highlight of this months focus on the

specialized transport sector of our
industry is the 10th Anniversary IC
Transport 50 ranking. The first T50, containing
25 companies, was in August 2005. It started in
the year that the IC50 for cranes, from where
the Transport 50 took its inspiration, was
already celebrating its own 10th Anniversary.
The top 10 companies in the inaugural T50
are all recognisable in this months table, three of them still in
the top 10. At the top of the table then, as it is now and has been
every year in between, is Mammoet. In the intervening 10 years
Mammoet has made a staggering addition of more than 100,000
tonnes of capacity to its fleet, up from a T50 Index figure of 72,800
to 180,900, or about a 150 % increase. ALE, then as now in second
place, has increased its T50 Index from 27,200 to 143,988 an
increase of well over 400 %. Not to be outdone, Sarens, the third
of the three originals in the top 10, has increased its capability by
closer to 500 %, from 18,000, up to just past the 100,000 mark,
at 101,951.
In 2014 we have again managed to increase the number of
companies in the T50, from 88 to 91, which could put the magic
100 in reach for next year. See this years story starting on page 15.
Coming up very soon now is the start of the industrys
conferences and exhibitions season for the second half of the year.
From our side we have the inaugural Cranes and Transport Asia
Pacific conference (CATAP) in Singapore, part of the three day
Singapore Crane Fair. For more details of this exciting series of
events see the feature on page 37. After that, also from KHL, is the
World Crane and Transport Summit in Florida, USA, on 12 and
13 November.
Before CATAP is the SC&RA Crane and Rigging Workshop
in the USA, and there is also the CICA annual conference in
Australia. Around the same time is the IAA commercial vehicle
show in Germany. At the end of November is the Bauma China
exhibition and rounding out the year is the BC India show in midDecember plenty of opportunities to help increase business.

Sales at Cargotec for the
first half of 2014 were up
3 % at 1.555 billion
(US$ 2.1 billion) from the
1.515 billion ($ 2.05 billion) in
the same period a year earlier.
For the most recent quarter,
however, sales were down 4 %
to 804 million ($ 1.09 billion)
from 836 million
($ 1.129 billion) in Q2 2013.
Operating profit for H1
2014 was 17.8 million
($ 24 million), down from
46.1 million ($ 62 million)
in H1 2013. This decrease
was attributed to project cost
overruns in the Kalmar port
crane and handling equipment
division. Cargotec includes the
Hiab, Kalmar and MacGregor
manufacturing businesses.

Initial ruling in Manitowoc

and Sany patent lawsuit
United States International
Trade Commission
Administrative Law Judge
David Shaw has issued an
initial determination that
Sany Heavy Industries
infringed patents owned by
Manitowoc Cranes.
The notice of Initial
Determination in Certain
Crawler Cranes and
Components Thereof (Inv.
No. 337-TA-887) was dated
11 July 2014. The investigation
is based on a complaint
filed by Manitowoc Cranes,
LLC, alleging violation of
Section 337 of the Tariff Act
by Respondents Sany Heavy
Industry Company and Sany
America in the importation
into the United States and

Sales at Kobelco Cranes were

up 47 % in the first quarter
of the fiscal year starting
1 April 2014, to JPY 16.9 billion
(US$ 164 million). The
divisions operating profit was
JPY 1.7 billion ($ 16.5 million).
The company said demand
was strong across all regions it
serves, adding that its domestic
Japanese market was given
a boost by increasing public
investments, among
other factors.

Pictured below is a new wind turbine component transport system,

the Tower Bridge, from the Netherlands. It is a different idea for
transporting wind turbine tower sections that involves hydraulic frames
and a crawler tractor. Look out for the full story in next months IC.

23 July 2014, Manitowoc

stated, Manitowoc is pleased
by the Judges favourable ruling
and looks forward to receiving
the Commissions final order
later this year. The notice
issued by the Judge released
only limited information.
The company will provide
additional information once
the public version of the
Final Initial Determination
is issued.
The complaint centres on
Manitowocs Variable Position
Counterweight (VPC) system,
which was first patented for
the companys Model 31000.
Manitowoc contends that
Sanys SCC8500 crawler crane
infringes on its patents related
to the VPC system.

Kobelco Cranes sales up 47%

cranes and components that

claims of US Patent Nos.
7,546,928 (the 928 patent)
and 7,967,158, and that were
designed and manufactured
using Manitowoc Cranes
misappropriated trade secrets.
According to the notice,
the judge determined Section
337 was violated. Specifically,
the judge determined that
Manitowoc demonstrated
that certain accused
products infringe claims
of the 928 patent, and
that Sany engaged in the
misappropriation of certain
asserted trade secrets owned
by Manitowoc.
In an announcement dated

This high growth in the first

quarter led the parent company,
Kobe Steel, to increase its
revenue and profit forecasts
for Kobelco Cranes for the full
fiscal year.
It now expects revenues of
JPY 76 billion ($ 740 million),
compared to the previous
forecast of JPY 73 billion
($ 710 million) and 2013s
actual figure of JPY 56.6 billion
($ 551 million). If this forecast
proves accurate, that would
represent a 34 % increase
in revenues.
Operating profits are now
expected to come in at
JPY 4 billion ($ 39 million),
compared to the previous
forecast of JPY 3.5 million
($ 34 million) and 2013s
figure of JPY 3.2 million
($ 31 million).
Although this would be a
25 % increase in profit, the
divisions margin would be
weaker. Last year operating
profits as a percentage of
revenues was 5.6 %. The
latest forecast puts this ration
at 5.3 %.

WORLD NEWS
PM FOR MANITEX

Manitex International in the

USA has agreed the acquisition
of Italian articulating crane and
aerial platform manufacturer
PM Group SpA for US$ 107
million. Cranes under the PM
brand and Oil & Steel branded
truck mounted aerial platforms
will join the Manitex lineup.
Manitex said that PM Group, its
largest acquisition to date, has
trailing twelve months revenue
of $106 million and an adjusted
EBITDA margin of about 9 %.
PM Group accumulated a
$140 million debt following
a 2008 LBO, which created
an opportunity for Manitex
to acquire the company and
restructure the debt, the US
company said. The acquisition
includes assumption of $68
million in debt and liabilities,
plus working capital facilities.
Also included is a $24 million
loan, and $15 million in new
Manitex shares, mainly to PMs
banks, Manitex said.

Terex Q2 revenues up 10%

Terexs sales for the second
quarter of the year were
US$ 2.06 billion, a 10.4 %
rise on the same period in
2013. The company made a
net profit of US$ 140 million
in the three-month period,
compared to just US$ 21
million a year ago.
Terex Chairman & CEO,
Ron DeFeo said, Our results
for the second quarter and first
six months of the year were
mixed both from a business
and geographical perspective.
Our Aerial Work Platforms
(AWP) segment had a strong
quarter but margins were
slightly lower than a year
ago due to product mix and
planned investments in new
product development and
manufacturing footprint.
Our Cranes segment is
making progress, as bookings
were roughly equal to net sales
during the quarter and the

Hewden adds cranes

to Core Fleet project
UK-based rental company
Hewden has extended its
Core Fleet Guarantee project
to include its three most
requested cranes.
Under the Core Fleet
project, Hewden said it
offered delivery within three
days on its most popular
products, including excavators,
telehandlers, site dumpers,
rollers, aerial platforms and

site accommodation.
Now, the company said,
it would also offer the Terex
AC 35, a 40 tonne capacity all
terrain crane, together with
the 50 tonne AC 50-1 and
the 80 tonne AC 80-2 all
terrains under this three-day
delivery initiative.
In addition to the Terex
models, other cranes will also
be offered, including new
Tadano machines.
Hewden said that if the
cranes were not delivered
on site within three days of
ordering, it would credit the
first three hours of rental back
to the customer.
Jeff Schofield, marketing
director, said, The Hewden
Core Fleet has been a real hit
with customers. It adds real
value because the offer is clear
and, critically, consistent.
Customers get the kit they
want, where they want it, on
time, in full. Our planning

order entry run rate was 12 %

above the prior year level on a
year to date basis.
Commenting on the
outlook, Mr DeFeo said, We
expect continued strength
from our AWP segment and
improvement from our Cranes
and MHPS segments to drive
improved performance for the
second half of 2014 compared
with the first six months.
While we see a slightly weaker
end-market than we originally

