdog.CofirunsuptoOctavio,coveredin
blood,andsitsbyhismaster.Suddenly,Jarochodrivesup(intheyellowtruck)anddemandsthatOctaviogivehimthe
moneyhewilllosenowthathisdogisdead;alternatively,OctaviocanlendCofitohim.Octaviorefuses,butJarocho
threatenshimandsaysthatOctaviooweshim.OctaviojustlaughsasJarochodrivesaway.ThisgivesOctavioanidea.He
decidestosubmitCofiintothelocaldogfights,andtalkstoFatso.AfterseeingCofiwinafightquickly,Fatsoagreesto
letOctavioparticipate,andsaysthatCofiisgoodforeightfights.Everytimethere'safight,Jarochoentersanewdog,
andeverytime,Cofikillsit.Soon,Octavioisrakinginsomeseriouscash.ItisnowthatheasksSusanatogoawaywith
him,totheborderwheretheycouldopenalittleshopandlivetogetherwithSusana'sbaby.Susanapolitelyrefuses,
sayingherloveisforRamiro.However,SusanadoesconfideinOctaviothatsheispregnantagain,andifRamirofinds
out,he'llbeveryangry.Octaviopromisesnottotell.Onenight,OctaviogoestothedrugstorethatRamiroworksat,and
buyssomesuppliesforthebaby.Ramirogetsannoyed,claimingthathecanprovideforhisownchild,andthreatens
Octavio.OctaviotellsRamirothathe'snotafraidofhim,andheadbuttshimintheface,makingRamiro'snosebleed.
WhenRamirogetshome,hebeatsthecrapoutofOctavio.
AfterwinningmoremoneyfromCofi'sfights,OctaviokeepspushingSusanatogoawaywithhim.Heeventriestomake
passesather,butshekeepsbrushinghimaway.Finally,however,Susanagivesin,andsheandOctavioembarkonan

affair.Heasksherwhatshe'sgoingtonameherunbornchild.Shesaysifit'sagirl,thenSusanawouldbenice.Octavio
suggestshisownnameifit'saboy,butSusanadoesnotrespondtothat.Soon,Ramirobeginstocatchonaboutwhere
Octavio'smoneycomesfrom,andinsistsonhavinghalfofwhatOctaviogets,sinceCofiistechnicallyRamiro'sdog.
Octaviorefuses.Ramirothenpullsoutagun,pointsitatCofi,andfires.Octaviojumps,butthegunisempty.Ramiro
thendemandshalfoftheearnings.
Afewdayslater,FatsonotifiesOctaviothatJarochohasaClassAfightingdog,andthathechallengesOctaviotoa
privatefight,withnooutsidebets,foracool40,000.Octavioaccepts,butasksFatsoforafavor.Thefavor,asitturnsout,
isgettingridofRamiro,so,afterworkonenight,RamiroisjumpedbyFatso'sthugs,takentothemiddleofnowhere,and
beatentoaninchofhislife.ThissceneplayssimultaneouslywithOctavioandSusanahavingsexontopofthewashing
machine.Octaviothenaskshertocomeawaywithhim,thatweekend,sincehe'sabouttohitabigscore.Thenightbefore
thefight,though,OctaviolearnsthatRamirohasleft,withSusanaandthebaby.Octaviosearcheshisthings,andfinds
thatmostofhiswinningsaregoneaswell.Thenextday,heandJorgescroungeupabout20,000.WhileOctaviois
countingthemoney,Jorgeiswatchingatalkshow,featuingabeautifulyoungmodelnamedValeria(Thiscomesinto
playlater).
OctavioandJorgegothefight,andeventhoughtheyhavejust20,000insteadoftheinitial40,000,Jarochoagrees,and
thefightbegins.Cofiisdoingsomeseriousdamagetotheotherdog,whensuddenly,Jarochopullsoutagunandshoots
Cofi.Octaviofreaksout,andtellsFatsotodosomething,butFatsojustclaimsthatthisisbetweenthem.Jorgeand
OctaviocarryCofitotheircar,andputhiminthebackseat.OctaviotellsJorgetostartthecarandkeepitrunning,then
walksbackinside,andstabsJarochointhestomach.Octaviothenrunsbacktohiscar,andspeedsaway,beingpursued
byJarocho'sthugs.Thisiswherethewreckoccurs.
Thenextstoryinvolvesthemodel,Valeria,whowasseenearlier.Shehasjustfinishedthetalkshow,andisbeing
escortedbyadashingoldermoviestar,whoisrumoredtobeherboyfriend.Heleadshertoanicelyfurnishedapartment,
withallofherthingsandaniceviewofanadvertisementonabillboardwithherpictureonit.Valeriafindsthisrather
spooky,untilherrealboyfriend,anoldermannamedDaniel,surprisesher.He'sboughttheapartmentforthem,with
everythinghehad,andlefthiswifeandtwodaughtersforthemuchyoungerValeria.Whensherunstoembracehim,part
ofthefloorgivesunderherheels.Danielhasalsobroughtherdog,alittleterrier(Ithink)namedRichie.Theirdinneris
complete,exceptforthewine,whichValeriagoestoget.She'sinhercarwithRichie,andwhenshepullsintoacertain
intersection,sheisblindsidedbyOctavio.Valeriaisrushedtoahospital,whereDaniellearnsfromherdoctorthat
Valeria'srightleghasalmostbeencompletelycrushed,butit'ssalvageable.Richie,however,survivedthecrashwithouta
scratchonhim.Valeriaisfinallyallowedtogohome,butshegrowsboredofbeingalonewhileDanielisatwork.One
day,whilesheisplayingfetchwithRichie,theballrollsintotheholeinthefloor,andRichieclimbsintofindit.Valeria
callshimback,buthedoesn'tcome.WhenDanielcomeshomefivehourslater,Richiestillhasn'tcomeback,andValeria

