Statement of Intent:
I aim to create a website in Bootstrap. My website will be based around a Charity event I am
hosting. From the website I would like the users to be able to get all the relevant information they
require, be able to book tickets online so they can attend the event and lastly I want them to be
able to view the pictures that were taken on the night.
This fits in well within the interactive media boundaries as it is web based and also allows the user
to interact with the website as well as get all the information they require. Commonly, Interactive
Media refers to products and services that are presented on computers respond to users actions
by presenting them with text, graphics, animations and many others.

Competitors:
As my website is based on commercial there are a lot of competitors in my field, however my
website is for charity and therefore I will not make the money myself.
Make a Wish are a charity that host various
balls throughout the year, for each of the balls
they have a website which informs the audience of all the essential information. I would
like to do something similar as it has been so
successful over the years. Here is a screenshot of what one of the ball pages looks like.
I like the way it is all set out and easy to use,
the main page allows the user to scroll down,
however the navigation bar will always remain
Figure 1
at the top of the screen. This is something I aim to be able to do as it allow the users to navigate
everywhere on the site. I would like the layout to be similar however, the page doesnt allow
users to purchase tickets through the website itself. Therefore Make a Wish wouldnt be a competitor on that aspect of the website.
3

Lastly, there is the breast cancer pink ribbon ball, this is located on the breast cancer website
and doesnt have much information as I would like mine to have. It is very basic with the colours black, white and pink and also it seems the
layout and website as a whole is very dated. You are
able to do everything I wish to do with my website
that I aim to create however, I would like mine to
be of a much higher standard. On the ticket and
donation page, it shows the audience have to email
to get on the waiting list for next years ball, however it doesnt mention buying tickets online; therefore I am not sure if it will be the website I aim to
create.

Figure 2
Although TicketMaster isnt involved in charity functions, the website allows the users to purchase tickets straight from the website using a shopping cart. I aim to be able to have a working
shopping cart, allowing the user to purchase any tickets for the event and after the event has finished, they will be able to purchase photos that will be placed on the website. I aim to have mine
look similar to theres, with the basket shopping on every page they go on, and also hopefully i
would like it to recognise the users name, similar to that in the screenshot below.

Figure 3
4

The charity ball I am hosting is for children with cancer, they also have their own ball every
year where they alone raise amazing amounts of money. However you are not able to buy tickets
to the ball online but can donate through the page itself. This is something I will not be doing
however will be good to do if the ball goes well and starts to become an every year ball. The
screenshot shows the buttons to donate via the website and also gives you all the information
about the ball further down.

Figure 4

Having looked through these different competitors I will make mine more informative and also
have images the audience can actually look through and download. I would like to have a button
which allows the user to donate however I will not be able to learn everything in time and have it
of good quality. Most of the ball websites, ask for emails if the user would like to purchase a ticket
rather than allowing them to do it through shopping baskets online, similar to TicketMaster and
other shopping websites.

Target Audience:
Having looked through Creative Industries my target audience fall under the Dinner and A
Show categorie; this is around 20% of English adults. They enjoy spending time with friends
and family and socialising both online and offline. Although the age group is from twenty five
to sixty five, they have alot of stuff in common. In the text it says they not all of them give to
charity however all those attending the event and viewing the website will be giving to charity.
They have money and therefore will spend it, which is exactly what is needed at a charity event.
Below is an image showing what Dinner and A Show audiences are like according to Creative
Industries.

User Centered Storyboard:

I have created a storyboard to get a feel of what the website will look like. I have included ten
slides all of which are different however keep the same layout. I want the layout to be consitant
throughout to keep it professional looking.
I will also have the boarder across the whole of the top of the website as this will be on all of the
leaflets that are handed out.

Textual Statement:
As I am creating a website that can fall under the commercial category, there isnt much to analyse
about theories and issues. Although there are websites out there that will be similar to mine, mine
will be unique. I feel that having the website will be a better platform to sell the tickets rather than
a physical shop as the user can do it from their seat rather than have to go elsewhere, also they can
book it with friends or while talking to friends to ensure everyone they want to sit with is going
together. It would cost money to rent a shop for a month or two until the tickets are sold and having a website would stop all of those problems as I am creating it myself and therefore will be free
of charge. The only possible danger to this could be someone could use someone elses card and
purchase tickets they dont actually want or fraud. Someone could have the details stolen through
the Internet and it wont look good on myself. I will not pass on any information I collect through
the website and once the event is over I will promptly delete everything I received. Also as all the
money is going to charity, I will have to include some text somewhere to ensure the users know
where their money is going so they dont think I am taking the money for myself, I will also have
to include the charity number and the slip provided by Children with Cancer to prove I am raising
money for them.

