WORKSHOPS / HANDS ON EXERCISES:

TELECOMMUNICATION AND INTERNET
Exercise 1- 01 Broadband Internet Access (group assignment)

Teacher asked to create several groups of students which 1 group contains of 3 students.
Give each group a topic related to Telecommunication and Internet and asked them to search, analyze,
discuss and present summary of it on 1 page of paper and then share by communicate with other groups.
Teacher allowed for Q & A from other group to group which is presented.
Collect all result to the Teacher for marking.
This exercise can be conduct for 50 minutes 1 hour 40 minutes.
Teacher ended this exercise by given a summary for all activities.
Suggested topics, such as: Ethernet, LAN, Wireless LAN, Virtual Private Network, Intranet, Switches,
Routers, Client Server and Broadband Internet access or related topics.

Example:

BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS

Broadband Internet access, often shortened to just broadband, is high data rate Internet accesstypically
contrasted with dial-up access over a modem.
Dial-up modems are generally only capable of a maximum bitrate of 56 kbit/s (kilobits per second) and require
the full use of a telephone linewhereas broadband technologies supply at least double this bandwidth and
generally without disrupting telephone use.
Although various minimum bandwidths have been used in definitions of broadband, ranging up from 64 kbit/s
up to 1.0 Mbit/s, the 2006 OECD report is typical by defining broadband as having download data transfer rates
equal to or faster than 256 kbit/s, while the United States FCC, as of 2008, defines broadband as anything
above 768 kbit/s.The trend is to raise the threshold of the broadband definition as the marketplace rolls out
faster services.
Data rates are defined in terms of maximum download because several common consumer broadband
technologies such as ADSL are "asymmetric"supporting much slower maximum upload data rate than
download.
"Broadband penetration" is now treated as a key economic indicator.
