A. WHAT IS PROPER HAND WASHING?
"Proper hand washing with soap and water is an
important barrier to many infectious diseases and
promotes better health and well-beinghand
washing is one of the most practical and effective
ways of preventing the spread of disease."
-World Health Organization (WHO)
Hand washing is a very important healthy practice in our everyday
living. It has been a practice that before and after we eat, we usually wash
our hands, especially for Filipino people who are fond of eating their foods
with fingers. With this kind of practice we are already achieving health by
preventing the occurrence of the invading microorganisms to enter our body.
Our hands are the most unclean part of our body since these are the
ones we often used in performing different activities of daily living such as
performing house hold choirs, doing school activities and especially eating,
our hands are usually filled with bacteria.
Even though bacteria are everywhere, most of them are easy to get
rid of. And if you wash your hands regularly, you can decrease your chances
of catching or spreading an illness. Bacteria like to get together and hang out
in groups. They invite more bacteria to join them, and they even grow new
ones whenever they can. Bacteria especially like hanging around kids who
dont know about them, because they know they will be safer with boys and
girls who do not wash their hands frequently.

B. WHAT ARE GERMS?

These are groups of tiny invaders that can make our bodies
sick they're called germs. Germs are so small and sneaky
that they creep into our bodies without being noticed. In
fact, germs are so tiny that you need to use a microscope
to see them. There are four major types of germs:
bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Once germs invade our bodies, they
stay in for a long period of time. They eat up nutrients and produce toxins
which are like poisons. Those toxins can cause symptoms of common
infections, like fevers, sniffles, rashes, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Most germs are spread through many ways, including:

sneezing, coughing

touching dirty hands

changing dirty diapers

through contaminated water and food

through droplets released during a cough or a sneeze

via contaminated surfaces

through contact with a sick person's body fluids (sweat, saliva, and
blood)

C. FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE AGAINST GERMS

Remember the two words germs fear SOAP and WATER. Washing your
hands well and often is the best way to beat these tiny warriors.

Hand

washing is the first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses, from
the common cold to more serious illnesses such as meningitis, bronchiolitis,
influenza, hepatitis A, and most types of infectious diarrhea.
How to wash hands properly?
Here's how to scrub those germs away. Demonstrate this routine to the
students so that they learn how important this good habit is:

1. Wash your hands in warm water. Make sure the

water isn't too hot for little hands.
2. Use soap and lather up for about 15 to 20 seconds.
Make sure you get in between the fingers and
under the nails where uninvited germs like to hang
out. And don't forget the wrists.
3. Rinse well with water
4. Dry hands with a clean towel.

When to Wash Your Hands?

To minimize the germs passed around your family, make frequent hand
washing a rule for everyone, especially:

before and after eating

after using the bathroom

after cleaning around the house

after touching animals, including family pets

before and after visiting or taking care of any sick friends or relatives

after blowing one's nose, coughing, or sneezing

after being outside (playing, gardening, walking the dog, etc.)

Grade 1 Activity 1
Demonstrate how germs are spread. You can demonstrate this by
taking a pencil from a student; pretend to cough on the pencil. Tell the class
that if you returned the pencil to the student, he or she might get sick from
touching the pencil, and then touch his or her mouth or rub their fingers and
hands. Distribute the Handout 1. The Germs Are Spreading. There are for
illustrations on the handout that shows how germs can spread from one
person to the other. Have students look at the sheet and tell a story about
how this has happened.
Grade 1 Activity 2
Hand to students the handout 2,

Dont Give Me a Germ. Discuss

each picture; have the students circle the picture that shows some spreading
germs. Picture 1 shows a way to spread germs because two students are
sharing a sandwich. Picture 2 shows a student sneezing into a handkerchief.
This action show unsanitary and germs are being spread. Picture 3 shows a
student sneezing into a telephone. The next picture, picture 4 shows two
students holding hands. One of the students is coughing. If that student is
sick, germs could be spread if the cough was not covered.
Grade 1 Activity 3
Distribute the handout 3, Stop Those Germs. Have students circle
the picture that shows someone being careful not spreading germs. Discuss
each picture before the student circles it. Explain that wiping the telephone
might help to keep germs from spreading. Ask students to describe why the
person in
