Test Preparation!
I prepared to conduct these tests in many ways. I read through the directions for the test as well
as the tasks that were to be given. I also went to the website myself to get a feel for what the
site was like. When I walked through each task, I found that some of them were extremely hard
to find. The only tasks that I had a lot of trouble finding information on were the last two bullet
points on task 2 and all of task 4. Let me begin with task 1. I used the search bar a lot in my
preparation and typed in perfect score and typed in championship race. Each of these took a lot
of scrolling up and down to find and looking through a lot of articles and links to find them, but I
eventually did. I noticed that the perfect score changed from the day that I first looked at it, and
the day that I did my testings on Alexis and Megan. For task 2, I typed in Aric Almirolas name
into the search bar. Once his name came up, it was really easy to find almost all of his information. From the search, I was able to find his current rank, car number, and year he started racing. As did my testers, I had a lot of trouble finding the number of races Aric had in 2010 and his
rank in 2011. I searched it a bunch of times and clicked and scrolled through every link on the
navigation bar and still could not find the information, so I eventually gave up. For task 3, I found
this to be extremely simple. I went to the search bar again and searched Mobil 1 Question of the
Week. I had to do some scrolling as the link I needed was a few articles down. Once I found the
correct article, I clicked on the video and listened for the question to be stated. I then paused the
video and hit the share on Facebook link that redirected me to Facebook. I then clicked the
share button. Task 4 was by far the hardest task for me. I went to the homepage of the site,
scrolled to the bottom and clicked on careers. I was then redirected to a page that asked for
keywords and had a drop down menu that had different types of jobs (full time, part time, intern,
etc.) I clicked intern on the drop down menu and waited for it to pull up all of the existing internships. The internship listed in the task was not on the list, so I went to the search box and tried

Kim Porter!
Web Publishing

2!

to find it that way. I still could not find it at all, therefore I was unable to answer any of the questions listed. This really worried me because if I could not even find the internship listing, how
would my testers be able to? Sure enough, my testers both had as much difficulty as I did and
they both even took some of the same steps as I did to try and find it. Lastly, task 5 was fairly
easy. I went back to the page under the fantasy tab on the navigation bar called perfect chase
grid challenge. This told me that there were no additional players that had a perfect score. !

Choosing Participants!
Tester 1: Alexis Whitney !
The first tester I chose was my roommate, Alexis Whitney. Alexis is a 20 year old female who is
a full time student and worker in the Talent Development Center. Alexis has been racing cars
since she was around the age of 14 and has grown up with a family that races as well. Her level
of interest in nascar.com is fairly high because it is something that she has interest in but it is
not a website that she is extremely familiar with or visits often. Some of Alexis favorite websites
include Teachers Pay Teachers, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Zillow, and Northwest Online. I
think that Alexis makes a reasonable tester because she is on the internet a lot. I wanted to test
one person who has a high-experience with the internet like Alexis and another tester that does
not to be able to compare the differences between the two. Though Alexis is a high-experience
user, her internet experience is mostly on social media sites. When asked how many hours she
spends on the internet, Alexis answered that she spends at least 30 hours a week all together.
She said the split between social media and browsing is probably about 40 percent social and
60 percent browsing.!
Environment for Tester 1!
Location of Test: The test was conducted in Roberta Hall in our room. We chose this location
because it was a quiet environment where we were able to shut off the TV and focus on the
test at hand. We were able to lock the door and block out any distractions.!