User Testing:
To ensure the website is working how it should be, I will conduct user testing various times
throughout the whole process. Once the website template is up I will test to ensure it is all working
properly and that it is clear for the users to both read and understand. I will then get the shopping
cart ready and have create the page in which the tickets can be purchased from. This will need
testing as soon as it is created to ensure it is all working. If it isnt working I will not move on from
the section until I get it working. This is a high priority for me as the website is there for users to
be able to purchase their tickets, and without people purchasing the tickets there will be no ball.
Lastly, once everything is complete and the website is ready to go I will test it myself, however I
will also get three other people to test it. This will ensure they all like the way it works and if there
is any feedback I think is worth changing things around for I will make the amendments and get
them to retest it to ensure with the new improvements it is easy to use and also works perfectly
fine; especially with the shopping bag and checkout.
9

In order to ensure my user testing is correct and will help to give me the best results, I have devised
a user testing methodology. Firstly, I will test three members of my university class, as they are on
the same course and know what to look out for and also I will ask three members of my family as
they will be able to give me feedback from a non-computer based background. This will ensure my
feedback is not biased towards those who know a lot about websites and the internet in general. I
will have them test my website on three different ocassions as mentioned previously, Firstly when
the template and pages are up to ensure everything is running smoothly, secondly when the shopping cart is in place I wil need them to purchase some tickets from the website and lastly they will
need to test the whole website once it is complete. This will enable to me to recieve feedback as I go
along, as well as ensuring it works for everyone. I feel this is better rather than waiting till the last
minute to ensure everything is working once the website is complete. In order to make sure they
are looking for the exact things I want, I will design user tasks telling them what I want them to do
on the website and then have them fill out a questionnaire at the end to ensure they answer what I
need them to be looking for. For example I will ask them to buy tickets from the website and also
question them on the usability of the website along with the visual communication and layout.
As well as using quessionnaires I will also systematically observe those testing the website to
determine whether they can use the website rather than them giving incorrect answers. I will usse
qualitative and usability testing together to get a better understanding of the users perception along
with their actions.
The questions I ask will be those I wish to have answered rather than things that will not be useful. User testing is essential when designing a website, especially when as complex as mine as an
untested website is no good, especially when it will be commercial.

Gantt Chart:
A Gantt chart is commonly used in project management, it is the easiest way to display the events
that need to be completed along with the deadline set. There are two hundred and fifty hours
allocated for this project and this is split over twelve weeks therefore in my Gantt Chart I have
spread everything out equally and have given myself enough time to get everything completed to a
high standard. Here is a copy of my Gantt Chart which highlights the progress I will go through to
achieve my overall goal. I have set out time for product design, research, creating the project and
lastly user testing.

New Learning
I already have basic knowledge of both Adobe Photoshop and Flash, however as it is my final
year project Id like to broaden my knowledge and work with something I have never used before. I could create a website in Flash if I wanted to however I will only use that option if all else
fails. In my first year of university I created a website in Adobe Dreamweaver however it was
very basic, and because of this I am not confident enough to use Dreamweaver. As I would need
to teach myself the very basics and learn from the beginning in Dreamweaver I have decided to
learn something completely different. I am going to create my website in Bootstrap as it is new
and highly recognised in the industry and this can be used to my advantage when later looking
for a career.
Bootstrap and Dreamweaver however are two completely different programmes, Adobe Dreamweaver is a software program for designing web pages, essentially a more fully featured HTML
web and programming editor (Computerhope.com, 2015). Secondly Bootstrap is the most
popular HTML, CSS, and JS framework for developing responsive, mobile first projects on the
web (Otto, M. 2015). However it is possible to create a website inside Dreamweaver using Bootstrap.
I will have to start from the very beginning and work as hard as possible to get it completed to a
very good standard by the deadline. As well as using completely new software, I havent created
a commercial website before; by this I mean I have never added a shopping cart and given the
user the ability to choose what they wish to purchase.
This will need a lot of time and research however I am dedicated and want to include it on my
website. I will have to look through tutorials for both bootstrap and also the shopping cart, but
if I allow myself enough time I will be able to do it.
I will look to create a template and use that to help me import the information in the correct
places and also make it look as best as it can.
I am creative and therefore this will help me to create something that is hopefully unique but
also user friendly, as this is key when creating a website of such.
Lastly I will use Adobe Photoshop and also Illustrator to create my images as I have knowledge
of Photoshop however I am also now learning how to use illustrator which could be an advantage to me. As the images that go on the site will need to be edited, I am better at editing in Photoshop so I will use that however if I need to draw something for a particular page I will use the
skills I am learning at the moment and use the pen tool in Illustrator to ensure I have smooth
lines and curves; something you can not get when using the pencil tool in Photoshop.
13

Project Relations:
When I finish university I want to go into either website design or advertising. Ive done one of
my projects on advertising and not much on websites and therefore I felt that doing a website as
my final year project would go well when applying for website designing jobs.
Looking through Creative Industries job descriptions, Digital marketing officer describes
what I would like to go in to (Nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk, 2015)

14

Development of Idea:
Here is a site map I have created, which
shows the pages I will have on my website.
I aim to include all of them to maximise
what users are able to do via the website.
I have included four pages for the gallery,
however if there needs to be more I will add
them on.
I have included a page for the auction; this
will enable users to see what is in the different auctions before they arrive at the ball.
They can then budget how much they wish
to spend.
Tickets will be available to purchase, helping
those who need to purchase their tickets. All
the information will be available from the
page.
I will have a contact page, giving my information in the event anybody needs to
contact me however I will also have a page
allowing individuals to email me straight
through the website if they need any help.
Lastly, the shopping cart will be on a separate which will be accessible from the
navigation bar, allowing users to navigate
through the website efficiently.