MILESTONE DELIVERY FOR LIEBHERR

Liebherr-Werk Ehingen in Germany has delivered its 30,000th mobile

crane, to crane and heavy load contractor Grupo DPH, based in Mexico.
The 500 tonne capacity LTM 1500-8.1 is also the 450th unit of this
model to be delivered around the world. Jorge Fernandez, owner of
Grupo DPH, said, Liebherr cranes have always had a good reputation
and since Liebherr has had its own location here in Mexico, I know
that I can rely on the companys excellent after-sales service for my
machines. That is why I decided on Liebherr.
The LTM 1500-8.1 was handed over in the port of Salina Cruz in
the south of Mexico and is being used to load wind turbine
generators at Grupo DPHs warehouse, which is acting as a
distribution centre for wind power plant manufacturer Vestas. The
turbines are being shipped to wind farms in Mexico and further afield
around Latin America.
The LTM 1500-8.1 joins a fleet of 25 cranes with load capacities of up
to 500 tonnes.

Kahl Schwerlast, main contractor for an upgrade project at

Duisburg Harbours in Germany, moved a 630 tonne Trimodal
gantry crane to the quayside to Logport 1 using two six-axle

PST/SL-E series. The self propelled transporter modules have
hydrostatic drive, electronic multi-way steering and a payload of
45 tonnes per axle line. To increase the payload, the two four-axle
modules were combined with three-axle THP heavy-duty modules.
The crane was 139 metres long, 20 m wide and 18 m high. It was
raised 300 mm and rotated 90 degrees using the modules, before
being repositioned on girders. Once in place, eight heavy-duty
cranes were used to lift the portal crane into its final position.

BUSINESS NEWS

Cranes buck the

trend once again
n first glance, the
performance of indexes
like the Dow and FTSE
100 dont look too worrying
for the month of July. Between
weeks 22 and 26 the Dow lost
1.71 % of its value and the
FTSE was down just 1.04 %.
No loss is good news, of
course, but these figures do
not look too alarming. The
issue, however, was the severity
of the drop as July came to
a close. Having gone above
17,000 points for the first time
in its history at the start of the
month, and more or less stayed
there, there was a sharp
317-point (nearly 2 %) drop
in a single day on 31 July.

as bad as it might have been.

Manufacturers like Manitowoc
and Terex may have seen heavy
falls, as did Palfinger, but all the
other companies that make up
the IC Share Index enjoyed net
gains between weeks 22 and 26.

Adding complexity
A complicating factor for
Manitowoc is that it has been
put under pressure from
an activist investor to split
its cranes and foodservice
divisions into separate entities.
The overall effect of these
competing forces was that the
IC Share Index moved up

the month. It was also up

some 27.75 % compared to a
year ago, which looks good
compared to the Dows much
more modest 6.46 % rise over
the same period.
So, having been left behind
in the 2013 stock market rally,
the crane sector looks like it
is finally reaping the benefits
of a strengthening global
economy. There are still a few
manufacturers that are behind
the curve most notably Sany
and Zoomlion, both of which
are down compared to a year
ago. On the whole, however,
the industry's shares are
seeing growth.

Below expectation

AUGUST IC SHARE INDEX

This was due to a range of

factors, including weaker than
expected half-year results from
some of Americas blue-chip
companies, escalating tensions
between Russia and the West,
and continuing solvency
problems at a major Portuguese
bank, Banco Espirito Santo.
The other point to make is
that after a five-month winning
streak, the market was due for a
correction. Stocks had arguably
become over-priced but,
inevitably after any long rally,
there will always come a point
when investors judge that a
peak has been reached and that
it is time to take profits.
In terms of the crane sector,
however, this was mostly a
US issue, and the impact on
the global industry was not

NEWS FEATURE

New SPMT guidelines

aim to boost safety
Radical new
guidelines for the
operation of self
propelled modular
transporter (SPMT)
are due to be
published in the
third quarter of
2014. GRAHAM
ANDERSON reports

oncerns regarding
accidents with self
propelled modular
transporter (SPMT) were
expressed at KHLs World
Crane and Transport
Summit in Amsterdam, the
Netherlands, back in 2011.
At the conference a number
of speakers pointed out that
some SPMT loads were tipping
over, even though the existing
operating rules and stability
calculations had been precisely
followed. Clients were asking
what the industry was going to
do about the problem.
In response, the European
Association of Abnormal
Road Transport and Mobile
Cranes (ESTA) created a
working group that included
representatives from several
of its leading members, plus
manufacturers and clients.
ESTA also commissioned
Dutch engineering consultancy
company Euro-Rigging
to develop a common
mathematical model that
could be used throughout the
industry and that would better
take into account the full range
of forces affecting an SPMT
and its load.
David Collett, ESTA

IC 08 2014 News feature SPMT.indd 13

president and managing

director at Collett & Sons in
the UK, said, We have been
working on this for a couple
of years now and it is really
challenging the way we have
done things in the past. It is
presenting us with a totally
new way of operating SPMTs.
We will see the final outcome
later this year.

Following guidelines
Collett said that up to now
accidents and near misses
have sometimes happened
even when the existing safety
guidelines have been followed.
When an accident happens
the fall-out can be monstrous,
Collett explained Of course,
there is the issue of personal
safety, and that is terrible. On
top of that, a whole project can
be threatened and the losses
can be huge.
At the same time, in some
markets an increasing amount
of work is being done by
SPMTs, they are becoming
the norm, and yet there are
no guidelines at all. Nothing
exists. Of course, the best
practice guide will not be able
to address every issue in every
circumstance, but it will be a

starting point, a baseline.

Senior lead engineer Andre
van der Steen, who is leading
the work for Euro-Rigging,
said that the key was to adopt
a full three-dimensional
approach, and to take into
account all of the forces
affecting SPMT stability.
This means paying particular
attention to the elasticity or
stiffness of the system and
the progressive effects of
trailer deformation.
Van der Steen said, The
most important stiffness is
the surface or the soil you are
driving on perhaps a roll-on,
roll-off ramp, for example.
The second is the stiffness of
the tyres. Roughly half of the
total stiffness is generated by
the stiffness of the tyres. Oil
and hydraulic pressures are
also important, along with
other forces such as external
wind loadings, of course.
So there are a great many
forces involved.
Van der Steen also added
that monitoring the complete
route to be taken was essential.
Speed can affect the capacity
of the trailer, and you can
decrease speed for areas of
softer soil, he said.

Van der Steen stressed that

although the work is based
on complex mathematical
models, the aim is to produce
simple guidelines that will
be practical and easy to use.
With an SPMT trailer there is
the same amount of elasticity
related variables as for a crane.
Yet there are currently no load
charts for trailers.
Much of this work might be
applicable to modular trailers
on the road, although speeds
are usually a lot higher and
more variable so, for now, the
group is just concentrating on
SPMT, van der Steen said.
David Collett concluded,
This is the most expensive
piece of work ESTA has ever
carried out and we want to
spread it as far and wide as
possible. This will change
the face of SPMT operations
in future.

this years table. After falling 22 places in
2013 from 20th to 42nd place it has made
some major improvements to its fleet
capacity, and has moved up another eight
places to 34. While it is still some way
off from its position in 2012, the signs
are encouraging.
Nabros Transport, based in India, has
also moved up from 47th place in 2013 to
39th. The company has a fleet capacity of

10,072 tonnes, 2,550 tonnes more than the

previous year. After almost doubling its
fleet capacity to 7,256 tonnes, UK crane
and transport company, Ainscough, has
moved up 11 places, to 57th.
Transport company Trans-United,
based in the USA, has moved up to just
outside the top 50, from 62nd place to 51st
after increasing its specialized transport
capacity by 60 %.