Physical Environment: The lighting of the room was a tad bit dim as the lighting in our room
is not very bright to begin with. There were no distractions around such as TV, music, or other
people. Since we locked the doors, we again were able to block out any possible distractions. !
Technical Environment: Alexis used her Northwest HP desktop computer which is set at a
screen resolution of 1366 X 768. The connection speed was rather slow since we were on
campus and the test was given at night time which may be a popular time to be on the internet
as most people may be finishing homework assignments. Alexis used a Google Chrome
browser to conduct the test. !
Tester 2: Megan Barney!
The second tester I chose was my other roommate, Megan Barney. Megan is a 20 year old female who is a full time student and worker in the Math Skills Lab in Mckemy. Megans level of
interest in nascar.com is extremely low because she does not know very much about racing or
Nascar. This was the first time that Megan had ever visited this website. Some of Megans favorite websites include Facebook, Lululemon, and the Nebraska Humane Society. I think that
Megan makes a reasonable tester because she is not on the internet a lot. Since I wanted to
test one person who has a high-experience with the internet like Alexis and another tester that
does not to be able to compare the differences between the two, Megan was a perfect fit. When
asked how many hours she spends on the internet a week, Megan answered that she spends at
least 25 hours all together. She said the split between social media and browsing is probably
about 10 percent social and 90 percent browsing. Megan makes a good tester because she
only uses the internet for shopping purposes, Sigma Sigma Sigma Treasurer purposes, and
school purposes. It is an advantage that she does not use this website at all and has never visited it because it gives the person running the test (me) a good idea of how good the user experience of a site is to someone who is not familiar with the site.!

Environment for Tester 1!

Location of Test: The test was conducted in Roberta Hall in the chapter room in the basement We chose this location because it was a quiet environment because it was during study
hours and there were only two other people around. !
Physical Environment: The lighting of the room was very bright as the lights in our chapter
room are very big. There were no distractions around such as TV, music, but there was the
distraction of others as well as cell phones. A few people came in and out of the chapter room
and tried to make conversation which made it even harder for Megan to accomplish the task
at hand. Her phone was also a big distraction for her as her text messages kept making her
phone go off. !
Technical Environment: Megan used her Northwest HP desktop computer which is set at a
screen resolution of 1366 X 768. The connection speed was extremely slow since we were on
campus and the test was given in the basement of Roberta Hall (chapter room). The internet
in the chapter room does not always run smoothly as it often times out and loses connection.
Megan lost connection and was forced to refresh the page one time during our testing. Megan
did her testing using Mozilla Firefox which could also add to the reason why the internet
browser did not run as smoothy as Alexis test did as Alexis used Google Chrome.!

Test Results!
Initial Site Thoughts:!
Tester 1 Report: !
Alexis noticed a lot of things as she looked through the front page of the website. Some of the
things she mentioned out loud while scrolling through the home page were: You can look at the
different parts of Nascar at the top in the navigation bar. It shows pictures and most recent
events at the top. There are links to videos of races and articles by past Nascar drivers on the
left hand side. Live races can be watched from the site instead of on TV and Different results

Kim Porter!

from certain races and their schedules can be found using the top drop down menu. I think that
fact that Alexis has used this site before made her give a little less information about the overview of the homepage because she is familiar with the information on it. Megan gave quite a bit
more information on the things that she was seeing as well as the things that she did not know
what they meant. !
Tester 2 Report:!
Megan had a ton to say about the overview of the website. She listed a huge amount of things
that included the following about the site as she scrolled up and down the home page: You can
find out news about Nascar, can watch videos, look up schedules, can see results of races and
check out the drivers, see the drivers of the Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and Camping World Truck
Series, see the numbers of each racer can be found, can see chase grid and chase hub games,
can see fantasy, can check perfect grid, if you are a fan you can vote, follow live races, and experience the track, and lastly you can shop online and follow them on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, or email them. Megan also noted that there were a lot of ads a the bottom and
a lot of photos throughout the page. As Megan was talking out loud, she mentioned a lot of
things that she did not know what they meant. For example, she did not know what a grid is,
what nascar fantasy is, or what chase grid and chase hub games means. This really showed me
later in my testing how hard it is for a user to have a good experience if they do not know the
site or the terminology used. When trying to accomplish her tasks, it was much harder for
Megan to find what she was looking for than it was for Alexis because Alexis knew what these
things meant. !