isgrowingworried.Inthemiddleofthenight,ValeriacanhearRichiescratchingandwhimpering.ShetellsDanieltogo
rescueRichie,butDanielhasnosuccess.ItisduringthisperiodoftimethatValeriaandDaniel'srelationshipgrows
strained.SheisconstantlynaggingathimfornottryingtorescueRichie,andheishavingsecondthoughtsaboutleaving
hiswife.Onenight,theyhaveanenormousfight,withthesoundsofRichietryingtoescapeinthebackground.Thenext
morning,DanieltellsValeriahe'llbehomeinafewhours.Valeriasaysshedoesn'tcareifhenevercomesbackatall.
Thatnight,Danielcomeshome,butValeriahaslockedhimoutoftheirbedroom.Daniel,notinthemoodforafight,
decidestosleeponthecouch.Laterintothenight,hedemandstobeletbackin.Hefinallybreaksdownthedoor,and
findsValerialyingonthefloor,unconscious.Danielrusheshertothehospital,whereherdoctorexplainsthatherleg
eventuallybecameinfectedwithgangreneandhadtobeamputated.Danielgoeshomethatnight,andafterhearing
Richie,tearsapartthefloor,untilhefindsthepoorlittledog,lyingunconscious.ThesoundsheandValeriahadbeen
hearingwereactuallysomeratsthatinhabitedthebuilding.Valeriafinallycomeshome,andisveryupset.Shegoestothe
windowandtakesDaniel'shand.Theadvertisementthathadoncehadherpictureonitisnowgone,andthebillboardis
nowupforrental.
Thefinalstoryinvolvesthevagrant,ElChivo.Chivowandersthestreetsandcollectsthecity'sstrays.Also,heisapart
timehitman.Earlyinthefilm,heshotabusinessmaninarestaurantinbroaddaylight.Later,heisreadingthenewspaper
aboutthemurder,andthepaperstatesthatnosuspectshavebeenfound.Onanotherpage,Chivoreadstheobituaryofa
woman.Hebeginstotearup,andgoestothefuneral.Hestandsandwatchestheservicefromafar.Anolderwomanatthe
funeralseeshim,andescortsthedeceased'sdaughteraway.Then,thewomanconfrontChivo,andtellshimtogoaway.It
isrevealedthatthewomanishissisterinlaw,andtheyounggirlwashisestrangeddaughter,whothinksthatChivois
dead.Throughsomeexplanationsfromacrookedcop,welearnthatChivousedtobeaprofessor,butonedayhewent
madandjoinedtheguerrillas.Helefthiswifeanddaughterandeventuallywascapturedandservedtimeinprison.When
thecopfoundhim,Chivowasnothingmorethanawino,butthecophiredChivotodosomehits,andChivowassogood,
thatthecopkeepssendingbusinesshisway.Anewassignmentcomesup,anditinvolvesayoungbusinessmanwho
wantshispartnerdead.Chivoasksfor100,000upfront,anddemandsanother50,000oncethejobisdone.Chivothen
beginstofollowthepartneraround.Oneday,whilestandingatthecornerofastreet,Chivoseestwocarscollide(Octavio
andValeria).ChivorushesovertoOctavio'scar,andhelpsOctavioout.Octaviohasbrokenhisleg,andhassomegashes
tohishead,butJorgeiskilled.HealsoswipesOctavio'smoneyandwalletandeventakesthewoundedCofibacktohis
hideaway.ChivonursesCofibacktohealth.Healsomakesseveralattemptstoestablishcontactwithhisdaughter,but
nothingcomesofit.Heevenbreaksintoherapartmentwhensheisnotthere,andstealsagraduationpictureofher,her
mother,andherstepfather.Chivogoestoaphotobooth,takessomepicturesofhisshaggyandweatheredface,andplaces
hisphotooverthefaceofthestepfather.Ashepassesthephotobooth,ChivoseesRamiro,withSusanaandtheirbaby.
Ramirofinallydecidestorobthebankwithhisbuddy,andisalmostsuccessful,untilanoffdutycoprushesinandshoots
Ramiro,killinghim.Athisfuneral,Octavio,nowbaldwithcutsonhisheadandbeingsupportedbycrutches,confronts
Susana,andtellsherthatheisleavingthatweekend,andthathe'llwaitforher.Susanasaysno,thatOctaviodoesn'tgetit,