Despite the positive changes in the

table, a number of companies have moved
down. In some cases this is not due to
decreasing fleet capacities, but more so
because other companies have moved
up the list. Stiglich Transporte, for
example, has fallen four places to 50th,
despite increasing its total fleet capacity
from 7,748 tonnes to 8,262 tonnes. Outside
the top 50, NCSG Crane and Heavy Haul

SITE REPORT

The Waverley route

Transporting and installing
components for a new
concrete bridge was a
major part of a bid to
resurrect an historic
railway line in the UK.
DAVID WESTON reports

he 98 mile (104 km) twin track

railway line from Edinburgh to
Carlisle was constructed in two
stages by the North British Railway before
it became a part of the London North
Eastern Railway (L.N.E.R). The first
part opened in 1849 and the second in
1862. The line ran south from Edinburgh
though Midlothian and the Scottish
borders before heading for Carlisle. It was
named the Waverley route after the novels
of Sir Walter Scott.
This picturesque line was notable for
its steep gradients and stunning scenery
and it came as a great shock to many that
it was marked for closure in the 1967
Beeching railway cuts, a cost reduction
programme, which sparked a great deal
of protest.
On 5 January 1969 the last scheduled
passenger service used the Waverley line.
Towards the end of the year contractors
started to lift the tracks. Only parts of
the railway line that were used to carry
freight traffic survived the initial closures,
although these too fell into disuse in 1972.
The Waverley route was one of the first
railway lines in the country to be run as a

cargo as it travels along the UK motorway

One of the 107 tonne concrete beams that will be part of the new railway bridge

private venture and it was one of the first

attempts at preservation. It was hoped
that this would save the line from closure.
Following a long campaign to reinstate the
line in June 2006 the Waverley Railway
(Scotland) Act was passed by the Scottish
Parliament by 114 votes to one. The Act
meant that the line would be reopened
as far south as Tweedbank, just south of
Galashields. This was given Royal assent
in July 2006.
Following tendering processes (that
Specialized vehicles from GCS Johnson

have since been abandoned) the line

is now being built by Network Rail,
which appointed BAM Nuttall to build
the 30 mile (50 km) section. It has been
estimated that the total cost of the project
will be 350 million (US$ 500 million).

Bridge up
In February 2014 construction of a
bridge, the largest new structure on the
line, began. The rail bridge will span
Hardengreen roundabout, between
Eskbank and Newton Grange. It is the
longest bridge to have been built from
scratch for the new railway line and
constitutes the most significant milestone
in
i the lines construction to date.
The new bridge is made up
from
four 107 tonne concrete
f
beams
that were cast in Ireland
b
by
b Shay Murtagh Precast.
Transport
from Ireland to the
T
construction
site was provided
c
by
b J. B. Rawcliffe and G. C. S.
Johnson.
Challenges during the
J
transportation
of the beams
t
included
stormy weather and
i
cancellations
of the ferry from
c
Ireland
across the Irish Sea. The
I
conditions
delayed the transport
c
of the cargo by a day.
A weather window appeared and the
beams made the crossing in relatively
calm weather, and were delivered to site
on time. On arrival at the site a 1,200
tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1
wheeled mobile telescopic crane from
Mammoet was used to lift the bridge
beams into position. The project is due to
be completed in 2015.

SPECIALIZED TRANSPORT

Dual-lane transformer haul

for Crane Rental Corporation
ransport and lifting company
Crane Rental Corporation in the
USA transported a 163.2 tonne
transformer from a storage site to a
substation in central Florida.
At the storage site, the 5.3 metre high
transformer was loaded onto a custommade 24-axle dual-lane Trail King trailer
using 700 US ton (635 tonne) capacity
gantries. The Trail King trailer can be
extended from 3.6 to 6 m and has different
suspension beam, perimeter deck, dollies,
and bolster options, the company said.
The trailer was connected to a four-axle
T800 Kenworth tractor, bringing the total
weight of the transport to 317.5 tonnes.

MEGA BRIDGE MOVE FOR

GPEC IN GUANGDONG

Lifting and transport company Guangdong

LIFT Engineering Machinery (GPEC) helped
move a 3,200 tonne bridge section for the
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project in
Zhongshan, Guangdong Province.
The bridge was moved using 100 axle
lines of Tianjie S2.43 self-propelled modular
transporter (SPMT). GPEC was contracted by
Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry to transport
the 132.6 x 33.1 metre structure from the
fabrication facility yard to a barge, ready
for shipment.
Challenges on the project included a
short time frame of two hours, which had
to be met, due to tidal conditions. For the
roll-on process, the hydraulic compensation
stroke of approximately 700 mm of the
SPMT helped keep balance during the
roll-on process.
The support system is set to three
hydraulic groups according to cargo
weight, centre of gravity location and road
conditions, a spokesperson said, This
ensures a uniform axle load on rough
road while running. Besides, the barge is
equipped with pressurised cabin to outward
drainage to ensure the balance.

The 163 tonne transformer is transported

on a custom made dual-lane Trail King trailer

During the transport, the tractor and trailer

combination was accompanied by six police
and two civilian escorts.
On arrival at the substation, the
transformer was loaded onto a 12-line

Goldhofer self-propelled modular hydraulic

platform trailer. The transformer was
then moved through the site to its final
position, where it was offloaded using
700 ton (679 tonne) gantries.

Hegmann Transit
expands fleet with Doll
egmann Transit has expanded
its fleet with two new Panther
low loaders from German
manufacturer Doll.
The two 23.3 metres long semi-low
loaders are have an axle configuration of
1+4. They have a 1-axle dolly mounted
behind the gooseneck and are compatible
with 3-axle trucks, the manufacturer said.
The dolly has a friction-steered axle with

a steering angle of 30 degrees. In addition,

the trailer is fitted with 205/65 R17.5 tyres
to provide a loading height of 780 mm. The
loading height can be adjusted by -70 mm
to 245 mm.
Both semi-low loaders offer a payload
of 41 tonnes each with an axle load of
8 tonnes. In addition, the fifth-wheel load
can be changed hydraulically from 17.5 to
22.5 tonnes.

four modules for client Hyundai
Heavy Industry (HHI).
The modules were for SK Energys SK
FCC 1 revamp, a refinery expansion project
in South Korea. The cargo consisted of a
regenerator top head, a reactor top head,
a reactor chamber shell and a riser shell.
The largest cargo, the reactor top head, was
12.3 metres long, 11.8 m wide and 14.1 m
high and weighed 341 tonnes. The smallest
cargo was the reactor chamber shell, which
measured 4.2 m long, 4.2 m wide and
11.6 m high and weighed 25.1 tonnes.
The cargo was transported 15 km from
HHIs jetty to Ulsan New Port, South
Korea, by vessel, before being transported
by road for 5.1 km to the SK Energy job
site. For the road transport, obstacles,
including traffic lights, street lights and
trees, traffic signs and cables, were moved
prior to the transport. Road reinforcement
was also carried out as well as navigating a
bridge on route.
The road transport was completed
during the night, with four police escorts.

