Essay Trisha and Trevor

The context of this transcript is enriched by various

linguistic features the author applies.
At the start we can identify the use of a discourse marker,
Trish starts by saying ``ok now, this marks the initial of the
talk show, it is signaling to the receiver ( the audience ) that
the talk show has started and indicates that she is the
dominant speaker which manages the agenda and control
whats going on during the conversation. Later on she repeats
this ``ok now though for a different purpose, this time she is
slightly changing the subject ( to talk about the other thing
Trevor was angry about with his partner ) and in passing telling
the audience that she has moved from the last topic. After that
she uses another discourse marker ``hang about, this time
her purpose is to emphasize on the surprising news of Trevor
and Martine are fiancs but actually not living together, and to
raise the interest in the audience (the receiver) which is the
whole purpose of the talk show.
As the conversation moved on, we can spot words
underlined which indicates intonation of the tone of the
speaker, which can be for various purposes but all dedicated
toward the same receiver thats Trisha and the audience. Trisha
says ``You, which we can interpret her emphasis on Trevor.
Trevor also uses ``coffee, to express to Trisha and the
audience how absurd he thinks the excuse his fianc gave him
is, he also highlights ``hug and ``kiss which he does to
how shocking the news of his fianc cheating on him by
hugging and kissing another guy is. Afterward Trisha says
``youve to point out clearly to the audience and to clarify
the fact that Trevor, even though giving everyone the
impression that hes the victim, has actually cheated on his
fianc as well. Trish wants to show the surprise and bizarre the
relation between Trevor and Martine is. In the end, Trevor
applies ``was and ``together to explain himself clearly and
to kind of simplify their relation so that the audience and Trisha
could get a better idea.
There is a frequent appearance of colloquial language
throughout the text; the use of this is to related to the purpose
of the conversation and the receiver. The purpose is to
entertain the audience and therefore a simple and
undemanding vocabulary is used, there are a lots of repetitions
of personal pronouns like ``her, ``I; also a lot of vague
language such as ``said something and ``if shes got
nothing to hide you know, these serve the purpose of
entertaining the audience by going through roughly the
unnecessary parts and give the audience a general idea of

things. Some incomplete utterances can be found ``um just

over two years ``lonely bored these happen due to
interruption during the conversation, or when Trevor is giving
short answer to Trishas direct questions.
Fillers are one of the features that appear most in this
conversation. The use of fillers by Trisha and Trevor has
different functions. When Trevor first said ``erm he is trying
to remember what exactly did his fianc do, he says this to
give him time to think. He says ``er later on to remember
when his fianc confessed to him. His ``um is trying to creat
him time to remember since when has the wedding dress been
hanging in the wardrobe. Trisha also saum an ``um she does
this to give herself time to take in the information Trevor has
just transmitted to her and to plan her next question.
There is a false start at the start of the conversation when
Trisha said ``what what is it when she says this she is
formulating the question in her head and does this to orientate
and correct herself.
Pauses can be identified frequently throughout the text,
when Trisha pauses she is taking in what Trevor just said, she is
also giving time for the receiver, the audience to catch up or
she does this to plan the agenda. However when Trevor pauses
he uses it as hedges. The conversation has clearly reached his
sensitive spot, thing he feel uncomfortable to talk about, so he
pauses to consider what is the best thing to say and how to
say it in the smoothest way, his purpose is to soften some
surprising news for the receiver, which is Trisha and the
audience.
The numerous adjency pairs set the structure of the talk
show. For this talk show it takes the form of question-answer,
where Trisha poses the question and Trevor answers it. Trisha
asks following her agenda trying to lead Trevor into telling the
answer to entertain the audience.
The context in general of this conversation has been
decorated be various linguistic resources, the purpose is to
entertain the audience and the receiver is none other than
Trisha and the audience watching the talk show.