andfinallydeclaresthattheunbornchildwillbenamedRamiro.Afewdayslater,Octaviowaitsatthebusstationforher,
butshenevershows.Octaviodoesnotgetontothebus.
Oneday,ChivocomeshomeandfindsCofi,withbloodalloverhim.Chivorushestothebackofhishideawayandfinds
hisotherdogsaredead,killedbyCofi.Chivoissotornupaboutthis,hepullsouthisgunandisabouttoshootCofi,but
can'tbringhimselftodoit.Heburnstheremainsoftheotherdogs,anddecidestocarryoutthehit.Heapprehendsthe
partnerataBlockbuster,andtakeshimbacktohishideaway.Chivotiesthepartnerupagainstapole,andleaveshim
thereforafewdays,yetdoesnotkillhim.Chivothencontactsthebusinessmanandtellshimtocometothehideaway.
Thebusinessmanshowsupwiththerestofthemoney,butisshockedtoseehispartnerstillalive.Chivoquicklyturnsthe
tables,andtiesthebusinessmanupaswell.Chivothenlearnsthatthetwomenarenotonlypartner,butbrothersaswell.
Thenextmorning,Chivoawakesandshavesandcutshishair.Hestealsthebusinessman'ssuit,andleavesthetwothere,
stilltieduploosely,butplacesaloadedgunbetweenthem,sotheywillkilleachother.Hestopsatthephotoboothand
takesanotherpicture,thistimewithhiscleanedupface.ChivotakesCofiandtheygobacktoChivo'sdaughter's
apartment.Usingthebusinessman'scellphone,Chivocallshisdaughter'sphoneandleavesamessage,sayinghowsorry
heisthathewasn'tthereforher,andthathelovesher.Hethentakesoutthegraduationphoto,andputsthenewphotoon
topoftheoldone.Hethensellsthebusinessman'sSUVtoachopshop,andwandersintotheunknown,withCofibyhis
side.