From Ulsan New Port the cargo

was transported by road for
5.1 km to the SK Energy site

The regenerator top head and the reactor

top head were each transported using
24 axle lines of Kamag 2406 HS4 E, with
two power pack units, while the reactor
chamber shell was transported on 12 axle

VAN DER VLIST IN CEMENT

FLOODING RESTORATION

Specialized transport service provider, Van

der Vlist, has transported a new cement kiln
to a cement factory in Lincolnshire, UK, after
equipment was damaged by floods.
The kiln was transported in two shell
sections, both of which were collected from
Magdeburg, Germany. The shell sections
had a diameter of 4 metres, with the largest
measuring 19.7 m long and the smallest
measuring 2 m long. The largest section
weighed 640 tonnes. To meet German road
regulations, a vessel bridge trailer was used
to transport the larger of the two sections
through the country.
Once outside Germany, the cargo was
transhipped onto an 8-axle semi-low bed
trailer. The smaller section was turned and
loaded onto a euro low loader, a company
spokesperson said. The pieces were then
sailed from Rotterdam to Killingholme port
in the UK.
On arrival the sections were transported
by road. Some of the roads along the route
were increasingly narrow, and a private
escort vehicle was used to guide the larger of
the two transports.

SPECIALIZED TRANSPORT

Record load out for Lift & Shift

L

ift & Shift Engineering Middle

East (LSEME), a joint venture
company from Lift & Shift India
and OHI group Oman, has completed the
transportation of 15,000 tonnes of cargo at
its fabrication yard in Sohar, Oman.
The cargo consisted of five offshore
decks and a bridge. The modules were to be
delivered to the ADMA site in Umm Lulu
and Umm Kaasar in Abu Dhabis offshore
field, a company spokesperson said.
The offshore decks weighed between
2,250 and 3,600 tonnes each. The smallest
deck measured 27 x 30 x 23 metres and
the largest measured 35 x 43 x 33 m. The
bridge measured 85 x 6 x 6 m and weighed
570 tonnes.
For the transport, LSEME used 152
lines of self propelled modular transporter
(SPMT), seven power pack units (PPU), 28
ballast pumps, four mooring winches two
400 class barges, one 300 class barge and a
280 class barge.
Preparations for the transports and load
outs included trailer arrangements, marine
analysis and a ballasting and loading plan
for the load out of the modules, a company
spokesperson added.
The first two load outs were of the
WHT 4 offshore deck, which measured
35 x 43 x 33 m and weighed 2,900 tonnes,
and the WHT 6 offshore deck, which
measured 47 x 27 x 37 m and weighed
3,600 tonnes. The load out was completed
on a 400 class barge.
WHT 4 was loaded out first using four
sets of SPMT and WHT 6 was moved

using five sets of axles of 148 SPMT lines

with seven power pack units (PPU). The
transport was carried out during the
evening, meaning extra lighting was needed
to safely complete the project.
The offshore decks were loaded onto
the SPMT, welded and lashed into position,
before being transported to the jetty. The
decks were then loaded onto the barge,
ready to be sailed to the Umm Lulu
Development Project, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
The second load out was for the MFT
deck and WHT 2 deck, which weighed
2,600 tonnes and 3,050 tonnes, respectively.
Four sets of 32 lines of SPMT were used to
transport the modules to the jetty, before
they were loaded onto a 400 class barge.

A total of four trailers in an 8-file

formation with 128 lines of SPMT was
utilised for the transport of MFT and WHT
2 decks the transport, a spokesperson
from LSEME said. The module was
transported over a distance of 1 km and
the trailer team was equipped with wireless
communication.
The final deck to be transported was
the WHT 1, which measured 27 x 30 x 23
m and weighed 2,250 tonnes. To move the
module 96 lines of SPMT in four files were
used. The deck was transported 1 km to a
jetty before being loaded out on a 330 class
barge. The final task of the project was to
move the bridge to the jetty, where it could
be loaded onto a 280 class barge.

Both WHT 4 and WHT 6 modules are

fixed onto the barge ready for sailing

Lampson maintains a fleet of rubber tyred
transporters ranging from conventional flatbed
models to self-propelled hydraulic levelling
platform trailers. These largest models are
capable of load movement in excess of 3,000
tonnes and include trailers from Goldhofer,
Scheuerle, Nicolas and Cometto

oads that need to be transported on
land keep getting bigger and heavier.
These super (size and weight) loads
tend to be modular components destined
for oil & gas and power generation sectors.
A spokesperson from Italian specialist
heavy transport service provider Fagioli
explains why, Most of the plants that
have been built during the last 20 years
are modularised, which means that huge
modules are fabricated mostly in one yard,
then transported directly to site and finally
assembled. These modules can weigh up
to thousands of tonnes and require special
trailers, ships or barges to deliver them.
Designing transport equipment to cope
with the immense weights and dimensions
of these modular pieces and incorporating
road infrastructure and regulations is

no easy feat. As a spokesperson from

Southwest Industrial Rigging explains, this
is because road regulations vary between
municipalities and jurisdictions from cityto-city and state-to-state.
For manufacturers, this means that
specialized transport needs to be adaptable
and flexible. Bruce Stemp, project manager
at Lampson International in the USA
explains, With restrictions constantly
being put in place by municipalities, trailers
operating within state and county lines
must quickly and easily adapt to a number
of different situations.

Custom models
With different restrictions being
implemented across the world,
manufacturers are providing end users
with a range of equipment. The latest
model of specialized transport for specialist
company Collett Transport from the UK,
for example, is a new custom 550 tonne
payload STB 550 side girder deck from
Scheuerle in Germany.
The hydraulically extendable STB 550
is the latest version in a series designed for
flexibility in its configuration. The deck
span range is from 29,200 to 34,200 mm
long. Loading width can be adjusted from
3,450 to 7,400 mm. The vertical lift of the
deck in the load area is 1,650 mm.
The girder deck includes design features
unique to Colletts specifications. It was

built with input from Nicolas in France.

David Collett, Collett Transport
managing director, said, The trailer will
be of great importance and interest to the
power generation and heavy engineering
industries. With this new higher level of
carrying capacity, currently unrivalled
in Europe, it will open the door for
manufacturers of generators, transformers
and steel castings, to increase the size and
weight of their product portfolio.
Trailer manufacturer Goldhofer has also
been tasked with providing a customised
trailer for UK company Allelys Heavy
Haulage. The Faktor 5 vessel bridge will
be used for transporting heavy loads,
including transformers, generators and
large industrial components.
This extremely efficient system offers
safe and reliable transportation for loads
of up 500 tonnes with a deadweight of 100
tonnes, the manufacturer said. The model
has a vertical lifting stroke of 1.8 metres, a
loading width from 3 to 6.75 m and loading
length is 11 to 17 m.
Also new from Goldhofer is a range of
heavy duty modular transporters and self
propelled modules, including the PST/ES-E
6 (315) and the PST/ES-E (285) modular
transporter and the Type THP/SL-S, THP/
SL-L and THP/SL heavy duty modules. The
models are designed for concentrated and
heavy-duty loads.

the market is a dual-lane TrailKing
transport trailer, which was designed for
USA-based Crane Rental Corporation. The
high-capacity trailer has telescoping axles
that extend from 3.6 to 6 m.
To meet demands set out by regulations,
Mammoet worked with manufacturer
Scheuerle to develop a hybrid power pack
unit (PPU) allowing emission-free and low
noise operation. Also new from Mammoet
is a concept for a nine axle Canadian
highway trailer. The trailer has a 100 tonne
capacity (80 tonnes at 12 m deck length),
a maximum gross weight of 280 tonnes, a
gooseneck suitable for 3- and 4-axle tractor
units, and an extended length of 30.5 m.
The model was designed by Mammoet
in co-operation with the Ministry of
Transportation (MOT) of British Columbia,
Victoria, Canada.
Also designed with regulations in mind
is the Panther trailer series from trailer
manufacturer Doll. A Doll spokesperson
says, The series features high payloads
of up to 110 tonnes, manoeuvrability, a
12 tonne axle load, a loading height of
850 mm, a total stroke of up to 405 mm
and a steering angle of 55 degrees. The
trailers have double wishbone technology.
From manufacturer Faymonville is the
CombiMax semi-trailer. Describing some
of the features, a spokesperson from the
company says, All steering systems can be
controlled by a newly developed gooseneck,
the One-Neck-Technology, regardless of
whether it involves vehicles with 4- or
8-tyred pendle [pendular] axles, vehicles
with knuckle-steering axles (hydraulic
or air suspension), or vehicles with
independent suspension from the
Twin Axle II series.

