UNIT 1. PLANTS
1. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS
Vital functions:
All living things perform three vital functions: Nutrition, Interaction and Reproduction.
[p.6, Key Concept Natural Science 5]
Unicellular and multicellular organisms
Living things that are composed of a single cell are called unicellular organisms.
Living things that are composed of two or more cells are called multicellular organisms.
[p.7, Key Concept Natural Science 5]
ACTIVITIES:
1) What are the vital functions of living things?
2) Match the vital functions with their definitions:
Nutrition

Plants produce offspring similar to themselves.

Interaction

Plants transform food into nutrients and get energy

from them.

Reproduction

Plants sense changes in the environment and react to

them.

3) Write the vital funcion of each sentence:

A sunflower grows towards the Sun.
A fox chases a rabbit to eat it.
A hen lays an egg.
A bean germinates.
4) Copy the picture on page 7. Use these words: cell, tissue, organ, system, organism.

2. CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANTS
A plant is a living thing with limited mobility that make their own food. They need water,
minerals, sunlight and carbon dioxide to make their own food.
Plants have three parts: roots, stems and leaves. There are differents types of plants:
Flowering plants: angiosperms and gymnosperms.
Non-flowering plants: ferns and mosses.

6) Draw a plant an its parts.
7) Make a conceptual map of the classification of plants (p.19).
8) Which are the oldest and largest trees on Earth? The oldest and largest trees on Earth are

3. PLANT NUTRITION
Photosynthesis: Plants make their own nutrients. During this process, plants absorb carbon
dioxide and water with minerals and release oxygen into the air.
Respiration: During this process, plants absorb oxygen from the air. Then, the oxygen and
nutrients are transformed into energy. Finally, plants release carbon dioxide and water
vapour into the air.

Photosyntesis -

- Plants absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

- Plants absorb carbone dioxide and release oxygen.

Respiration -

- Plants make their own nutrients.

- Plants transform oxygen and nutrient into energy.