Thestory,setin1999,istoldinflashbackform:inJune1974afederaljusticeagent,BenjamnEspsito,becomes
spellboundbyandsubsequentlyentangledintheinvestigationofthecrimeofayoungwoman,brutallyrapedand
murderedinsideherhouseinaBuenosAiresneighbourhood.Herwidowedhusband,bankemployeeRicardoMorales,is
shockedbythenews;Espsitovowstofindthekillerandbringhimtojustice.Inhisordealheisaidedbyhisalcoholic
assistentPabloSandovalandanewcomer,theupperclasslawyerIreneMenndezHastings,whotakesoveras
departmentchief.Espsito'srivalingpartnerRomanopinsthemurderontwoimmigrantworkerssoastogetridofthe
matteranissuethatenragesEspsito,whoattacksRomanoinafury.
HefindsatipsoonenoughwhilelookingoversomeoldpicturesprovidedbyMorales:hecomesacrossadubiousyoung
manidentifiedasIsidoroGmezwholooksatthevictiminasuspiciouswayinseveralphotos.Espsitoinvestigates
thewhereaboutsofGmez,anddeterminesthatheislivingandworkinginBuenosAires,butfailstolocatehim.
EspsitoandSandovalbreakintoGmez'shouseholdinthecityofChivilcoy,hometownnotonlyofGmez,butalsoof
Morales'sillfatedwife.Duringtheillegalsearch,they(unwillingly)stealasetofletterswrittenbythesuspecttohis
mother.BackinBuenosAires,thedeedearnsthemtroublebackatthecourthouse,andneithermakeanythingoutthe
letters.Inaddition,GmezremainsatlargeduetoacarelessphonecallmadeearlierbyMorales,whodesperatelywanted

toapprehendthekillerofhiswife.Intheend,itisSandovalwhocomesacrossanewlead:afellowdrinkerinthebar
identifiesthevariousnamesmentionedinthelettersasbeingthoseofvarioussoccerplayersofRacingClub.
AfteridentifyinghimasaRacingClubfan,EspsitoandSandovalattendasoccermatchwhereRacingClubplays
againstHuracninthehopeofcatchingGmez.WiththeassistanceofpoliceofficerMolinariandhismen,theyspothim
amongthecrowd,butasuddengoalprovidesthenecessarydisturbanceforGmeztoslipaway.Asurrealpursuitensues
inwhichGmeznearlyvanishes,buthe'sultimatelyknockeddowninthemiddleofthepitch.EspsitoandIrene
Hastingssubsequentlystageafake,largelyillegalinterrogationattheoffice.Theysucceedinbringinghimtoconfessthe
murderbytauntinghimandhurtinghismachopride.
Justiceseemsserved;however,barelyayearlater,GmezisreleasedbyaspitefulRomano,whoisnowworkingfora
governmentagency.Amidincreasingpoliticalviolence,Gmezissettoworkasahitmanforthefarrightwingofthe
Peronistparty.EspsitofindsSandovalshotdeaduponarrivinghomeSandovalusedtopassthenightatthehouseofhis
coworker,duetoendlessargumentswithhiswifeabouthisdrinkproblems.Hepresumes,andimagines,thatSandoval
waskilledbyhitmensentafterhimself,perhapsunderRomano'sorders,andthatSandovalposedasEspsitoand
sacrificedhislifeforhisfriend.AbuddingromancebetweenBenjamnandIrenethelatterthenrecentlymarriediscut
shortbySandoval'sdeathandEspsito'sultimatedecisiontoexilehimselfdeepwithinthecountryside,withthehelpof
someofIrene'srelatives.Herethemoviemakesadefinitestopin1999.Aftercomingbackfromexilein1985,Espsito
returnedtoanuneventfulcareerinBuenosAiresuntilhisretirement.Hauntedbythepast,he'sdeterminedtowritedown
hisstoryinnovelform.HepresentstheframeworktoIrene,stillmarriedandwithchildren.Sheremainsresentfuland
hardenedfromtheirsuddendeparture24yearsearlier,andforapparentlyneverhavinghadherfeelingsreturnedbyhim.
EspsitodrivestoChivilcoytomeetMorales,thewidower,whohastakentoaquietlifeandgraduallyletgoofhis
obsessionwiththemurdercase.Espsitopromiseshimthathewillnotrestuntilhecanputtheconvictonceagaininjail.
AhesitantMoralesthenconfessestohavingkilledGmezmanyyearsago,havingkidnappedhimandshothiminthe
trunkofhiscar.AdisturbedEspsitoleaves,butuponthinkingovercertainfacts,secretlyreturnstoMorales'shouse.
Sneakinginside,heisshockedtofindthatMoraleshasamakeshiftcellinhishomeandthathehaskeptGmezchained
insideforover24yearsaspunishmentforhiswife'sdeath.Hekepthimalivebyfeedinghimandtendingtohim,butnot
oncein24yearstalkingtohimnorlettinghimout.MoralesrepeatswhathehadmantainedinfrontofEspsitobackto
1974:that,insteadofadeathsentence,hebelievestheboredomofameaninglesslifeinjailtobetruejustice.
Espsitoleaves.HepaysavisittoSandoval'sgrave.KnowingthatGmezwillneverbeafreemanagain,hefinally
comestotermswithhislife.HevisitsIreneonemoretime,wherehefinallyrespondstoherfeelings.Theirlove
rekindled,theysmilinglyshutthemselvesinheroffice.

