RFA: Urban Waste Management & Research Center (1998)
Research Category: Targeted Research

Description:
Objective:

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCL) are products that have been used selectively in some barrier
systems for landfills, surface impoundments, and other liquid/solid waste-retaining facilities.
Although some research has been conducted, many unexplored questions remain regarding
their usefulness, dependability, and behavior under field conditions. The objective of this
study is to review the influence of various flow and strength parameters of the GCL.
Specifically, the investigation includes the following tasks:
1) an investigation of the permeability characteristics of GCL's using recognized (ASTM
D5084) and alternate laboratory methods;
2) determination of interfacial shear strength for the different GCL types in contact with
geosynthetic materials; and
3) development of numerical models for alternate liner systems employing a geosynthetic
drainage layer, geomembranes, and GCL's.
The literature review has been completed and will be submitted as an interim report to the
Center. Pilot tests are being conducted to investigate the permeability charactertistics of
GCL's. The GCL manufacturers have been contacted and will be supplying the samples for
laboratory and large-scale testing under items 1 and 2 above.