Task 1: Determine the following information about the Perfect Chase Grid Fantasy Challenge.!
Tester 1:!
How many players have a perfect score?: To accomplish this task, Alexis clicked on the
chase tab in the navigation bar. After clicking on that tab, she then clicked on chase hub page
to see what it does. She then found a link that was called perfect chase grid challenge-check
your standing. She then scrolled down to the bottom of the page where it stated that her answer. When completing this task, Alexis used her fingers on the trackpad to scroll up and
down and did not use the arrow buttons on the keyboard. Her eye movement as well as head
movement consisted of a lot of back and forth on the navigation bar and I noticed that when
her eyes would move to a certain area to complete the task, her hand would also move the
mouse in the same direction that her eyes were moving. When clicking, instead of hitting enter, Alexis tousle tapped the trackpad on the Northwest computer.!
Answer: 3,678 perfect scores or 6%. !
Completed: Yes.!
When and where will the championship race be held?: To complete this task, Alexis again
used two fingers on the trackpad to scroll and find the answer. Alexis moused over the navigation bar to find the correct link. She eventually clicked on Schedule and then scrolled down
to where it said Championship round and the answer was right next to it. !
Answer: The Championship round is on Sunday, November 16th at 3pm in Homestead- Miami Speedway. !
Completed: Yes!
Tester 2:!
How many players have a perfect score?: Megan had a lot of head movement and eye
movement as well. She had a very difficult time finding the answers to the questions and when

she could not find them, she went to the search bar within the nascar.com site to try and find
them. When trying to complete this task, she could not find somewhere on the navigation bar
that would answer her question, so she typed it into the search bar in the top right hand corner. When she searched, she used the trackpad to move her mouse and used the enter keys
and the arrows on the keyboard to scroll for her answer. After still not being able to find it, she
searched under stats and began to count the number of people who had a perfect score. She
thought that the perfect score was 4,000 so she concluded that 8 people had a perfect score.
Since her answer was still wrong, she went back to the homepage and tried to find the answer
again but could still not find it. !
Answer: 4,000!
Completed: No!
When and where will the championship race be held?: For this task, instead of attempting
to find the answer on the navigation bar, Megan immediately went to type the answer into the
search box at the top right of the site. She typed in championship race and used the enter button to conduct the search. After the results came up, she used the up and down arrows on the
keyboard to find her answer. She could not find her answer so she went back to the navigation bar and clicked on schedule. After clicking on schedule, she then clicked nationwide series and used the control-f function to find her answer. She still did not find her answer. She
then clicked on the back button in the browser using her fingers on the trackpad. She clicked
print full schedule, and scrolled all the way to the bottom with the down arrow key where she
finally found the correct answer.!
Answer: The Championship round is on Sunday, November 16th at 3pm in Homestead- Miami Speedway.!
Completed: Yes!

Recommendations to improve UX for this task:!

The user experience of this site could really be improved. The navigation is a little in-consistent
on all of their pages. The biggest thing that needs to improve for user experience is making sure
that the sites search tool is useful. The results do not give the user what he or she expects.
When Megan was using the site and tired to use the search tool, none of the things that she
was actually searching for ever came up. Megan also had a typo in the search bar and the
search did not allow for typo-like options. !
Task 2: Determine the following information about driver Aric Almirola:!
Tester 1:!
What is his current rank?: To accomplish this task, Alexis went to the search bar and began
to search Arics name. After only typing the letter A into the search bar and hitting the search
button with her mouse, results began to show up. She used the trackpad on the mouse to
scroll down to where the site said stats. she then clicked a drop down menu and changed
race results to driver stats and then found her answer. !
Answer: 16!
Completed: Yes.!
What is his car number?: To complete this task, Alexis had remembered seeing his number
on a a picture of his car on the slideshow at the top of the page, so she used her trackpad on
her computer to scroll back up and clicked through the pictures with her mouse until she found
the correct answer. !
Answer: 43!
Completed: Yes!
What is the year he started racing?: Alexis scrolled back up to the top of her page using the
trackpad on her computer and began to look at the slideshow again. A link on the slideshow
was called Driver information so she skimmed over the rest of the page with her eyes and

eventually clicked on it. After clicking on it with her trackpad, the answer popped up in a small
box for her.!
Answer: 2007!
Completed: Yes!
What is the number of races he ran in 2010?: To complete this task, Alexis used the search
bar and searched his name followed by number of races in 2010 and still could not find
everything. She then she went back to the top of the navigation bar and clicked on drivers and
scrolled down using her mousepad. She looked for a total of 3 or 4 minutes before she gave
up on finding the answer. !
Answer: N/A!
Completed: No!
What was his rank in 2011?: Alexis used the search bar after trying to scroll up and down to
on the stats page to find his rank. After looking and searching with her eyes and moving her
mouse up and down multiple times, she could not find it. She could only find 2010 and 2012.!
Answer: N/A!
Completed: No!
Tester 2:!
What is his current rank?: Megan decided to take a different route to find the answer to this
question. This time, she used her trackpad and mouse to scroll over the drivers tab on the
navigation bar. She then clicked on all sprint cup series drivers. She then used the down arrow to scroll down until she found his name and his rank was listed below.!
Answer: 16!
Completed: Yes.!
What is his car number?: Megan found the answer to this question in the same way that she
found the last one. She used her trackpad and mouse to scroll over the drivers tab on the nav-