Casablanca
IntheearlyyearsofWorldWarII,December1941,theMoroccancoastalcityofCasablancaattractspeoplefromallover
theworld,particularlyNazioccupiedEurope.ManyaretransientstryingtogetoutofEurope;afewarejusttryingto
makeabuck.Mostofthemgamblersandrefugees,Nazis,resistancefighters,andplainoldcrooksfindtheirwayto
Rick'sCafAmricain,aswanknightclubownedbyAmericanexpatriateRickBlaine(HumphreyBogart).Thoughwe
learnlaterthatRickonceharboredenoughidealismtoputhimselfatrisktofightfascism,he'snowembitteredand
cynical,professingtobeneutralanddetached:"Istickmyneckoutfornobody."
Ugarte(PeterLorre)comestoRick'swithlettersoftransitheobtainedbykillingtwoGermancouriers.Thepapersallow
thebearertotravelfreelyaroundGermancontrolledEurope,includingtoneutralLisbon,Portugal;fromLisbon,it's
relativelyeasytogettotheUnitedStates.TheyarealmostpricelesstoanyoftherefugeesstrandedinCasablanca.Ugarte
planstomakehisfortunebysellingthemtothehighestbidder,whoisduetoarriveattheclublaterthatnight.However,
beforetheexchangecantakeplace,UgarteisarrestedbythepoliceunderthecommandofCaptainLouisRenault(Claude
Rains).AcorruptVichyofficial,RenaultaccommodatestheNazis.UnknowntoRenaultandtheNazis,Ugartehadleft
theletterswithRickforsafekeeping,because"...somehow,justbecauseyoudespiseme,you'retheonlyoneItrust."
ThenthereasonforRick'sbitternessreentershislife.IlsaLund(IngridBergman)arriveswithherhusbandVictorLaszlo
(PaulHenreid)topurchasetheletters.LaszloisarenownedCzechResistanceleaderwhohasescapedfromaNazi
concentrationcamp.TheymusthavetheletterstoescapetoAmericatocontinuehiswork.AtthetimeIlsafirstmetand
fellinlovewithRickinParis,shebelievedherhusbandhadbeenkilled.Whenshediscoveredthathewasstillalive,she
leftRickabruptlywithoutexplanationandreturnedtoLaszlo,leavingRickfeelingbetrayed.Aftertheclubcloses,Ilsa
returnstotrytoexplain,butRickisdrunkandbitterlyrefusestolisten.
AtdifferenttimesRickandIlsatormentthemselvesbyaskingtheclub'spianoplayer,Sam(Arthur"Dooley"Wilson),to
playAsTimeGoesBy,asongtheylovedwhentheyweretogetherinParis.Thefamousline"Playitagain,Sam,"which
referstothissong,doesn'tactuallyappearinthemovieIlsasays"Playit,Sam,"andlater,Rickorders"Playit!"While
Samplaysthesong,RickreminiscesabouthisaffairwithIlsainParis.ThoughsheseemshappytobewithRick,her
moodneartheendoftheirtimetogetheriscautiousbecauseshehaslearnedherhusbandmaynotbedead.Whenthe
NazisbegintocloseinonParis,shereceiveswordthatVictorisindeedaliveinanotherpartofEurope.SheandRickhad
beenplanningtotakeatraintoSouthernFrancetoescapetheGermanArmy'sassault;however,ontheplatformRick
receivesahandwrittenletterfromher.Shewritesthatshecan'texplainwhyshe'sleavinghimbutsheloveshim.Rickand
Samleavewithouther.
Thenextnight,Laszlo,suspectingthatRickhastheletters,speakswithhimprivatelyaboutobtainingthem.They're
interruptedwhenagroupofNaziofficers,ledbyMajorStrasser(ConradVeidt),commandeerSam'spianoandbeginto