Customer satisfaction
To help meet customer demands, transport
service providers need to have a range
of equipment. Transport company
Van der Vlist, for example, has added new
equipment to its fleet, including a 10 axle
semi low trailer with a 3-axle modular
section and 7-axles. The difference with
this trailer is the combination of multiple
axles to take up to 100 tonnes, as well
as the lower height, a spokesperson from
Van der Vlist says. We have also invested
in extendible trailers tailored specifically to
wind turbine blades, able to take 36 tonnes.
Southwest Industrial Rigging in the
USA has expanded its fleet with 20 lines
of Goldhofer THP-DR and two STZ-H 9
semi low loaders. The transport provider
has also added two TK110HED low deck
trailers from Trail King.
For heavy transportation requirements,
Lampson International offers track
driven crawler transporters for hauling
heavy outsize loads in difficult terrain
and extreme environments. The

transporters have a patented Rolli-Flex

track roller suspension system and are
available in capacities from 400 to 4,000 US
tons (363 to 3,629 tonnes).
Transport company Tradelossa based in
Mexico, has recently acquired a new strand
jack system and Goldhofer extendable
flatbeds. We are trying to be one step
ahead of what is coming in the industry in
Mexico, a company spokesperson explains.
For the South African market, Rotran
Logistics Services, part of Eskom, based
in Johannesburg, South Africa, offers
almost five hundred axle lines and eight
girder beam trailers with capacities from
200 to 600 tonnes from manufacturers
including Nicolas, Cometto, Goldhofer
and Faymonville.
In Italy Fagioli purchased 50 axle
lines of modular trailers and some self
propelled modular transporters (SPMT).
Polish transport company ZTE Radom
offers a range of equipment for transport
and building works. Equipment includes
a range of modular platform trailers from
Kesselbrcken, Goldhofer and Broshuis.
For transport company Stiglich, the
busiest markets for moving oversize and
overweight loads are in the mining sector.
To meet demands throughout this sector,
Stiglich uses Goldhofer trailers, with
loading configurations from 10 up to 14
axle modular trailers.
New facilities are other ways to provide
customer support. Transport provider
Vanguard, for example, has recently
invested in a new facility in Richards Bay.
The depot has two SPMT trailers and
heavy load tools and accessories. Roland
Cumings, Vanguard specialised transport
and lifting senior manager, says, The
facility is proving to be a very valuable
and much needed asset to the heavy load
transport industry.

development.
LAURA HATTON reports
ompared to truck cranes and all
terrains, boom trucks can be a more
cost effective way to carry out a
lift. Jim Glazer from manufacturer Elliott
Equipment Company explains more, The
major advantages of a boom truck over
a truck crane is that the commercial truck
chassis is more comfortable, easier to
service and easier to resell than a
purpose-built carrier.
Ruben Olivas Saunders, Manitowoc
global product director of boom trucks
and carry deck cranes, adds, Another
advantage of a boom truck is that because
they are mounted on commercial truck
chassis, most often they comply with
highway travel rules.
The most recent model from Elliott
Equipment Company, for example, is the
45142. The 45 US ton (40 tonne) capacity
telescopic crane has a reach of 63.1 metres
and a lifting capacity of 40.8 tonnes at
2.1 m radius. It is fitted with a five section
43.3 m powered boom. There is also a
federal bridge-legal version of the 45142,
which is legal in all 50 US states, the
manufacturer adds.
Altecs latest offerings include the 45 ton
(40 tonne) capacity AC45-127S boom
truck, a new cab, and a new load moment
indicator (LMI). Altec has a customerfocused product development process,
says Matt Trefz, Altec Cranes, marketing
manager. When we began the 45 ton

project, customers told us they needed

more capacity beyond a 25 foot (7.6 m)
load radius, a solid feel at a 100 foot (30.4
m) load radius and road transport without
weight permits.
The AC45-127S is designed for
installation on a range of commercial
chassis. It has lower winch control, dual
entry cab and engine start and stop

functions at the tail shelf to minimise fall

hazards. The LMI reel is mounted at the
boom heel and protected by a metal cover,
while the anti-two block cable is routed
through the boom, which provides better
reliability. Altec also recently released a
patent pending Dual Entry Cab, available
on all riding seat models. In addition, Altec
also launched a new load moment and area
protection (LMAP) system, which monitors
crane operations.

new NBT60 has a 60 US ton (54.4 tonne)
capacity and a 39 m five-section,
full-power boom. A 13.7 m two-section,
off settable manual extension is also
available. The crane is roadable without
the need for additional permits in many
regions. It has two-piece, hydraulically
removable counterweight slabs that can
be stored on the front outrigger box,
CanBus outrigger controls and an X-shaped
footprint eliminate the need for a single
front outrigger, the manufacturer adds.
The new NBT15 models include the
14 ton (12.7 tonne) capacity NBT14, the
15 ton (13.4 tonne) NBT15 and the 16 ton
(14.5 tonne) NBT16. All three crane models
have an 18.3 m three-section boom. A
6.7 m single section jib is also available.

All three models have updated out and

down outriggers, which expand between
2.23 m and 5.28 m.
The latest boom truck from Palfinger
Sany is the SPC250 truck-mounted
telescopic crane (TMTC). The crane is
built on a commercial chassis and is the
first model in this range. Further models
with higher lifting capacity are planned
for later in 2014. The SPC250 has a lifting
capacity of 25 tonnes, a lifting moment
of 102.0 tonne-metres and a 32 m
telescopic boom. Optional extras include
an Arctic package, which will help the
crane to work in temperatures down to
minus 40 degrees Celsius.
From US crane manufacturer
QMC Hydraulic is the 50 ton (45 tonne)
8060R. It has a lift capacity of 30 tons
(27 tonnes) at 4.5 m and fits on an 8.4 m
wheel base chassis that only requires one
tag axle to be 50 states DOT legal. Payload
for tools and equipment is more than
2.7 tonnes, the manufacturer adds.
New from crane manufacturer Terex is
the Crossover 8000, which was launched
at ConExpo 2014. It has a proven X-pattern
outrigger design for extra stability, an
80 ton (72 tonne) rated capacity and a
38.4 m boom. When configured with a
17.3 m jib, maximum tip height is 57 m.
The Crossover 8000 is approved for
Freightliner, Kenworth and Western Star
commercial chassis.

