Six Little Known Methods To Evaluate Your Econs Essay and ACE it immediately
Due to the steep transition phrase from Secondary School to JC, you face difficulties in
answering Economics Essay questions as this subject is very new to you and you also do not
understand the answering requirement for JC Economics Essay. As a result, you often fail to
score above 13 marks (Passing Mark) for your essays.
To compound the problem, the requirement of Evaluation Skills or Thinking Skills for
essays and case studies is the number one problem for all JC students as they typically do
not know:
1. Why to evaluate;
2. What and how to evaluate;
As such, I hope by shedding some insights on evaluation methods, I can help you to pass
your econs essay / case study immediately!
If you encounter any difficulties understanding the following methods, please feel free to
drop me a call at 97299250 or email me at jeff@aceyourecons.sg.
Ready for the mind blowing methods? Here we go!

Why to evaluate?
Before we go into the juicy part, always find out the intention of having such a requirement.
The compulsory requirement of evaluation skills in your essay / case study is because MOE
realizes that A level candidates 10 years ago are exceptionally good at one thing
memorizing ten year series model answer and scoring A and this is not what they want!
With this compulsory requirement, this tests the candidates ability to:
1. Provide his/her insights into the economics essay/case studies;
2. Identify underlying assumptions and challenges it;
And most importantly, MOE wants to stop producing robot students who can regurgitate
everything but know nothing.

What and how to evaluate?

Many school teachers have failed to provide a system for identifying the regular patterns
of evaluation. Many just go on and on teaching students to be creative without providing
them a means to do so. Why? Because they simply dont have the experience to do so! With
my 10 years of tutoring experience, I have classified them under these six main categories:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Weighing of important factor;

Potential conflict;
Depends upon the situation of the economy;
Time lag;
Assumptions challenged;
Country Specification.

Students under my regular program will receive detailed guidance and explanation on how
these six are used regularly as a form of evaluation. To simply showcase the usage of one of
these six, lets consider the following question:
Discuss the economics tools available to a government to reduce high food prices.
[15m]
Candidates are expected to identify subsidies, price ceiling and food imports as economic
tools immediately. To stay focused in this ebook, let us consider that your basic analysis for
all these three are complete and balanced and now, you are on your way to provide
evaluation.
Weighing of important factor: Subsidy vs Price Ceiling vs Food Import which is most
important and why?
Suggested Evaluation: among the three measures, Subsidy to food producers is the most
important factor as it encourages food producers to invest in food production technologies in
the long term and does not create problems like shortage/black market by Price Ceiling and
displace local food producers with foreign imports.
The catch here is:
1. No definite answers (so long as you can substantiate your argument, it is fine);
2. Stating your stand is the most important. Simply listing the limitations of Price
Ceiling and food imports are not conclusive enough.
3. Note that evaluation requirement is invisible in the question and yet compulsory.

Not enough?
Out of the six method, the above method is just tip of an iceberg. And you will be
surprised that all my students are trained to use all six of the methods to apply on this single
question!
