WHITE ON THE PASSOVER AND THE CEREMONIAL LAWS

Compiled by Derrick Gillespie
Those dissident SDAs who teach annual feast keeping (such as an annual Passover feast), and oppose
the SDA doctrine of a twofold law given to Israel (i.e. moral and ceremonial laws) and the abolished
ceremonial laws, even while trying to hold on to E.G. Whites role, function and utterances among
SDAs are conflicted/confused, and in fact are unwittingly opposed to E.G. Whites counsels on the issue
of the abolished annual feast days and ceremonial laws. They cant have their cake and eat it too, and
should step away from Adventism and denounce E.G. White along with Adventism, since their teaching
on observing annual feast days cannot be deemed to be in line with E.G. White teachings/counsels, and
that of bona fide SD Adventism. Proof of this reality? Read the following and see why!!
For All Time in Every Country.--In the place of the national *festival [notice, the *festival of Passover]
which the Jewish people had observed, He instituted a memorial service, the ordinance of feet
washing and the sacramental supper, to be observed through all time by His followers in every
country. These should ever repeat Christ's act, that all may see that true service calls for unselfish
ministry.EGW, Signs of the Times, May 16, 1900.
The Lord's Supper is not to be observed only occasionally or yearly.--The salvation of men depends
upon a continual application to their hearts of the cleansing blood of Christ. Therefore, the Lord's Supper
was not to be observed only occasionally or yearly, but more frequently than the annual Passover. This
solemn ordinance commemorates a far greater event than the deliverance of the children of Israel from
Egypt. That deliverance was typical of the great atonement which Christ made by the sacrifice of His own
life for the final deliverance of His people.EGW, 6BC, pg. 1090.
Christ ate the Passover supper with his disciples just before his crucifixion, and the same night
instituted the ordinance of the Lord's Supper, to be observed in commemoration of his death. The
Passover had been observed to commemorate the deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt. It
had been both commemorative and typical. The type had reached the antitype when Christ, the Lamb of
God without blemish, died upon the cross. He left an ordinance to commemorate the events of his
crucifixion. our Saviour instituted the Lord's supper, to be often celebrated, to keep fresh in the
memory of his followers the solemn scenes of his betrayal and crucifixion for the sins of the world.
EGW, Spiritual Gifts, pgs. 226-227. 1864
The Lord's Supper was the point of transition between two great *festivals.--The symbols of the Lord's
house are simple and plainly understood, and the truths represented by them are of the deepest
significance to us. In instituting the sacramental service to take the place of the Passover, Christ left for
His church a memorial of His great sacrifice for man. "This do," He said, "in remembrance of Me." This
was the point of transition between two economies and their two great *festivals. The one was to close
forever; the other, which He had just established, was to take its place, and to continue through all
time as the memorial of His death.EGW, RH May 31, 1898.
As He ate the Passover with His disciples, He instituted in its place the service that was to be the
memorial of His great sacrifice. The national *festival of [notice, the *festival of the Passover] the
Jews was to pass away forever. The service which Christ established was to be observed by His followers
in all lands and through all ages. ---EGW, Desire of Ages, p. 652.

While the institution of the Passover [i.e. both the *festival and paschal lamb] was pointing backward
to the miraculous deliverance of the Hebrews, it likewise pointed forward, showing the death of the Son
of God before it transpired. In the last Passover [i.e. the *festival] our Lord observed with His disciples,
He instituted the Lord's Supper [the new festival] in place of the Passover [i.e. the *festival], to be
observed in memory of His death. No longer had they need of the Passover, for He, the great
antitypical Lamb, was ready to be sacrificed for the sins of the world. Type met antitype in the death of
Christ--- EGW, Youth's Instructor, May 1873.
A Twofold System of Law.--God's people [the Jews], whom He calls His peculiar treasure, were
privileged with a two-fold system of law; the moral and the ceremonial.- EGW, RH May 6, 1875
there is a law which was abolished, which Christ "took out of the way, nailing it to his cross." Paul
calls it "the law of commandments contained in ordinances." This ceremonial law, given by God
through Moses, with its sacrifices and ordinances, was to be binding upon the Hebrews until type met
antitype in the death of Christ as the Lamb of God to take away the sin of the world. Then all the
sacrificial offerings and services were to be abolished. Paul and the other apostles labored to show this,
and resolutely withstood those Judaizing teachers who declared that Christians should observe the
ceremonial law. ---EGW, ST, September 4, 1884 par. 3
In this ordinance [of foot washing], Christ discharged His disciples from the cares and burdens of the
ancient Jewish obligations in rites and ceremonies. These no longer possessed any virtue; for type was
meeting antitype in Himself, the authority and foundation of all Jewish ordinances that pointed to Him
as the great and only efficacious offering for the sins of the world This [foot washing] ordinance does
not speak so largely to man's intellectual capacity as to his heart. His moral and spiritual nature needs it.
If His disciples had not needed this, it would not have been left for them as Christ's last established
ordinance in connection with, and including, the last supper. It was Christ's desire to leave to His
disciples an ordinance that would do for them the very thing they needed--that would serve to
disentangle them from the rites and ceremonies which they had hitherto engaged in as essential, and
which the reception of the gospel made no longer of any force. To continue these rites would be an
insult to Jehovah. Eating of the body, and drinking of the blood, of Christ, not merely at the sacramental
service, but daily partaking of the bread of life to satisfy the soul's hunger, would be in receiving His
Word and doing His will --EGW, RH June 14, 1898.

CONCLUSION:
Mrs. White couldnt any clearer that not just the paschal lamb emblem of the Jewish festival of the
Passover, but the Jewish *festival of the Passover itself was abolished/replaced, and was to pass away
forever, and in its place a new festival of the Lords Supper (admittedly biblically called the Passover
as well); a new festival, which was NOT to be observed only annually. Now if Mrs. White spoke this
definitely on this Passover festival or annual feast day of ancient Israel, then what she said of one
abolished annual feast obviously would apply to all the others. The fact that her repeated teaching over
several years (right up to her death) was that there was a two fold system of law that was given to the
Jews, and that the ceremonial laws were abolished and replaced by the new economy of Christianitys
spiritual realities fulfilling Jewish rites, ceremonies and services (which would naturally include the
annual festivals), then no one should be left in doubt about her teaching on the issues!! No one!!
