Tabernacle Cub Scout

Pack 439 collects food
for those in need
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
The holiday season is now in
full swing, and Tabernacle Cub
Scouts are doing everything in
their power to make sure no one
has to endure them with an
empty stomach.
Pack 439 participated in the
Scouting for Food Drive endorsed by the Boy Scouts of
America national office.
The pack has participated for
many years in this service project, collecting food for the community.
The Scouts learn that being a
part of the community sometimes means doing for others, and
during the holiday season, we
want all families to feel safe and
have the things they need, Pack
439 Committee Chair Judy Sailer
said.
"We do it because Cub Scouts
help people. We collect the food
for people who don't have enough
to eat so they can go to the
churches and get a healthy meal,

third-grade singers of the elementary school, an instrumental ensemble from Seneca High School, the Olson Middle School Chorus and
the OMS Hand Chimes group. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus also made a special appearance! For more photos, please see page 9.

Free child safety seat

installation checks weekly
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield is reminding residents that free checks of child
safety seat installations are offered by the Sheriff s Department
every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of the County Administration Building, 49 Rancocas Road,
Mount Holly.
It is important for our residents to know that these services
are available to them year
round, Stanfield said.
Our Child Passenger Safety
Seat Program conducts hands-on
training for parents and caregivers to ensure that their childrens safety seats are properly
installed.
We are very pleased that we
are able to offer this additional
service to busy parents, Stanfield said. The Sheriff s Department Child Safety Seat Team consists of state-certified technicians

who also check all child seats for

safety concerns and recalls.
The Burlington County Child
Passenger Safety Program has inspected more than 13,000 child
safety seats since its start 16 years
ago.
During the last year, only 8 percent of seats checked were installed correctly. This 92 percent
misuse rate is higher than the national average of 73 percent reported by Safe Kids USA.
According to the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, research on the effectiveness of child safety seats shows
their use can reduce fatalities for
children under 1-year-old by 71
percent and for toddlers (ages 1-4)
by 54 percent.
If used properly, a child safety
restraint can reduce the need for
hospitalization among children 4
years of age and under by 69 percent.

Seneca family chooses class over competition

Seneca proves its home field advantage during football games is not its No. 1 priority
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
When it comes to the Seneca
family, one thing that is near and
dear to their heart is protecting
their home field when the lights
come on Friday nights.
Home field advantage for the
football team has become a tradition at Seneca High School with
the creation of the Birds Nest
a name that was developed by the
student section that fills the
bleachers at every home game to
cheer the Golden Eagles to victory.
So when the school got news
that NJ.com would be conducting

field advantage in New Jersey,
students were instantly determined to win the contest.
A group of our fans and teachers nominated our school and
posted a couple pictures of our
student section. Within minutes,
it went viral like crazy. Our whole
community was on their phones
voting to show our Seneca spirit
and love for our school, student
Maggie Mitchell said. The race
was on to bring home that title!
Mitchell teamed with her classmate Samantha Scarpello to enter
her school into the competition.
The competitive duo knew
there was something special
about going to a football game at
Seneca and wanted to portray
how much the student body and
community gets behind the team
to the rest of the state.
As a freshman, youre so excited to go to every game, and as a
senior, you dont want it to end,
Mitchell said.
So the two girls teamed with
head coach Bill Fisher, and they
spread the word to acquire votes
through word of mouth and so-

They took to Twitter and used
the Seneca Birds Nest account,

fellow students to vote.
Scarpello saw this as the perfect vehicle to drive votes, as it
was successful in the past when
they used it to sell t-shirts for

Food donated to Church of Holy Eucharist food pantry

FOOD
Continued from page 1
Cub Scout Dawson Burgess said.
No one should feel hungry."
A few years ago, the father of
two Scouts in the troop, Dave
Burgess, suggested the Pack contacted ShopRite of Medford to see
how it could help.
Burgess got together with
ShopRite management and they
agreed to let the Cub Scouts stand
in the lobby of the store to hand
out flyers and explain what they
were doing for their food drive.
The Scouts also stood at the
exits to collect any donations
after shoppers were done making
their purchases.
The shoppers have been very
generous with their donations

filling several shopping carts

each year, Pack Master Keith
Zane said.
The collected food was then
transported to the Tabernacle
Community Center where it was
sorted into piles and taken to the
Church of the Holy Eucharist,
where it was then used to fill the
food pantry and Thanksgiving
dinner baskets.
There were six tables stacked
up with food. It was an enormous
amount donated to Holy Eucharist, and then the day after, we
found out that Tabernacle United
Methodist pantry was empty and
our families stepped up again to
take care of them, Sailer said.
Zane could not say enough
about how helpful Zallies
Shoprite was throughout the
process this year and during food
drives in past years.

When he would go shopping

there in his personal time, he
would notice signs they had printed and placed around the store
letting their shoppers know
which food was acceptable for the
Scout food drive.
He also attributed the success
of the food drive to the parents of
the Scouts who got involved.
We have a wonderful group of
leaders and parents that get our
Scouts excited about being involved in our service projects and
learning to give service to others, Zane said. This particular
project was to give our Scouts a
chance to gather food for others
in need and not receive anything
themselves.
The group sets out to have at
least one service project every
month for the Scouts. They also

Warren Hills quarterback died after game injury

WARREN

ed hundreds of old jerseys they washed
and handed out for everyone to wear.
The votes were pouring in after this, and
Seneca was in great shape to make a serious run at bringing home this competition.
However, one afternoon, Scarpello was
volunteering at the blood drive for student
council and overheard a group of people
talking about whom they would be competing against in the competition, and Warren
Hills Regional High School was mentioned.
But the school was brought up in discussion for a reason that had nothing to do
with the best home field advantage competition.
Warren Hills quarterback and threesport star athlete Evan Murray, 17, was injured on a tackle during the second quarter
of the teams game against Summit High
School. He flashed his teammates a
thumbs-up as he was taken away on a gurney. But not long after, he passed away.
An autopsy found his spleen was abnor-

mally enlarged, leaving Murray susceptible to this type of injury. The cause of
death was massive internal hemorrhaging
from a lacerated spleen.
I immediately just wanted to hug my
brother (Seneca quarterback J.J. Scarpello). It made me step back and think about
how lucky I am and to appreciate everything that I have in my life today, Scarpello said.
Thats when it hit Scarpello that this
wasnt about winning the best student section in New Jersey anymore. It was about
how Seneca could help support Warren
Hills through this tough time.
All we wanted to do was figure out how
we could make the best out of this situation and help a community that was
mourning the loss of one of their own,
Mitchell said. Seneca emphasizes family
and how good it is to come together during
tough times, so we knew we needed to
come together for Warren Hills.
The girls then completely refocused on
creating a new campaign, one that would
completely negate all the work they had already done and all the hours they had already poured into their original campaign.

They were now doing everything they

could to get people to vote for Warren Hills
Regional High School to beat Seneca and
win the competition.
The girls told everyone to vote for Warren Hills on social media, had everyone
wear blue to school one day in honor of
their school colors, raised money for a
scholarship in Evans name during their
Turkey Bowl game on Thanksgiving and
also sent a package with a signed Seneca
football helmet with all of the members of
the Seneca student section names on it.
That helmet now sits in the hallway at
Warren Hills Regional High School where
it is displayed as a symbol of compassion
from a competitor.
Warren Hills wrote Seneca a heartfelt
letter thanking it for the kind gesture.
Seneca also received a video from the Warren Hills student section, The Blue
Crew, thanking it for the helmet.
