Rhetorical Analysis
Rhetorical analysis involves analysis of an article, dissertation, or book. This essay seeks to
analyze an article More Sex, Anyone by columnist Dick Cavette. It examines the subject and theme,
purpose of the article, audience, persona, authoritative testimony, and analogy.
In his article, Cavett opens up on the subject of sex education. He implies that sex education has
been avoided in parents and teachers because of the assumption that discussion on sex should not exist.
He explains that the world today is more informed on sex and the practice of sex before marriage is
approved by majority of the people. He also includes the majority of people still preach and advocate
abstinence yet it would be better to discuss on the issue of sex to enlighten more young people. He
advocates more sex education in schools and homes. He explains the subject of sex before marriage by
giving his own testimony and how failure to educate the youth on the matter of sex made them nave.
The purpose of the article is to educate people on the need for sex education. When he wrote an
article of his school on the issue of sex many readers wonder what took so long. It shows that many
people had wanted the issue of sex discussed but it always avoided. It shows how many people want
discussion on the subject and education on the issue but it is less talked about in the media. Abstinence
has been talked about in school and people are made to believe in it because they are told failure to
observe may lead to pregnancy and ruin education. These words are used to show why sex education is
important to young people. He employs the sarcastic words to show how believers of only sex before
marriage have an assumption. He also wrote of a reader who had foregone sex in marriage yet she did
think additional sex experience would have been a good thing in her case, producing a more successful
marriage. The purpose is to show how sex education may lead to better marriages if people learn at an
early time. He writes transfer mishap could accidentally, for an additional to the population to
emphasize how young people feared to have sex because it could lead to pregnancy. He also says Had I
wrecked my life to show his fear of sex that it could lead to a destruction of his life if his girlfriend
became pregnant. He also says Hi folks. Meet Janie to show his fears of having to travel home from
college if his girlfriend fell pregnant.

He also educates people by showing people how past ways of making people abstain ends up
torturing them. He talks of that character is built by biting the bullet and waiting but not one bricks
worth of character was built to educate people to avoid weird ways of making people abstain. He also
writes considering the thinness of my sexual activity at the time, the odds against the calamity that
haunted A.B. Cavette were somehow below zero to show his lack of sex education and educate people
on its need. Sleep was fitful and sometimes impossible is meant to educate his audience on the need for
sex education on young people.
The audience of the article is parents and school administrators. They are the people who deal
with young people and need to educate them on matters of sex. He also wrote to them to avoid the
assumption of abstinence by young people but educate young people on the subject. I received zero sex
education at home shows that his parent did not talk about the subject and parents should educate their
children on sex matters. He says of his fear that to the danger of a wrecked school life and education
from an unwanted pregnancy to tell his audience on the need to conduct sex education.
The persona is a columnist. He explains on the need for young people to be educated on the
subject and how his lack of knowledge on the subject made his life tough. My last column inspired
number of thoughtful replies shows that he has a column that is read by a high number of people. He
also writes glad that so many writers liked the column to show that he engages with people through
writing. He also says that You made me laugh. You, the reader to show that there are people who reply
to his readings.
Cavett also uses authoritative testimony is his article. Your mother asked your father how
farthest he had gone with before-marriage girlfriend to show a testimony of a reader emphasizing how
important the debate on sex education is. I received zero education at home emphasizes on the need for
sex education by giving his testimony. Had I done that? Had I wrecked my life? shows his deep fear of
ruining his life if his girlfriend became pregnant.
Cavett has also applied analogy in his article. He quotes one true church to symbolize the
Catholic Church that was ones believed to be the anointed church of God. This analogy is used to show
the misconception of abstinence. He also uses rhythm method of pseudo-contraception to show
abstinence as a way of avoiding pregnancy in marriages. He also writes commanded to go without a
