Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Computer Studies is a study about programming languages. There are

some course that is studying programming languages. There is Computer
Science and Information Technology. But when we analyze/ think what is the
difference between were confused. Lets say Computer Science is a general
while Information Technology has a major like Web and Database.
Being a programmer is not easy. It is a complicated job with a
complicated mind. Sometimes, being a programmer often mistaken for being
nerd because they should think deeper than usual.
In making a program there are lots of basis and factors affecting the
programmer before starting the program. You need a lot of guts and a critical
mind before doing it. You also need confidence and a positive outlook that you
can make and do a good job.

Background of Study
The study is focused in making a program which is very important
because it is the major job of a computer studies graduate.
This study is conducted to determine the level of competency of a 3rd
year computer studies students. The finding of this study would also serve as a
guide in evaluating the respondents level of competency in programming
language.
Later on you will know if the students would be a good programmer.

Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship and difference between the
programming assessment competency based on their self-evaluation and their
instructor/professor.

Scope and Delimitation

The study gives importance and emphasis in making a program
related to the performance of 3rd year college of Computer Studies students of
Pamantasan ng Cabuyao.
Our respondents involved 24 students of Computer Studies enrolled in
first semester 2014-2015.
The study uses questioners, and we manually compute the average or
the level of the programming analysis of the respondents.

Significance of the Study

This study is focused on the level of competency of respondents in
making a program, which is significant to the following:

Pamantasan ng Cabuyao
COLLEGE OF COMPUTER STUDIES
Computer Studies Education, comprising theoretical and practical
training provided to programmers to prepare them for their duties in making
a program. Programming education also provides post qualification courses
in special subjects within the programming education. However this study
helps the programmers for information and ideas regarding evaluation of
competencies of their students and to promote quality programming
education that prepares the students in ever-changing environment.

School Administration, as part of educational institution, providing

education and training nature of programming education and programming
qualification varies considerably across the world.
Students, hopefully this study will help the programmers or it will be
their stepping stone for improvement. They will be able to determine the
extent to which their competency may be improve which includes appropriate
knowledge and skills to successfully prepare for their related learning
experience and to enhance their skills in making a program.

Definition of Terms
1. Programmer. The person making the program.
2. Programming Language. Is a formal constructed language
designed to communicate instructions to a machine, particularly a
computer.

Pamantasan ng Cabuyao
COLLEGE OF COMPUTER STUDIES
There are a lot of programming languages. But here are some languages that
is common:
1. C++. Is a general purpose programming. It has imperative,
object-oriented and generic programming features, while also
providing the facilities for low level memory manipulation.

2. Java Script. Is a dynamic computer programming-language. It

is smaller than java, with a simplified set of commands, easier
to code and doesnt have to be compiled.
3. Visual Basic. Was derived from BASIC and enables the rapid
application development (RAD) of graphical user interface
(GUI) applications, access to database using Data Access
Objects, Remote Data Objects, or Active X Data Objects, and
creation of Active X controls and objects.
4. PHP. Uses a runtime interpreter, and is a multi-paradigm
language originally developed in 1996 by Rasmus Lerdorf to
create dynamic web pages.
5. Net Beans. Is an integrated development environment (IDE) for
developing primarily with Java but also with other languages,
in particular platform framework for Java desktop applications
and others.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter presents insights from other literature done by foreign
authors, which have connection with what the researcher are presenting this
study.

Related Literature
The occupational competency movement was initiated by David

McClelland in 1960s with a view to moving away from traditional attempts

to describe competency in terms of knowledge, skills, and attitude and
focused instead on the specific self-image, values, traits, and motive
disposition (i.e. relatively enduring characteristic of people) that are found to
consistently distinguish from typical performance in a given job or role.
On the other hand, Allan Perlis says A language that doesnt affect
the way you think about programming, is not worth knowing.

Pamantasan ng Cabuyao

In addition to this Eric Raymond (American programmer, author of
The Cathedral and The Bazaar) says computer science education cannot
make anybody an expert programmer, any more than studying brushes and
pigment can make somebody an expert painter.

Chapter 3
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATION
This chapter highlights the summary, conclusion and recommendation
of the study.

Summary of Findings
The main objective of the study is to determine the level of competency
of a 3rd year computer studies students of Pamantasan ng Cabuyao in making
program.
Descriptive method was used in conducting the study were the
structured questionnaire was given in 24 respondents.
The findings of our survey results 18 out of 24 students find
programming language a hard subject. They often used notes in making a
program. It is hard for them to encode a program that is given by their

Pamantasan ng Cabuyao
COLLEGE OF COMPUTER STUDIES
professor. And for them, since they were in first year, they find
making/encoding a program really hard.

Conclusion
After conducting this study, we therefore conclude that the level of
competency of a 3rd year computer studies students of Pamantasan ng
Cabuyao is very poor.

Recommendation
Based on the findings and conclusion cited, the following
recommendation were established.
1. More logic subject to enhance the logic skills of the students.
2. The professor must be more strict in making a program, so that the
student be oblige to study more.
3. More tutorial for students.
