Objectives:
Understand and establish a common understanding on the principles and
practices of community-led total sanitation.
Acquire skills to design and deliver a training program on community-led total
sanitation.
Understand the behavior change principles
Support sanitation stakeholders like NGOs, development partners, districts and
communities in accelerating the achievement of the national sanitation goals
through the use of CLTS.

Develop action plans aimed at scaling up CLTS in the respective districts and
communities

Day 1
(Session 1st)
In the First day of the Training was started at 9 am at Libra Hotel (Bahawalpur). In this
training participants from Lodhra Pilot Project (LPP Lodhra) and Plan-Pakistan,
including Program Manager, Project Manager, District Manager, Social Organizers and
Monitoring and Evaluation officer were represents LPP. All the participants were
reached before time and also resource person Mr. Barkat Ali Riaz (COO) welcomes all
the participants
Training was started at right time with the Tilawat Quran e Pak. All participants and
resource person were introduced themselves with an activity that asked 5 questions

the balloon and then each individual to read
one page of introduction from the shuffled
balloons.
Expectations and fears asked from all
participants with an activity. Gave two cards and marker and gave the instruction that
write Expectations on one flash card and on other write the Fears of this training. He
collected all the cards from the participants and pasted on the wall.
Norms were set by resource person. Resource Person asked the from all the
participants and write on the charts,

(Session 2nd)
Program Manager Mr. Arshad presented the
detailed Introduction, Vision and Mission
Statement of the LPP and Introduction and
targets of WASH (CLTS) project by Plan
Pakistan.

presented the background, objectives,
introduction, identity, vision, plan and
program of Plan Pakistan
Then the CLTS session was started at 12 PM
by the Mr. Ajmal Shah with the slides and brain-storming. In this session covered the
introduction of CLTS (Community Led Total Sanitation), OD (Open Defecation) & ODF
(Open Defecation Free) terminologies used in WASH project then lecture about the
current situation of WASH in Pakistan with the statistical point of view, the issues on
the Sanitation over World

(Session 3rd)
After that a group work session formed 4 groups and assigned the 4 topics to each
group

(Session 4th)
After the Tea break Self assessment

participants.
Then
each
group
presented the all 4 topics mention
above in last session on the charts
Feedback of trainers and question from
other groups also included during the
presentation. Then categorized the
each group on the basis of relevancy of
the topics gave marks of presentation
of participants by resource person.
After that Detailed introduction of the Community Led total sanitation (CLTS) and
Pakistan Approach Total Sanitation (PATS) and its difference. Then the shared the
difference between the Activists and Natural Leaders
After long and tiring session, an energizer for all participants, the resource people
formed 4 groups and gave pieces of triangle cards and asked to form a square from all
pieces. Every one tried their best to form square. This activity related to team work and
team leading

The component of CLTS and Triggering process briefly described to all participants in
the last session of the day the first day was closed at 6 PM

Day 2
(Session 1st)
Mr. Syed Ghaznafar (Project Manager of WASH CLTS) started first session with Tillwat
-e- Quran Pak. Then reviewed the last day sessions by wash team and PM in 30
minutes

Mr. Farrukh (Plan Pakistan) introduced himself and started the session with
components of PATS and the CRPs Selection criteria, then revised the triggering
process.

(Session 2nd)

Before the lunch Break Member of each group presented the topic which was assigned
by the Resource Person. Feedback was

presentations, Presented by all groups.
Next briefly described the Mix Village
Organizations composition, minimum
participation of Village Organization is
11 (Men=4, Women=3, Girl=1, Boy=1,
Disable person=1, Marginalized or
Minorities=1).

(Session 3rd)
After the Lunch Break continue the session on composition of Village Organization. If
the group will be for just only for male then Composition will be minimum 11 (Men=6,
Boy= 4, Disabled, 1 and marginalized or minorities=1) same as for Female group. It
can be increase the number of candidates 11 to 19 with same ratio. One meeting
should be held with VOs in a month. WASH Action plan formed during the triggering
process. Before the tea Break a video documentary on triggering tools, concept and
Process shared with all.

