Depression
Connected to School-
1. What relationship is there between risks of depression and how connected teens
feel to their school?
 The more connected a student is to their school, the less likely they are to
become depressed.
2. What could make someone feel very connected to school?
 Someone could become connected to school if they are involved with the
school, programs, and people. One would have friends at their school or
could be in the different clubs. That is how you could be connected to
school.
3. What could make someone feel disconnected?
 If someone is disconnected then they are probably not really involved
with their school. They don’t pay attention in class, participate in no after
school activities, and keep to themselves.

1. What are brain chemicals called?
 Brain chemicals are neurotransmitters.
2. What are these brain chemicals responsible for?
 Neurotransmitters are responsible for our emotional state.
3. What happens to neurotransmitters when depression happens?
 Depression occurs when these chemicals are not delivered properly
between the brain cells. This disrupts communication.
4. What can be done about depression?
 There are many forms of treatments, but the most common is
medication. They can strengthen weak signals or improve their ability to
process the signals.

1. Is there only one thing in a person’s life that causes depression?
 No, there is often a combination of things that causes one to be
depressed.
2. What are the 5 common factors involved in depression?
 The 5 main common factors are a family history, trauma and stress,
pessimistic personality, personal physical conditions, and other
psychological disorders.
3. What does a pessimistic personality mean?
 It is the opposite personality of an optimist. Pessimistic people have a
negative outlook upon their life and life itself.
4. Are men or women most likely to become depressed? Why?
 Women are almost twice as more likely to become depressed. This higher
risk is due to the various changes in the hormones.

1. Why does anxiety and depression occur together?
 The type of anxiousness one may develop while depressed is usually a
type of fear. If they have lost someone or something significantly
terrifying happen to the person, then they would experience a type of
fear anxiety. Always on end, always afraid. Almost like when a person has
had too much caffeine and they are just on the edge and really irritable.
2. Is it treatable? How?
 Yes, it is treatable with therapy and/or medication.
3. What stress managing activity did you try?
 I tried visualization.
4. Did this activity help you manage stress?
 I am not so sure about managing stress, but it did help to calm me down.
When I am working on school work I can get anxious, but the visualizing
really helped!

Suicide in Depression-
1. Is there any way to tell whether or not someone is going to attempt suicide?
 Yes, if you know and understand the risk factors and the symptoms a
person may be giving off, then yes you can tell if someone is thinking
about suicide.
2. Is there a connection between depression and suicide?
 Yes, sometimes when people get really depressed they can start to think
of what importance they are to this world. They also may just be in
misery, so they kill themselves.

 The most common cause are mental disorders.

 The other six are depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, alcoholism,
drug abuse and financial difficulties.

 Teenagers and adults under 35 have suicide as their leading cause of
death.
4. What does Abrahamic religions mean?
 Abrahamic religions includes the three primary monotheistic religions in
the world: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

 An offense towards God is basically to sin.
6. What does sanctity of life mean?
 It is the belief that human life is sacred, and is something that should not
be wasted.

 Their economy has done nothing but fall since 1990, that is 20 years.
2. What are the differences in the suicide statistics worldwide as to those in Russia?
 Men in Russia are now six times more likely to commit suicide. At highest
risk are the men ages 45-54. Russian women are most likely to commit
suicide after the age of 75.
3. Why do you think suicide rates in Russia increased After the last year of the
Soviet government in Russia?
 Well when the Soviet Government in Russia ended, the economy fell. For
all the businessmen in Russia this put a big burden on their lives, because
now they had to figure out how to support their families in a falling
country. Around the ages of 45-54 is when businessmen are at the top of
their game, because they have been in the business long enough to know
what they are doing, without being too old to do it. When the stress
became to much for them to deal with, they just ended their life.