Future shifts
Most manufacturers are keeping quiet as
to what new products are in development.
Demands for boom trucks are, however,
shifting towards the higher end of the
capacity scale. Matt Trefz explains, Boom
trucks are always getting bigger.
Certain work applications favour an
ever-increasing lifting capacity and this
pushes manufacturers to develop
larger models.

described in previous The
Knowledge articles, MARCO
VAN DAAL presents a case
study of a major moving
and lifting project

n this series of The Knowledge

articles, this is the first case study.
Originally these studies were intended
to be included at the end of the series of
technical articles but this project was so
unique and impressive it was decided to
not withhold it.
The project comprises the transport
of eight giant bullet tanks manufactured
in the European country of Belgium
and transported to Denmark where they
were placed on an unconventional sand
bed foundation.
Between the origin in Belgium and
destination in Denmark the bullet tanks
were transported from the factory onto a
barge by means of a roll-on roll-off (ro-ro)
operation. The barge sailed to Rotterdam
in the Netherlands where the bullets were
offloaded using a floating crane onto self
propelled modular transporter (SPMT)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Marco van Daal has

been in the heavy lift
and transport industry
since 1993. He
started at Mammoet
Transport from the
Netherlands and later
with Fagioli PSC from
Italy, both esteemed
companies and leading authorities in the
industry. His 20-year plus experience
extends to five continents and more than
55 countries. It resulted in a book The Art
of Heavy Transport, available at: www.khl.

that carried the bullets to a temporary

storage facility.
When the heavy lift vessel arrived
in Rotterdam, the bullets and two sets
of SPMT went to Denmark where the
transport over a 6.5 km route to their
final destination took place. Each bullet
was placed on a sand bed with the use of
two crawler cranes in tandem lifts. The
focus of this article is the transport in and
the lifting operation in Denmark. The
operation from Rotterdam to the final
destination in Denmark was undertaken by
Royal Wagenborg from the Netherlands.

About the tanks

These were not your average bullet tanks,
these were huge, not only in weight
(325.5 tonnes) but also in size. They were
38.5 metres long by 8.7 m wide and, loaded
on the SPMT, 12.6 m high.
With the bullet tanks Wagenborg had
to cross a town between the port and the
job site. This was as much of a challenge
as it was an opportunity to show how
well prepared the team was and how
professionally this part was executed. The
route was painstakingly analysed and every
traffic light, street light, road sign, tree and
any other obstruction was documented
and identified for (temporary) removal.
All eight bullets were transported through
town in sets of two on alternate days and,
with the assistance of the local authorities,
this went flawlessly and was every bit as
impressive as the lifting operation.

The transport
For the transport in Denmark, Wagenborg
opted for a double 16 axle line Scheuerle
SPMT with two power packs of 350 kW
each, which resulted in loads as follows:
TRANSPORTERS: 32 axle lines * 4 tonnes/
axle line + 2 PPU * 7.2 tonnes/PPU = 142.4
tonnes
BULLET TANKS: 325.5 tonnes
TOTAL WEIGHT: 467.9 tonnes
AXLE LINE LOAD: 467.9 tonnes / 32 axle
lines = 14.6 tonnes per axle line
Axle load:14.6 tonnes per axle line / 2 axles
= 7.31 tonnes / axle
With a maximum axle line load of
32 tonnes (including self weight) this put
the transporter at 14.6 tonnes / 32 tonnes =
52 % of its capacity in static condition (no
dynamic forces taken into account).
As for the ground pressure, always a
controversial topic, the shadow area below
the transporters was taken to determine
this. The total shadow area was as follows:
2 x SPMT x Length x Width = 2 x (16 x 1.4 m)
x 2.43 = 108.86 square metres.
Ground pressure = total weight / shadow
area = 467.9 / 108.86 = 4.30 tonnes per
square metre.
The use of a double wide SPMT
combination ensured transverse hydraulic
stability angles of 11.9 degrees and
transverse structural stability angles of

THE KNOWLEDGE
Wagenborg made full use of the
SPMT suspension travel to help
offset the effect of a 10 % incline

bracket. The prime mover, capable of

generating an additional 16 tonnes of raw
pulling force gave that sense of security
that the client appreciated.
An operational detail during the climb,
as shown in the pictures, was that the
transporter deck was lowered at the front
and raised at the rear to offset some of the
10 % incline.

The lift

12.2 degrees, sufficient to carry out the

transport in a safe manner.
Once the transport reached the site
location the gross vehicle weight (GVW),
comprising the transporters and the
bullets, of 467.9 tonnes embarked on the
last challenge, a 10 % slope leading up
to the final resting place of the bullets.
Wagenborgs engineers determined that
for this last stretch a tractive effort was
required as follows:

axle lines and 2 x 4 axle lines, making 32

axle lines in total. Each 4-axle line unit and
each 6-axle line unit comes with 4 drive
axles, for a total of 24 driven axles on this
transport combination.
With an average traction of 5 to
5.5 tonnes per axle, a conservative total
of 24 * 5 = 120 tonnes of tractive effort
was available, which was more than
sufficient for this climb.

GVW * (rolling resistance + incline) = 467.9 *

(4% + 10%) = 65.5 tonnes

The required power pack unit (PPU)

capacity is often a subject of debate;
driving, steering and pumping can all take
place at the same time and all draw power
from the PPU. In addition, a slipping axle
(for whatever reason) takes a large portion
of the PPU power. As a safe rule of thumb
it can be stated that every 10 axle lines
require approximately 75 kW. With
32 axle lines this transport would require
a minimum of 240 kW.
The actual combination used two
PPUs of 350 kW each, again more than
sufficient for its purpose. Nothing was
left to chance, however. As part of the risk
analysis Wagenborg assumed a worst case
scenario where one PPU would fail and the
10 % climb would have to be made with
one PPU. Theoretically, even one PPU of
350 kW would be able to complete this
transport but to be absolutely certain that
this incline would be completed all eight
times without any hiccups, a prime mover
was attached to the front of the SPMT
using a sling and a specially fabricated

Note: the rolling resistance on a flat and

dry asphalt road measures approximately
3 %. The site road was a well compacted
sand road, but a sand road nevertheless, so
an increased conservative rolling resistance
of 4 % was assumed.
The Scheuerle SPMT used was 4 x 6

Power capacity

For the lifts of the eight bullets Wagenborg

mobilised two of its largest lattice boom
crawler cranes to Denmark along with all
the required rigging and a boat load of
crane mats. They were a 400 tonne capacity
Liebherr LR 1400 and a 350 tonne capacity
(Terex) Demag CC 2200, both equipped
with main boom and superlift ballast.
The CC 2200 was set to a lift radius of
19 m, which gave a capacity of 188 tonnes
or 69.6 % of the chart once the superlift
tray was lifted off the ground. The Liebherr
lifted its end of the bullets at 20 m radius,
which gave it a capacity of 177 tonnes or
72.1 % of its chart once the superlift tray
was floating. Combined capacity was
188 plus 177 = 365 tonnes to lift the
301.5 tonne (325.5 minus two saddles of
12 tonnes each) bullets, plus hook block
and rigging.
For the lift operation itself the
bullets were manoeuvred in front of the
foundation where the rigging was attached.
The bullets were belly slung with nylon
Wagenborg Liebherr LR 1400,
in the foreground, and (Terex)
Demag CC 2200 lattice boom
crawlers, placing one of the eight
bullet tanks on its unconventional
sand foundation

belts to facilitate a quick turnaround.
The rigging layout was cleverly designed
in such a way that it could all be hooked
up and attached at ground level without
the cumbersome use of man baskets
or man lifts.
The bullets were then lifted from their
saddles to sufficient height to clear the
foundations and sand beds and both cranes
walked to the far end of the sand bed
foundation to lower the first bullet in its
final place.
The carefully laid out crane mats,
hundreds of them, ensured that the ground
pressure imposed by the cranes never
exceeded 10 tonnes per square metre.
Worth mentioning is the fact that
the operator in the Demag crane was
performing the lift blind as he was working
from behind a foundation wall that
completely blocked his view. Dry runs
and clear communication with agreed
terminology made even this part of the
project go smoothly. At a rate of two
bullets a day, this part of the project was
completed in just four days.

