Question 1. Let f (x) = 2014 cos(x + 1).
(1) (10 marks) Find the domain and the range of f .
(2) (10 marks) Find functions g, h so that f (x) = g(h(x)), x (, ).
Question 2. Consider the function f defined by

x + a, if x < 0
x2 + 1, if 0 6 x 6 1
f (x) =

x b, if x > 1
where a and b are constants.
(1) (10 marks) Find values of a and b such that f is continuous on (, ).
(2) (10 marks) Sketch the graph of f with a and b found in (1). Is f differentiable
at x = 1?
1
Question 3. (1) (10 marks) Find limx0+ esin x x + sin x.

(2) (10 marks) Show that the equation x3 x sin x 1 = x x + 2, has a real root in
the interval [0, 2].

Question 4. Patrick throws a tomato straight up into the air. The height y of the
tomato at time t is given by y(t) = 16t2 + 20t + 6 (Units are meters and seconds).
(1) (10 marks) Compute the average velocity of the tomato between t = 0.9 and
t = 1.
(2) (10 marks) Find the maximum height reached by the tomato.
Question 5. (1) (10 marks) Suppose f and g are two differentiable functions on
(, ) and f (1) = 5, f 0 (1) = 3, g(1) = 1, g 0 (1) = 1. Find F 0 (1) where F (x) =
f (g(2x 1)).
(2) (10 marks) Let
f (x) = xcos x , x > 0.
Use logarithmic differentiation to find the derivative of f.
End.

SOLUTIONS:

Question 1. (1) The

domain
of
f
is
(,
)
and
the
range
of
f
is
[
2013,
2015].

(2) Let g(x) = 2014 x, x (, 2014] and h(x) = cos(x + 1), x (, ).

Question 2. (1) Clearly, f is continuous for any x (, ), x 6= 0, 1. If f is
continuous at x = 0 and at x = 1 then
lim (x + a) = lim+ (x2 + 1), lim (x2 + 1) = lim+ (x b)

x0

x0

x1

x1

Hence, a = 1 and b = 1.
(2) Note that
0

f (1) = lim
x1

x1
x2 1
0
= 2, f+ (1) = lim+
= 1.
x1 x 1
x1

Thus, f is not differentiable at x = 1.

Question 3.
Clearly,

1
0 (esin x ) x + sin x e x + sin x,
It follows from the Squeeze theorem that limx0+ esin
(2) Consider the function f defined by

f (x) := x3 x sin x 1 x x + 2,

1
x

x (0, ).

x + sin x = 0.
x [0, 2].

Obviously, f is continuous on [0, 2]. Moreover, one has

f (0) = 1;

f (2) = 8 2 sin 2 1 4 = 3 2 sin 2 1.

Therefore, f (c) = 0 for some c (0, 2) and c is a real root of the given equation.
Question 4.
(1) The average velocity is
10 11.04
y(1) y(0.9)
=
= 10.4(m/s)
0.1
0.1
(2) We have v(t) = 32t + 20. Thus v(t) = 0 gives t = 5/8.
The maximum height reached by the tomato is y(5/8) = 12.25(m).
Question 5.
(1) By the chain rule for differentiation, one has F 0 (x) = f 0 (g(2x 1)).g 0 (2x 1).2.
Thus, F 0 (1) = 2f 0 (g(1)).g 0 (1) = 2f 0 (1).g 0 (1) = 6.
(2)
ln y = ln xcos x = cos x ln x, x > 0.
Differentiating throughout with respect to x,
1 0 cos x
y =
sin x ln x
y
x
So
y 0 (x) =

cos x
sin x ln x xcos x .
