B.E. (8th SEM) Assignment -1
Geo Tech Engg II (CE-801)
Date of Assign:
Date of Submission:
Define Ultimate bearing Capacity. net Ultimate bearing Capacity and net
Q.1 safe bearing Capacity
2 marks
Ans. A) Ultimate bearing Capacity :The Ultimate bearing capacity is
the gross pressure at the base of the foundation at which the soil fails in
shear
b)net Ultimate bearing Capacity; The net Ultimate bearing capacity
is the net increase in pressure at the base of foundation that causes
shear failure of soil.It is equal to the gross pressure minus overburden
pressure.
qnu =qu-yDf
c) net safe bearing Capacity: It is the net soil pressure which can be
safely appliedto the soil considering only shear failure.It is obtained by
dividing the net ultimate bearing capacity by a suitable factor of
safety.Thus
Qns =qnu/F
Q.2

Q.3

Write the expression for a) immediate settlement of cohesive soil by

SCHLEICHER
b) the terzaghis bearing capacity equation
c) ultimate bearing capacity equation by PRANDTLs ANALYSIS
Ans. A)Si=qB((1-2)/Es)I

5marks

b) qu = cNc + qoNq+.5YBNy
c) qu=5.14cu+yDf valid only for footing with perfectly smooth base in
contact with soil
Write the classification of settlement of foundation under loads
5 marks
Ans.
1.Immediate or elastic settlement(Si)-It takes place during or
immediately after construction of the structure.
2.Consolidation Settlement(Sc)-This component of the settlement occurs
due to gradual expulsion of water from the voids of soil.
3.Secondary consolidation settlement(Ss)-This component of the
settlement is due to secondary consolidation.this settlement occurs
after completion of the primary consolidation
Thus total settlement is given by S=Si+Sc+Ss

Q.4

Q.8

5 marks
Write the assumption used in terzaghis bearing capacity theory.
Ans. 1. The base of footing is rough
2.The footing is laid at a shallow depthi.e Df=< B
3.The shear strength of soil above base of footing is neglected.The soil
above the base is replaced by uniform surchargw YDf .
4.The load on the footing is vertical and is uniformly distributed.
5.The footing is long i.e L/B ratio is infinite,where B is the width and L is
the length of the footing.
6.The shear strength of soil is governed by Mohr Coulomb equation.
Write the limitation of plate load test?
Ans. (i) It has limited depth of influence. It could only give the bearing capacity 5 marks
of soils with depth up to two times the diameter of plate.
(ii) It may not provide information on the potential for long term consolidation
of foundation soils. (iii) There is scale effect as the size of test plate is smaller
than actual foundation.

(iv) To gain access to test position, excavation is carried out which causes significant
ground disturbance. The change in ground stress leads to the change of soil properties
which the test is planned to investigate.

Determine the net ultimate bearing capacity of the footing in que 11. If
Q.12 a)the water table rise to the level of the base
b)the water table rises to the ground surface
c)the water table is 1 m below the base

b) W=.50. the surcharge q is also reduced as the effective stress is
reduced.Thus

c)W is obtained by linear interpolation

Write the effect of water table on bearing capacity.

Q.13 Ans. Ultimate bearing capacity has been developed on the assumption 5marks
that the
water table is located at a great depth.If the water table is located close
to the
foundation,the bearing capacity equation needs
modification
CASE I Water table located above the base of the footing fig a
The effective surcharge is reduced as the effective weight below the
water table is equal
to the submerged unit.
Therefore
q =Dwy +ay
Where Dw = depth of water table below the ground surface
a =height of water table above the base of footing
above equation can be written as, substituting a =Df-Dw,
q =yDf + (y-y)Dw

CASE II Water table located at a depth Zw2 below fig b

In this case, soil above the base of the footing is moist and below base may be fully or
partially submerged. If the water table is at the base then the bearing capacity equation is
written as:
Qult = cNc + Df Nq + B N RW2 - (3)
If the water table is at a depth B below the case of the footing then the bearing capacity is
not affected and no correction is required. If the water table is at an intermediate depth say,
ZW2 below the base of the footing where 0<ZW2<B, then the bearing capacity equation is
Written as:
Qult = cNc + Df Nq + [1/2 ZW2 + sub (B ZW2)]N

Qult = cNc + Df Nq + B N RW2 - (4)

Where, RW2 can be obtained from the equation:
ZW2 + sub(B ZW2) = B RW2
ZW2 + sub/ (B ZW2) = BRW2
ZW2 + B ZW2 = BRW2
*ZW2 + 0.5B = BRW2
BRW2 = 0.5(ZW2 + B)
RW2 = 0.5(1 + ZW2/B) - (5)
When the water table at base, ZW2 = 0 and RW2 = 0.5 and when ZW2 = B, RW2 = 1. This
means when water table is at base the weight term in the bearing capacity equation is
reduced by half and when water table at great depth ( i.e. greater than width of foundation
below the base of foundation) water table will have no influence in the bearing capacity.