igation bar. She then clicked on all sprint cup series drivers. She then used the down arrow
to scroll down until she found his name and his number is pictured behind the picture shown
of him!
Answer: 43!
Completed: Yes!
What is the year he started racing?: Megan stayed on the same page as before titled all
sprint cup series drivers and clicked on the picture of Aric by using her mouse and hitting the
enter button on the keyboard. Clicking enter did not work for her so she then used the moused
to click on the picture. This still did not work, so Megan went to the top right hand corner of the
page and used the search bar to type in Arics name. She clicked on the first link that appeared with her mousepad and it brought her to his personal profile. She then scrolled down
using the down arrows on her keyboard until she found a stats section. She then used her
mouse and trackpad to click driver stats and still could not find the answer. She then began
to move her eyes around the page a lot to try and find the answer and eventually began to
scroll up using the up arrow. She found a link titled driver info at the top and clicked it with her
mouse. The information that she needed to finally came up as a pop up screen.!
Answer: 2007!
Completed: Yes!
What is the number of races he ran in 2010?: Megan ran into the same issue as Alexis did
here and at the task below. She could not find in the search box how many races he had ran
in 2010 and he could also not find it under the drivers tab on the navigation bar. She then
searched for a few minutes using the up and down arrows on the keyboard and titling her
head in confusion. She eventually stopped looking. !
Answer: N/A!
Completed: No!

Kim Porter!
Web Publishing

11!

What was his rank in 2011?: Again, Megan had the same issue as Alexis did. She searched
in both the search box, and went to the drivers tab and could only find the year before and the
year after 2011. She looked for about 3-4 minutes before asking if we could move on to the
next task.!
Answer: N/A!
Completed: No!
Recommendations to improve UX for this task:!
Both Megan and Alexis did not like the fact that every time they tried to use the search bar for
this task, it took them to articles that were not even close to related to the topic that they were
looking for. They felt that if this was changed, they may have been able to find more specific answers such as what his rank was in 2011. When searched, none of the articles that came up
were related to their searches.!
Task 3: Find the Mobil 1 Question of the week. Then:!
Tester 1:!
Determine what the question of the week is: To answer this question, Alexis first used her
mouse to skim over the tabs in the navigation bar. She could not find anything that looked like
the answer would be there and eventually after scrolling up and down the page a lot with her
trackpad decided to just type it into the search bar. After typing it in, she scrolled through the
possible answers swiping her mousepad down to make the page scroll. After clicking on the
correct link, she found a video that she began to watch that asked the answer to the question.!
Answer: Using the rear view mirrors, how much of it is you and how much of it is your spotter?!
Completed: Yes.!
Share the question with friends on Facebook: Alexis scrolled over the video with her
mouse and clicked the link on the video that said share on Facebook. A new tab then

Kim Porter!
Web Publishing

12!

opened to Facebook to share the story and she clicked on the Share Link tab. This was an
extremely easy task for Alexis because it is one of her favorite and most used sites. !
Answer: N/A!
Completed: Yes!

!
Tester 2:!
Determine what the question of the week is: Megan had a far easier and quicker experience with this task than Alexis did. Megan had decided to just go ahead and type into the
sites search bar immediately. She scrolled up and down using the arrows on her keyboard
until she found the answer to the question.!
Answer: Using the rear view mirrors, how much of it is you and how much of it is your spotter?!
Completed: Yes.!
Share the question with friends on Facebook: This part of the task was much more difficult
for Megan than it was for Alexis. Megan uses Facebook, but not very often. After clicking on
the video with her mouse, Megan paused the video and clicked the link to Facebook. When
the link re-directed her to a new page, she then became confused. She does not use Facebook very often so she was confused as to where this was going to post and who would be
able to have access to seeing it. She eventually just went ahead and clicked the share button. Out of habit, she tried to click enter instead of using her mouse but eventually had to use
her mouse to hit the button. !
Answer: N/A!
Completed: Yes!