Smart thinking
To make this project a bit easier to
execute, the engineering and fabrication
departments at Wagenborg worked
together and designed some add-ons on
for the transporters. First, they designed
a fold-up platform for the PPUs. This
allows the operator to stand on it during

transportation but, in tight turns, he can

step off the platform, fold it up (without
taking it off) and continue the transport.
The other clever thing they came up
with was a mini superlift tray. You might
think that this is nothing out of the
ordinary but it is more the application than
the manufacturing. This mini superlift tray
is yet another sign of how well prepared
this project was.
Once the bullets were set down, the
superlift tray also sat on the ground. It
would take multiple trips back and forth
to bring all superlift ballast back to its
origin. The mini superlift tray was part
of the original superlift tray during the
lifting operation. When the bullet
was disconnected, the crane rotated
180 degrees and picked up the mini
superlift tray from the original superlift
tray. With 100 tonnes of the total of
190 tonnes, the crane once again rotated
180 degrees back and connected the
original superlift tray. Now that the crane
carried 100 tonnes in its main hook, it
could boom down sufficiently to let the
original superlift tray float and the entire
superlift arrangement was taken to its
origin in one shot. A well planned and
well executed project.

he three-day crane Singapore

Crane Fair, being held on 28
to 30 September 2014, will be
a great regional focal point for the
crane and transport industry. Its target
visitors and attendees include all levels
of crane industry employees, their
families, managers and owners of crane
companies, contractors, distributors, and
representatives from regulatory authorities.
The event starts with the Crane Carnival
on Sunday 28 September, continues with a
half-day Singapore-focused Crane Safety
Symposium on Monday 29th and then
concludes with the international CATAP
conference on Tuesday 30th. The three-day
event is a joint effort organised by several
organisations, including the Singapore
Cranes Association (SCA), the Singapore
Contractors Association Ltd (SCAL), the
Workplace Safety and Health Council
(WSH Council), International Cranes and
Specialized Transport and its publisher
KHL Group, and Singapores Ministry of
Manpower (MoM).
The Singapore Crane Fair starts on
the Sunday with the Crane Carnival, at
Singapores Institute of Technology. It is
being organised by the SCA and SCAL.
First held in 2013, the day is for Singapore
crane industry professionals, their families,
jobseekers and students. It aims to increase
awareness of the crane sector, showcase the
industrys approach to health and safety,
and help communicate the high level of
responsibility and professionalism required
to be a successful operator. The Carnival,
which has the support of MoM and WSH
Council (National Crane Safety) Taskforce,
aims to promote the crane industry and
help create a competent workforce.

Speaking about last years event, a

WSH Council spokesperson said, The
inaugural Carnival attracted over 800
participants, comprising industry players,
their families and the public. Participants
were treated to a series of fun-filled
activities including crane demonstrations,
hands-on workshops, as well as mobile and
tower crane skills challenges. The activities
were designed to educate participants on
workplace safety and health in the crane
industry while injecting excitement and
fun elements.
On the Monday is the Crane Safety
Symposium, an annual event organised by
the WSH Council in collaboration with the
MoM. It is a specialist conference looking
at crane safety issues in Singapore and
targets management-level personnel from
crane owner companies, suppliers and
manufacturers, crane users and contractors.
The Crane Safety Symposium aims to
raise awareness amongst crane stakeholders
on the importance of crane safety and at
the same time showcase the latest crane
developments within Singapore to the
industry, a spokesperson said. Both the
Crane Carnival and the Crane Safety
Symposium are free to attend.
The final element of the Singapore
Crane Fair is the International Cranes and
Transport Asia Pacific (CATAP) conference
on Tuesday 30 September, organised
by International Cranes and Specialized

ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS

Working towards
a greener future
From the manufacturing
process to making
equipment more
recyclable, manufacturers
are reducing the impact
their products have
on the environment.
LAURA HATTON reports
ith increasing focus on reducing
the environmental impact
of manufacturing processes,
manufacturers are putting in a lot of time,
effort and resources to achieve it.
Crane manufacturer Hiab, for example,
follows the ISO14001 management system
during manufacturing procedures. A
spokesperson from Hiab explains, In
our new multi assembly unit in Stargard,
Poland we have a neutral energy system.
We also use solvent free paint and
recycled plastics.
To keep the environmental impact of
manufacturing down, crane manufacturer
Liebherr-Werk Biberach in Germany
is a partner of the Blue Competence
sustainability initiative, run by the
Verein Deutscher Maschinen- und
Anlagenbaus e.V. VDMA. To protect
the climate and environment
Liebherr has material collection
containers and materials are
sent for recycling and reused.
The company also has
a photovoltaic power
plant measuring on
its factory roof. In
addition,

Manitowocs manufacturing plant in Niella Tanaro is the companys global benchmark for
lean manufacturing. It was the first site to introduce lean principles, which now affect every
aspect of the production line

all machining equipment in the

Biberach production plant is placed
on foundations with double seals to
prevent contamination of the soil and
ground water.
The Liebherr-Werk Nenzing
(LWN) factory in Austria is
located in a water protection area,
which adds even more pressure
on the manufacturer. LWN has
fully automated the fabrication of
crawler crane boom sections, a
company spokesperson says. We
also use water based paint, 700
watt lamps, natural gas and the
steel used can be recycled.
Crane manufacturer
Manitowoc has also been focusing
on its environmental impact. The
Manitowoc manufacturing plant in
Niella Tanaro, Italy, is the benchmark
for the companys lean manufacturing
capabilities. At the Manitowoc facility
in Wisconsin, USA, the company
has reduced the amount of time
required for crane assembly. A

Manitowoc spokesperson says, We reduce

the run time of plant air compressors to
conserve electricity and weve upgraded
our lighting and improved heating
equipment efficiency.

The Liebherr Pactronic system is

an additional energy storage device
(accumulator), which is charged by
recuperation of reverse power and by
the surplus power of the diesel engine

08/08/2014 12:23:14

ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS
Crane manufacturer Palfinger has an
environmental team to work on issues
such as energy consumption, hazardous
waste and waste cuttings. In Western
Europe, for example, the roof of our site
in Guima, France was converted into a
solar roof, a Palfinger spokesperson says.
In Niagara Falls, Canada, the efficiency
of the lighting system was enhanced. In
Council Bluffs USA a reverse osmosis
system was installed to lower the sites
water consumption by approximately 30 %
compared to the level recorded in 2009.

Team effort
Reducing the environmental impact that
cranes have once in operation is another
area that manufacturers are striving for.
Tadano in Japan, for example, offers the
Cargo Crane Zest Prime Eco series, which
has an eco pump and eco winch that
reduces engine speed by 60 %, fuel
consumption by 45 %, and noise by
8 dB compared to the ZR series, the
manufacturer said.
The eco winch reduces the flow
volume of hydraulic oil and controls the
temperature increase of hydraulic oil
by controlling the speed of the winch
automatically, depending on lifting load,
a spokesperson from Tadano explains.
During the light weight lifting, the winch
keeps a current speed and reduces the
speed to a safe level during heavy lifting.
To help reduce its carbon footprint,
Hiab worked with Volvo on a solution
for an electrically driven pump. We also
provide solutions for variable pumps to
reduce the diesel consumption of the
carrier during operations, a spokesperson
from Hiab adds.
To reduce carbon dioxide emissions,
Liebherr offers a hybrid drive named
Pactronic for some of its duty cycle cranes.

SINCE 1945 LEADER IN PICK & CARRY

Palfinger sites in Europe use solvent-free paints

The Pactronic is an additional energy

storage device (accumulator), which is
charged by recuperation of reverse power
and by the surplus power of the diesel
engine. The energy, which is stored as
a compressed gas, can be released upon
demand and provides additional power
for the drive system, a spokesperson adds.
In addition, Liebherr also offers the Eco
Control system.
Technology is also playing a part
in helping manufacturers reduce the
impact that its cranes are having on the
environment when in operation. Palfinger
cranes, for example, have a load sensing
system to recognise how much lifting
power is required; the system then adjusts
the pumping and engine performance.