(Session 4th)

After the tea break a demo session on trigging tools and process was conducted.
Identify the five candidates from all participants. Assigned the duty to each candidate
and play a demo session of triggering process with all by Absar and Salma. In Demo

Day 3
(Session 1st)
The first session was started in the Latiska Hotel Lodhran, Mr. Ajmal Shah was the
resource Person for that day. Session was started with recitation of Holy Quran. After
that session on the Roles and Responsibility of Facilitators was conducted. 5 kinds
of facilitators were identified for the triggering process in the field. These were,

The resource person briefly oriented about all kind of facilitators


Resource Person formed 4 groups, 2 males and 2 females groups, 11 candidates in
each group. Each member assigned each responsibility, mention above types of
facilitators.

(Session 2nd Field visit)


Both Team moved to field Team-A visited in Basti Sonhara, UC Sumra, Tehsil &
District Lodhran and Team-B visited in Basti Dhana UC Sumra Tehsil & District
Lodhran. Both Teams practice on the Triggering Process. Each Team male and Female

Group visited in same village for triggering process. In male Group 45 Participants, In
Female Group 32 participants in triggering process. In the Team-B 49 participants
participated in male group and 41 participants in the Female Group. After 2 hours
stayed in the Village they came back Hotel Libra BahawalPur, they took lunch.

(Session 3rd)

After came back from the field the resource


person assigned group work every group.
Each Group presented 3 presentations where
everyone shared their experiences in the field

In each presentation identified the gaps in
Triggering and explore the ideas about new field plan to overcome these gaps.

(Session 4th)
In the last session joined Mr. Akbar (Water, Environment and Sanitation officer) from
the Plan Pakistan. In this session he discussed about the Low Cast Sanitation tools,
Methods of excreta disposal and proper Location of latrine in the house. He briefly
described that

every location of Latrine should downhill and away from well 30 50 feets
Pit bottom should be 2 meter above from water Table
Ventilation To the side where wind goes away
Accessible for emptying
Accessible for easy use
Consideration for Neighbours.

At the end of session he differentiates about the different types of Latrines.

Day 4
(Session 1st Field visit)
Ever one ready at 8 AM at Latiska Hotel Lodhran. Teams and their groups were same
which were formed last day. But duty was changed individually each group. Team-A
was Visited in Iqbal Colony, UC Sumra, Tehsil and District Lodhran. Team B was
visited in neighbor village.

Team-A gathered the people of Iqbal colony for triggering process. Mr. Altaf Hussain
(Social organizer) was the facilitator and the other members were co-facilitator,
observer, Record keepers and environment setters. Observers note down the full
process of triggering and Environment setters had taken session for children on
hygiene. After two hours activities all teams reached at the Hotel Libra.

(Session 2nd)
After tea Break both team came back from
the field and started the group work on the
field visits observations. After that each
group of each presented the reflection of
field visited same like the last day. Some
tips were given to the all members for the
improvement of the triggering process in the
training. At the end of this session before
the lunch, an energizer for all participants,
the Resource person formed 4 groups and
gave 4 eggs, one egg for each group. Each group use available resources and throw
the egg such that it could not break and link this activity with Resource mobilization.

(Session 3rd)
After lunch and prayer participants came back
on time and the session was started again. The
important part of project and the training were
Water, hygiene and sanitation. Another group
work performed in that session formed 4 groups
and assigned 3 topics to each group for the
sake of sharing different views and ideas about
the hygiene. The four topics on hygiene were,
1. What is hygiene
2. Types of Hygiene
3. Causes and effects of Bad Hygiene
The discussions of the each group on their topics they prepared well decorated charts and two
or three members from every group presented each topic one by one and question answers of
each group.

(Session 4th)
The Condition of sanitation in Pakistan shared with the all that in Pakistan only 60
Million people access of Safe Water and 120 Million people has adequate sanitation,
1.6 Million children under five die from Diarrhea/year in the world and in Pakistan
53000 children under five die each year. 112 billion rupees/year expenditures in

Pakistan Around 55 80 billion Rupees/year cost associated with Diarrheal Diseases


alone. 48% house holds dont have latrine facility. After sharing the figures with
participants then shared the importance of Water for life. 70 % of the body consists of
water. Water is life. Find the best source of water for the community to prevent water
related diseases.