Megan and Alexis both stated that for this task, they had wished that the question of the week
was not offered in the form of a video. They both said that it would have been nice to physically
see what the question was rather than having to listen to it. !
Task 4: Determine the following information about Nascars Production Assistant Internship!
Tester 1:!
The location of the job: Alexis scrolled all the way to the bottom of the page to the footer of
the site to find the answer to this task. She then used her trackpad on her laptop to click on
careers at the bottom of the page. A new tab opened with a place to type in keywords and
categories of a position. Alexis clicked down until she found the word intern and clicked on it
with her mouse. She did not see the correct internship listed, so she went to the search box
again at the top right and tried to search again. She searched and scrolled up and down the
page of links for the correct link and could not find it. She went back to the homepage and
scanned the navigation bar moving her eyes from left to right but still could not find it. !
Answer: N/A!
Completed: No.!
Software skills required: Since Alexis could not find the correct answer to the question
above, she could also not find the skills that were required for the position. !
Answer: N/A!
Completed: No!
Writing skills required: Again, Alexis not being able to find the correct job listing has also
hindered her success in finding the answer to this question as well. !

Tester 2:!
The location of the job: Megan did the same search process as Alexis and could not find the
correct job listing either. She searched the search box and scrolled to the bottom of the page

Megan and Alexis had both not been able to find anything for this task. They both stated that
they felt that having the career link be so far down at the bottom of the page and having to do an
extra search for the career once they clicked on the career link was more difficult than it needed
to be. They were also confused as to how when they searched under the internship drop down
menu, this specific internship did not come up. !

!
Task 5: Return to the Perfect Chase Grid Fantasy Challenge to determine if there are any
additional players with a perfect score. !
Tester 1: Alexis went to the navigation bar and ran her mouse over them from left to right, moving her eyes with the mouse. She then clicked on Fantasy and then chase grid challenge. She
concluded that there were no users that have any perfect scores anymore because there had
been a new race since then. !
Answer: Yes, perfect scores change depending on new races.!
Completed: Yes!
Tester 2: Megan also went to the navigation bar and found chase grid challenge under fantasy.
She scrolled down with the down arrow to see the 0 total perfect number and a percent perfect
of 0%. She was able to see at the top of the page that it stated The Contender Round results
are now posted! Check your picks to see if you still have a Perfect Grid. !
Answer: Megan was able to infer that perfect scores change after every race. !
Completed: Yes!
Recommendations to improve UX for this task:!
Both Megan and Alexis felt that this was one of the easiest taste that they were given because
they each found it within a few simple steps. The only thing mentioned was that they wished it

would be written somewhere to make it clear that this page will re-load after every new race that
occurs. !

Testing Conclusions!
Completion rate:!
My tests compare with the typical task completion rates of 78%. my task rates are very low.
Tester #1 had 50% (Alexis) and Tester #2 had a very low 35% (Megan). This just goes to show
that Alexis is much better at using the internet than Megan. Megan said she would consider herself to be a moderate user of the internet, but after doing my testing I would have to say that she
is very low experience. !
Similarities and differences:!
I have mentioned quite a few times the differences between my two testers Alexis and Megan.
During my testing, it was extremely clear which one of them was a high-experience user and a
low or moderate experience user. Megan had a very difficult time completing a lot of the tasks in
a quick amount of time whereas Alexis found the answers to the tasks in a matter of minutes.
Though Alexis already has experience with racing and has seen nascar.com and Megan has
not, i believe that these differences between them exist because Megan does not use the internet nearly as much as Alexis does. Alexis has more of an understanding of the navigation of the
internet and you can tell that she uses the internet more often because she did a lot less skimming the page with her eyes and tilting of her head than Megan did. I did not really see any similarities between at all. They didnt use the same browser, did not scroll and click the same way,
did not have the same eye and head movements, and took different routes on completing their
tasks.