Power options
End users are also continually looking
at ways to reduce their environmental
impact. GGR, for example, stocks a
range of zero emissions battery powered
compact cranes and machines with
alternative power options. GGRs
standard Unic mini cranes can be supplied
with an electric or liquefied petroleum
gas (LPG) power option, a company
spokesperson says. The cranes are
also compact enough to be stored and
re-charged on site when hired for more
than one day.
GGR also offers customers filtration
systems, which can be fitted to the cranes
diesel engine exhaust. Three types of
diesel particulate filters are available;
the portable scrubber, compact scrubber
and crane mounted scrubber. These
scrubbers offer up to 99 % reduction
of particulate matter emissions and are
approved by the VERT association, a
non profit organisation that aims to
establish the best available technology
for combustion engine exhaust emission
control, a company spokesperson adds.

SC&RA COMMENT

COMMENT

Joel M Dandrea

A reason to stay
As our industry and the marketplace becomes ever
more competitive, the reality that we will eventually
lose high-value employees, whether were ready for it or
not, remains inevitable. Most of us are familiar with the scenario:
a key staff member makes the announcement that, after much
consideration, and even soul searching, theyve decided to pursue
another opportunity often taking a similar role within the
industry, perhaps with a client or a competitor.
Within this predicament a realisation often occurs: could you
have given this employee a greater reason to stay?
Some leaders pave the way for their employees to do their
best work while others complicate the process and make things
much more difficult than they have to be. According to a
Strategy+Business survey published in November 2013, 51 %
of employees from more than 250 companies in 37 countries
revealed a tendency to believe that their leadership was often in
the way of their success serving as much more of an obstacle
to it than an enabler of it. This group also believed that company
initiatives tended to succeed not because of their leaders but
despite them. Isnt exactly a recipe for keeping top talent is it?
That said it stands to reason that most company leaders arent
arriving at work every day with the intention of stifling progress.
But what can occur over time with bosses, especially within
companies that are moving along steadily, is the hindrance
trap a loosely based assumption whereby leaders see the success
of their teams as a direct reflection of their great leadership.
Within this trap, an organisation and, often many of the people in
important positions there, ends up settling for less over the long
run instead of remaining engaged, progressive and proactive
(traits associated with self-aware leaders).
Successful leaders can sidestep the hindrance trap and,

potentially, avoid the loss of high-value employees because of it,

by providing effective employee feedback. Such interaction can
inspire, uplift, and motivate both parties, while a poor effort can
do the opposite. The fundamental belief behind giving quality
feedback is that the experience should make everyone involved
better by following some simple rules:
Timeliness: As soon as possible after a meeting, situation,
or event has taken place, try to provide some type of relevant
feedback to the proper people. Allowing time and distance to
build up after this opportunity usually results in the loss of
valuable insights, as well as the ability to interpret those insights.
Preparation: Get your head right before you schedule time
for feedback. If your emotions arent in check, then your feedback
will miss the point and do more harm than good. And if youre ill
prepared on the topic, the results will unfold equally.
Listen: Your staff needs to know theyve been heard. Allow
them a chance to speak, and make an effort to consider what
theyre saying. Dont sit there waiting to talk. Make an effort to
hear what theyre saying.
Return the favour: Ask them for their own feedback. Offer
your employees the opportunity to participate in this process
from a strategic standpoint. Give them credit for quality ideas
and perspectives and ask them what they think can be done to
improve both their own effectiveness, as well as the companys.
Begin and end with a smile: Try to start off the meeting
with something positive youve observed or considered. This
breaks the ice, eases the mood, and balances out any negative or
defensive feelings the recipient may have during the exchange.
Similarly, try to wrap things up on a positive note. Express
confidence in this person and faith in the process
moving forward.

SC&RA NEWS

Helping to fund education for people who want to pursue a career in the
lifting and specialized transport industry is a core function of the SC&R
Foundation. MIKE CHALMERS reports

Celebrating the 20142015 SC&R Foundation Awards are, from left to right: Robert Moore, NBIS; Erika Davis (the TNT Crane &
Rigging Continuing Education Grant); Samson Meyer (the NBIS Continuing Education Scholarship); Steven McLean (the George
Bragg Memorial Scholarship); and Ron Montgomery (Intermountain Rigging and Heavy Haul), current SC&RA chairman.

SC&R Foundation winners

s a true testament of the dedication
to both the present and the future of
this industry, the SC&R Foundation
has awarded $26,000 for 20142015
in the form of three grants and seven
scholarships. The scholarships totalled
$21,000 to seven students preparing for
industry-related careers, and the grants
totalled $5,000 to three employees at
SC&RA member companies wishing to
pursue continuing education. An additional
$25,000 in grants will be available in the
second half of 2014.
Since 1986 the SC&R Foundation has
proudly awarded more than $380,000 in
grants and scholarships to students and
SC&RA member company employees
around the world preparing for careers
related to crane, rigging, and specialized
transportation. Scholarships are awarded
to students working toward undergraduate
or graduate degrees, and awards are $3,000
each. Grants are awarded to recipients who
would like to take a continuing education
course or attend a vocational or technical
college. Awards can reach $5,000.
To be eligible for a scholarship, the
recipient must be the child, grandchild,
or spouse of someone working with an
SC&RA member company or simply
be an employee with the intention of
furthering their career in the industry.
Grant recipient eligibility, however, is open
to the public, and relatives of member

company employees, as well as anyone

looking to pursue a career in the crane,
rigging, and specialized transportation
industry are eligible, and encouraged, to
apply. Four-year and graduate students are
not eligible for a grant but are certainly
encouraged to apply for a scholarship.

Further afield
A recent international award winner
was Tanner Prince of Vancouver, British
Columbia, Canada. Prince was an SC&R
Scholarship winner in 2011. He was
a student at Grant MacEwan University
in Alberta at the time, and his father
worked for Weldco-Beales Manufacturing
in Edmonton as a general manager. He
used his $3,500 Foundation Scholarship
to help finance a Bachelor of Commerce
degree in International Business from
the University of Alberta, and now
works in the construction industry for
Leavitt Machinery in Edmonton. Leavitt
specializes in material handling equipment:
forklifts, telehandlers, man lifts, boom
lifts, scissor lifts, reach stackers and more.
Tanner also speaks fluent Mandarin
Chinese, and lived in Taiwan for two
years while participating in a China Study
Tour. He now lives in Vancouver, where
he enjoys entrepreneurship, dirt biking,
car mechanics, camping, and road tripping
with his wife and children.
The SC&R Scholarship and Grant

Awards continue to create opportunities for

people around the world, and symbolise the
benefit of SC&RA affiliation for people like
Tanner, who are looking to advance their
futures with a career in specialized crane,
rigging, and transportation. Recipients of
these honours have a chance to return to
this industry and add to both its growth
and its longevity. In this way, the SC&R
Foundation secures a more viable future
for all of the SC&RAs many valued global
members by creating inroads for the next
generation of industry leaders.

Backsense radar
from Brigade
Brigade Electronics has
launched a new radar
obstacle detection system
in the Backsense series, for
warning drivers of people
or obstructions behind large
reversing vehicles.
The system works by
dividing detection areas
into five zones. A visual and
audible warning then alerts the
operator when objects enter the
hazard area, the manufacturer
said. To prevent false alerts,
the spread of the radar beam
pattern can be restricted.
The display is made up of
a visual warning system, with
five LEDs, each representing

the five detection zones. The

audio warning is a buzzer with
an adjustable sound level of
65 to 90 dB. In addition, the
sensor can be used in harsh
environmental conditions, the
manufacturer said.
Four models of the system

are now available, including the

BS-8000, which has a detection
area from 3 to 30 metres long,
with a width between 2 and 10
