A vital new short course designed to support effective and

cost-effective commissioning with communities.

This course will be delivered by Prof David Morris (Director,

Centre for Citizenship and Community, UCLan), Mr Gabriel
Chanan (researcher and policy analyst on community
involvement, with Europe-wide experience; part of the HELP
project and co-author with Colin Miller of Rethinking
Community Practice (Policy Press, 2013)), Dr Brian Fisher (GP
and NHS Alliance exec member and lead for the HELP
project), Prof Chris Heginbotham (Emeritus Professor,
UCLan and Director, Values Based Commissioning Ltd), Dr
Karen Linde (Centre for Citizenship and Community: senior
level experience in academic and NHS development contexts
and on policy, workforce and engagement issues for the
public sector; strong interest in systemic solutions to health
inequalities), Mr Colin Miller (practitioner, manager and
trainer on community development and empowerment; part
of the HELP project), and Dr Manjit Bola (Senior Lecturer,
Community Engagement, UCLan).

Social Commissioning for Health is the work of a partnership

between the Centre for Citizenship and Community (CCC) at
the University of Central Lancashire and the NHS Alliance. It
has been designed to enable you to:

Commission with and for your communities

Commission to enhance community building and

development

Understand and harness local community assets

See how health and care needs are met jointly by

professionals, patients and communities

Understand the benefits, the gains and the risks

This course brings together three major types of practice

approaches to form a uniquely powerful approach to social
commissioning:

Values-based practice

Needs-and-assets approach

Community development

This is a two-day, two-part course, with an interval of about

six weeks during which delegates are asked to apply the
principles and practice from part one in their own local
context and bring the experience of doing so to part two.
Much of the course will be based on your experience in daily
practice, but you will also learn about the evidence-base;
how to engage the values of the community and clinicians;
the cost-benefits of these approaches; how to apply an
asset-based framework; practical models of community
development and how to work effectively with communities
from a variety of different perspectives.

Who should attend?

This is a course for CCGs, GPs, Health and Well-Being Boards
and local authorities. This course will help CCGs to
implement the NHSs Five Year Forward View and Local
Authorities to fulfil their responsibilities for both
participatory democracy and community engagement in
health and wellbeing. It will assist Health and Well-Being
Boards in taking a strategic and practical approach to public
health and community engagement.

They have experience of community building on the ground,

as well as a strong theoretical background. They are familiar
with the worlds of NHS, local authorities, third sector and
communities.
