Future Work

1. Motivation

Building on the work done in support of the review

of Australian Standard 3972 2010 General
purpose and blended cements.
Respond to community concerns regarding the
embodied emissions in concrete ( specifically CO2)
Maintain the competitiveness of concrete as a
building medium

Progress with enhancing the

sustainability of Australian cements.

A general industry response is given in the Cement

Industry Roadmap (2009) (WBCSD CSI)

2. Project

Foundation of a Working Group under auspices of

Standards Australia
Concrete industry representation cement
manufacturers, concrete manufacturers, engineers,
specifiers, academia
Representatives to report to constituency an seek
feedback
Project scope determine the optimum level of
mineral substitution in Type GP cement
Project timeline Aim for a green paper amendment of
AS 3972-2010 by December 2012

Progress with enhancing the

sustainability of Australian cements.

Stage 1
Scope:
Limestone levels - nominal 5%(Control), 7.5%, 10% and 12.5%
A production run at each of the limestone levels.
To be conducted at one or two plants by each cement manufacturer.
Expecting 5-6 sets of data.
Mortar:
Three grab samples for testing compressive strengths.
One sample tests of sulfate expansion, shrinkage and peak temperature rise.
Other tests at the discretion of the cement company would include the normal
suite of cement tests.
Concrete:
Standard concrete mix (32 MPa) by cement company.
Bleed rates.
Setting times.
Compressive strengths at 1, 3, 7, 28 and 56 days.
Drying shrinkage up to 56 days.
Water demand.