15

User Interface Design

I have designed four different user interface designs to give a feel of what my website will look like.

16

17

18

19

User Journey
I have created a user journey, which maps out what the user can do via the website. I have included all the pages and where you can go from there. The user can access the home page from
every page on the website.

20

Promotion Strategy:
Flyer
I have designed a flyer, which will help me to sell and promote the charity ball, it has all the
information required. I have used the same heading throughout as I thought it would look more
professional.

21

Website Banner
As well as designing a flyer, I have also designed a banner which could help me get the message
across quicker. The flyer is size 500 X 500, which is an average banner size and it can go on to
any website. Banners are a good form of advertising, and therefore with my project I feel a banner would be essential. I have included all of the relevant information, and when the user clicks
on the banner on the page they have viewed it, the banner will take them straight to the page
where they will then be able to buy as many tickets as they wish.

22

Stlye Sheet
Colour scheme
As I am creating a website, the colours I use are essential. They need to be proffesional and
consistant, rather than changing colours throughout.
The colours I have chosen are red, white and black. Red will be used to break up the colours,
as it is bright and stands out. I will use the red for my border and underlining anthing that is
important. White will be used as my background, and for any text if there is a coloured box
anywhere. Lastly, black will be used for the text. This will make it easy for the users to read the
information on the screen.

Typography
As the information, must be read I want to keep the typography simple, therefore I have decided
to use Minion Pro size Sixteen for the text amongst the whole website, if the text is too small
for the audience to read I will increase it to twenty. To break the typography up a bit I will use
Lucida Calligrapy size twenty for the headings, as the charity is for Children with cancer and the
headings will represent the children writting.

Minion Pro Size 16

Minion Pro Size 20

Lucinda Calligraphy Size 20

23

Logo
I wasnt sure on what to have as the logo for my project, so I sat down and
thought about the whole process and why I am holding the Charity Ball.
As my sister was a little girl when she fell ill, and we are hosting the Ball
for Children with Cancer I felt it was right to have a little girl as my logo.
I made the girl silhouette and coloured in her ribbon and heart red,
which allows the logo to fit in with the overall colour scheme.
The crown on the little girls head, represents that even though they are ill
they should be made to feel like a princess.

Social Media Campaign

As everyone now uses social media to interact, to promote my website and event I have created
a Facebook page, which will allow users to like the page and follow all of the information about
the charity event. As well as Facebook, I have created a Twitter account, which will also help
users to stay up to date with the event and any information changes. On both of the campaigns,
I will add my website domain allowing the audience to view my website once it is created.

24

Secondly, here is my facebook page that I have created, through this users are able to like the
page and information I post will appear on their timeline. As everyone uses facebook, it will
benefit me as I will be able to post information for everyone as well as give them the link to my
website.

25

Press Release
I have created a press release, which will allow individuals to find out all the relevant information about the ball and at the same time promote the website, telling them what they can
find online.

26

Professional Quality
Throughout the website I wish to achieve professional quality, as this is a final year project and
could help pursue my dream career once completing university.
In order to ensure what I create is of professional quality I will have to ensure all of the images
on the website are of high quality and can be seen even if they are in thumbnail boxes, allowing
the user to recognise themselves in the pictures rather than having to go through all of them to
find themselves.
As well as the pictures being of high quality, all of the text on the website has to be the same and
also easy to read. If the text is of different sizes and fonts, the users may find it difficult to read
the information on the page and could lose interest, which will end up turning them away. I will
ensure the text is of a size everyone can read and also not too big nor too small. If once everyone has read through the website, they feel the text could be too hard, I will add a button for accessibility, enabling those with poor eye sight to enlarge the text throughout the entire website.
I aim to make sure the website is easy to use, this includes the shopping cart and the navigation.
Users should be able to navigate throughout the website regardless on what page they are on
this helps to achieve professional quality rather than having the user go back to the first page
in order to be able to go to another. As well as the navigation, I will ensure the shopping cart is
easy to use for those of all ages. I will make sure nothing is too complex.
The colours of the website will be minimal, as minimalistic websites are of professional quality
rather than having too much information along with many different colours on the page. I will
ensure everything works well together, and to that of a professional standard.
Although I am creating a website, I also have flyers and banners and therefore they will have to
be kept to proffesional quality. I have printed out the flyers on high gloss paper, and spent some
money on them so they look proffesional.

27

Ethical Implications:
Although my work is going to be based on something I am creating rather than on information,
there isnt any ethical implications. However as I will be using six people for my user testing, I
will have to ask for an ethics approval, although I will not be publishing the results anywhere it
is essential for me to grant permission before asking them to test my work. It will be of minimal risk however as I will not be asking for their name or any of their details, only for them to
answer the questions I ask them to the best of their ability.
However, I will be gathering clients information through the website so I must ensure they
know what I will be doing with this information when it is created to abide by the data protection act.