Why Hygiene Promotion is needed in the


Disaster? To reduce Diarrheal prevalence
by 40% and can reduce HH medical
expenditures & Contribute HH economy,
clean home and environment.
During this session discussed about the Menstrual Hygiene Management and Need of
Menstrual hygiene Management, who is the responsible for the MHM, Mothers,
Sisters, Teachers, & peer groups friends. At the end of session again precisely revised
the types of Latrine which was discussed last day

Day 5
(Session 1st)
The session was started at 9 AM with Tilawat Quran-e-Pak. Mr. Absar and Miss
Salma(Social Organizers) review the 4 days activities with question answers.
In first Session formed pairs from all participants and then gave the flash cards to all
pairs and assigned to write the thoughts about Community
According to the Trainer
A Community is a set of people living together with common interest
Then after Resource person defined the difference between Social Mobilization and
Social Organization.
Social mobilization is the cornerstone of participatory approaches in rural
development and poverty alleviation programs. It is a powerful instrument in
decentralization policies and programs aimed at strengthening human and institutional
resources development at local level.
Social mobilization process, why social mobilization is needed, benefits of Social
mobilization topics and precisely described about the Stake Holders were presented by
Resource Person. Who can the stake holder in WASH projects and shared the action

plan from the community that how can form an action plan from the community
after that more discussion on the Good Facilitation skills. For Good Facilitation
need some more skill like Communication, observation skill, listening skills,
contact, Confidence, more importantly using easy Language that could other
easily understand. There are following skills should have a good facilitator,

An Activity was conducted to understand the importance of Communication and


listening skill. The Resource Person formed 2 pair of Groups. Each group has one best
listener and one best communicator. Ones face was towards south and others face
was towards north but both were in opposite face. The facilitator whispered the best
communicator 2 alphabetic,G and K and ask him with telling in geometrically way to
write those alphabetic. Same assignment was given to for the 2 nd pair. And the result is
given

(Session 2nd)
In next sessions is about the Entrepreneurs. With an hour shared the slides on
entrepreneurs, in this session what is entrepreneur, objective of entrepreneur, different
design used by the entrepreneur and marketing tools (Product, Price, Promotion and
placement). Each tool discussed with all briefly and takes input from the all
participants. What will the cost of sanitation product and what type sanitation material
is needed for the latrine constructions? the entire questions were concerned with the
WASH activities. Some more discussion on the Promotion mixes and then presented
the strategy about the promotion of product. Placement dynamics shared with all
participants At the end of session what can the future planning for any entrepreneur.
After Completion of session by Mr. Ajmal, Mr. Azam Kaynai (Plan International) joined
and reviewed 5 days session by probing and with participation of all participation. He
gave some good tips on participation tools. He also shared past experiences on
training participation that gives the way towards facilitation skills in the community.
Mr. Mahar Arshad (Program Manager LPP) & Mr. Raja Iftkhar (Deputy Project
Manager) Plan Pakistan shared the objective, activities targets on quarterly basis and
total budget of WASH (CLTS) Project.

Mr. Barkat Ali Riaz (COO LPP) gave closing remarks at the end of the training and
after that the best participation award was given to Mr. Absar Bukhari from the male
side that participated with passion and gave almost accurate and to the point answers
during the training. From female side Miss Salma nominated best participation award
in the training. Special gift given to Mr. Ajmal Shah for managing the good environment
and excellent training of Trainer of 5 days

At the end Every participants awarded certificates of the training by LPP thourgh
Mr.Azam Kayani (Plan Pakistan), Mr AJmal Shah(Trainer) and Mr. Waseem Aslam
(LPP) A group Photo session was Conducted before leaving from training Hall.

Evaluation and Recommendations


Workshop Administration:
Participants were mostly satisfied with workshop administration, but offered a few suggestion

Choose a hotel Which have large space in Hall

Allocate more time for trainings few topics skipped or described shortly.

Training Resource manual:


Participants generally commented that Hand outs were useful user friendly tools, but some
recommendation to improve it

It was planned for the Hill area and Example were quoted from the Upper area of
Pakistan, it should also for the ground(Lower) area of Pakistan
Included more case Study
Due to shortage of time most of Games, Role plays and Group Work skipped, Need
more activity such as group work role play and games for best Understanding.