singDieWachtamRhein(TheWatchontheRhine),aGermanpatrioticsong.Infuriated,Laszloordersthehousebandto
playLaMarseillaiseinhonorofOccupiedFrance.ThebandleaderlookstoRickforguidance;henods.Laszlostarts
singing,aloneatfirst,thenlongsuppressedpatrioticfervorgripsthecrowdandeveryonejoinsin,drowningoutthe
Germans.Inretaliation,StrasserordersRenaulttoclosetheclub.
Laterthatnight,IlsaconfrontsRickinthedesertedcafe.Herefusestogiveherthedocuments,evenwhenthreatenedwith
agun.Sheisunabletoshoot,confessingthatshestillloveshim.RickdecidestohelpLaszlo,leadinghertobelievethat
shewillstaybehindwhenLaszloleaves.
Laszloisjailedonaminorcharge.RickconvincesRenaulttoreleaseLaszlo,promisingtosethimupforamuchmore
seriouscrime:possessionofthelettersoftransit.However,RickdoublecrossesRenault,forcinghimatgunpointtoassist
intheescape.Atthelastmoment,RickmakesIlsagetontheplanetoLisbonwithherhusband,tellingherthatshewould
regretitifshestayed:"Maybenottoday.Maybenottomorrow,butsoonandfortherestofyourlife."
MajorStrasserdrivesup,tippedoffbyRenault,butRickshootshimwhenhetriestointervene.Whenhismenarrive,
RenaultinformsthemthatStrasserisdeadandcoversforRickbysharplyorderingthemto"rounduptheusualsuspects."
HethenrecommendsthattheybothleaveCasablanca.Renault,suggestingtheyjointheResistance,walksintothefog

fairiesfranticallytrytoalertherasthePaleManjoltsawake,insertingtheeyeballsintosocketsinhispalms.Notseeing
this,OfeliaeatsanothergrapebeforesheturnstoseethePaleManapproachingher.Thefairiestrytodistractthecreature
buthegrabstwoofthemandeatsthem.Horrified,Ofeliarunswiththelastfairy.ThePaleManchasesOfeliadownthe
hallway.Inhorror,shenoticesthechalkeddoorwayclosingasthehourglassrunsout.However,Ofeliamanagestodraw

MercedesandFerreriomakeanotherdangerousvisittotherebelsinthewoods,bringingthemsuppliesfromthe

DoctorFerreirodeterminesthelegmustbeamputatedbeforegangrenespreadsbeyondit,andtakesontheunpleasanttask
intherebelhideout.
TheFaunrevisitsOfeliainherroomandshegiveshimthedagger,butadmitsthatsomethingwentwrongduringthe
secondtask.TheremainingfairyguideangrilywhispersintheFaun'sear,explainingOfelia'sdisobedience.He
admonishesherforherrecklessnessandtellsherthat,withthefullmoononlythreedaysaway,shemayneverprove
herselfworthyofreturningtoherkingdom.Hevanishes,leavingOfeliaaloneandinmisery.
Thenextday,loudcrashingsoundsareheardthoughthewoods.Vidalassembleshismenandtheyrushintothewoodsto
confrontwhattheyassumetobeattackingrebels,butdiscoveraderailedtrain,anapparentdecoymove,andnorebelsin
sight.Vidalreturnstothemilltofindthatthestoreroomismissingalargeamountofsupplies.Healsoseesthatthelock
isnotbrokenortamperedwith.ThisleadshimtosuspectMercedes,sinceshecarriestheonlykeytothestoreroom.He

Tartaspeakswithaheavystutter,Vidaltauntshimwithaproposition:ifTartacancounttothreewithoutstuttering,he
willbesetfree.Vidaladdresseshissecondincommand,Garcs(ManoloSolo),whoconfirmsVidal'spowertorelease
him.TartaattemptsVidal'schallenge,butfails.Vidalbeginsthetorture.

Asmartlydressedblondewomanwalksthroughthehospital,whistlingatune.Shefindsachangingroomandemerges

andsaysthathergiftistoallowhertodieinhersleep.Asshepreparestoinjectthecontentsofthesyringeintothe
Bride'sIVline,hermobilephonerings.ItisBill,whoordershertoabortthemissioninviewoftheBride'ssurvivalof
theirpreviouseffortstoassassinateher,andbecauseitwouldlowerthem.Elleisfurious,butdoesasorderedandleaves.
