Global Allergen / Intolerants Lists

Issue: December 12th 2005
Food allergens are any substance, but most commonly proteins or glycoproteins, which
may cause allergic reactions of the immune system in some individuals.
Food allergens may be naturally present in food or ingredients or occur through cross
contact, or in some cases are produced by processing, cooking or digestion. Allergic
reactions can occur on exposure to even minute amounts of the allergen, resulting in a
range of mild to severe symptoms affecting the skin, respiratory tract, intestinal tract, or a
combination of all three. In severe cases, a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
may occur. Presently no preventive therapy exists for those who are susceptible to food
allergies; these individuals must avoid consuming the specific food/drink or ingredient that
contains the allergen.
Food intolerance doesnt involve the immune system and is generally not life threatening.
However, if someone eats a food they are intolerant to, this could make them feel ill or
may affect their long-term health.
Cadbury Schweppes first priority is our responsibility to our consumers in terms of safety
and quality of our products.
Our concern remains with those individuals who may have an allergic reaction to certain
ingredients.
We have a consistent approach to managing allergens in manufacturing and by giving
accurate information and advise to consumers, in particular susceptible individuals.
This consistency significantly increases the potential for Global sourcing, for cross
sourcing and transfer of both ingredients and products within and between regions and for
delivering Smart Variety.
The development of Cadbury Schweppes Primary and Secondary Lists of food
allergens or intolerants contributes directly to our consistent approach to allergen
management.
This document provides details of the allergens/intolerants on each of these lists. These
have now been configured within the Cadbury Schweppes Technical Data Management
solution (TDMS) with the house rules providing the distinction between mandated
(Primary allergens) and non-mandated fields of data.
The current issue of this document can also be accessed via MyCS.net.

Cadbury Schweppes
PRIMARY LIST OF FOOD ALLERGENS
The following Primary List of Food Allergens are those allergens, identified by currently available
scientific or clinical knowledge and evidence, which have the highest prevalence of allergic reactions
in the population globally or have lead to recorded incidents of severe (life threatening) anaphylactic
reactions.
In many cases they have also been identified and their management recommended by national
regulatory bodies including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Union, the
Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), or the Secretaria de Salud (SS), as well as the Codex
Alimentarius Commission. Common examples of primary allergens found in confectionery or
beverages are shown in Table 1.
Within Cadbury Schweppes, it is required that for all allergens on this Primary list:
- data* must be obtained and maintained (e.g. annually) from suppliers on all of the primary
allergens present in ingredient and food products supplied to Cadbury Schweppes
- data* must be maintained on all primary allergens present in Cadbury Schweppes finished
products
These data are used:
- to guide the decision process for marketing and product labelling of allergens in accordance with
local legislation and/or standards set out by CS Global Regulatory Affairs.
- to guide the management of all primary allergens through the supply chain by GMP and HACCP
programmes
- to guide rapid and accurate responses to consumer or customer enquiries
* these data must be recorded, in the Cadbury Schweppes Global Technical Data Management
Solution (TDMS), where access is available, or in systems readily accessible at Regional level.

SECONDARY LIST OF FOOD ALLERGENS AND INTOLERANTS
The following Secondary List are those food allergens or intolerants that have been identified by local or regional
regulations, or end user markets applicable to Cadbury Schweppes as materials (in addition to those including on the
Primary List) having the potential to cause allergenic reactions or sensitivities in susceptible individuals.
For any Cadbury Schweppes region where local or regional regulations or where the end user markets identify the
requirement to manage an allergen or intolerants from this Secondary list then:
- all the requirements listed under the Primary list will apply for this specific allergen/intolerant.
In addition, within Cadbury Schweppes, it is required that for all allergens on this Secondary list:
- data* is requested from suppliers on all of secondary allergens present in ingredient, packaging and food
products supplied to Cadbury Schweppes
- data*, where available, is maintained on all secondary allergens present in Cadbury Schweppes finished

These data are used:
- to guide rapid and accurate responses to consumer or customer enquiries
