Recognizing Curses

A curse is the reverse of “to bless.” On the human level, to wish harm or catastrophe. On the
2 divine, to impose judgment. (Zondervan All-in-One Bible Reference Guide). As we look at foun-
dational scriptures we see that curses began with the fall of man. “To the woman he said, “I will
2 greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire
3 will be for your husband, and he will rule over you. To Adam he said, “Because you listened to
your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ’You must not eat of it,’
3 “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your
3 life. (Genesis 3:16-17).
Adam and Eve received devastating judgment upon themselves. Curses were the result upon the

human race because of this fall. It is the desire of many to have a loving, healthy and blessed fam-
ily. Yet, we can look at our family tree and see the breakdown of God-ordained family struc-
ture.
The good news is that God is full of great compassion and mercy. “The Lord is long-suffering
and slow to anger, and abundant in mercy and loving-kindness, forgiving iniquity and transgres-
sion; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the chil-
dren, upon the third and fourth generation.” Num14:18.
God has paid the price for us all to be free from curses
of any kind through Jesus Christ. However, we must
appropriate and gain complete freedom and deliverance
through repentance and renunciation of our own sins,
sins of our parents and forefathers.
Do you recognize a continual pattern of defeat and con-
stant failure? Is there a generational cycle of sicknesses
and diseases? Did you or your forefathers become in-
volved in occultism of any kind? Do you constantly deal
with anger and fits of rage? Is there a history of untimely From generation to generation, blessings
deaths and suicides? History of abuse of any kind? or curses spring forth!
Generational Curses
The definition of a generational curse is iniquity and transgression that ruled in a particular
generation of family members and pass on to the next generation; affecting the next generation
spiritually and physically. These grievous and detestable sins of unrepentant parents or forefa-
thers opened the door for the enemy to continue his work upon the next generation. For
example look at the pattern of divorce in families and our nation as a whole. The United
States has one of the highest rate of divorce. When sin and iniquity take root in the heart of
people it perpetuates itself to the next generation of people. Including Christians that have
allowed sin and iniquity to have dominion in their lives. Have we as a people of God allowed
the enemy to deceive us? Where there is sin and iniquity, there is deceit and spiritual blind-
ness. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people perish for a lack of knowledge.” It is God’s will that we are
knowledgeable and have a clear understanding of His Word.
 Disobedience and Sin Resulting in Curses
The most common thing that brings
about curses in one’s life is sin and
disobedience to God. Christians
and non-believers give Satan an
open invitation to operate in their
lives or family through sinning
knowingly or unknowingly. As
Christian parents we have a re-
sponsibility to live holy lives. If
righteousness is not chosen the
results can become so devastating
to a family. “If a person sins and
commits any of these things which
are forbidden to be done by the
commandments of the Lord,
though he does not know it, yet he
is guilty and shall bear his iniquity.”
(Lev. 5:17).
Look at the case of Cain and Abel.
Cain’s heart was not pure before
God, instead his heart was bent on
living wickedly. He already had ha-
tred toward his brother, Abel. The
rejection of Cain and his offering
were not about what he brought to
sacrifice, but the condition of Cain’s
heart was not right before God. So
it is today, many think that their
worship is acceptable to God, even
while they are living a wicked life.
Not so according to scripture. “The
sacrifice of the wicked is an abomi-
nation to the Lord, but the prayer of
the upright is His delight.” Prov.
15:8. God knows the very motives
and intents of our heart. Abel’s life
is a representation of living right-
eously by faith. Cain was deceived
not understanding that God sees
everything in our
heart.
“The sacrifice of

how much more
when he brings it
with wicked in-
tent! God gave
Cain an opportu-
nity to get his heart right, instead
Cain chose to rebel against God.
Cain killed his brother in the field.
Listen to what the Lord says to Cain.
“So now you are cursed from the
earth, which has opened its mouth to
receive your brother’s blood from
your hand. When you till the
ground, it shall no longer yield its
strength to you. A fugitive and a
vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
Gen. 4:11,12.
This curse was initiated upon Cain
due to his sin. A vagabond is a per-
son that aimlessly
wanders from place
to place; very sor-
rowful and poverty
stricken with no fixed
address. We can
have the blessing of
God by choosing obe-
dience and turning
away from sin.

Disobedience and Sin Resulting in Curses

Consider the case of Achan in Joshua, chapter seven. Achan involved himself with a cursed thing. By disobedience and rebelling
against God’s instructions, he brought a curse upon himself, his family and the nation of Israel. Here we see the curse infiltrating
devastation, removing the protection of God. The Israelites were explicitly warned not to take the items of this other nation.
Why did God command this? These items had demonic presence upon them and were considered cursed. The Israelites could
not win a battle against the enemy if they had an accursed item among their possessions. Let’s look at some modern day exam-
ples of people bringing cursed items into their home and experience defeat. Many people travel or rather purchase items of
other countries that are cursed due to demonic incantations pronounced upon the items. These items are displayed and used for
interior decorations of their home. For example, graven images of demon gods, cultural mask, African voodoo mask, framed
photos and pictures that are demonic representations of someone’s false religion. This is a physical form of idolatry that can be
seen with your natural eyes, but what about the idolatry in your heart. The worship of things, such as cars, vehicles, houses,
money, possessions, people often sets on the throne of people’s heart. God is our King and He is the only one that should sat
on the throne of our heart. “Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but
thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a curse thing.” (Deuteronomy 7:26). If you want your life and
home to be free from curses, obey God. Greed and deception took over Achan, he thought that his undercover sin would go
undetected. Achan paid a high price for his disobedience, it was death for him and his family. As believers we must not allow
material things or people become first place in our lives. Do you need to clean out any cursed things in your home?

Lord, Open My Spiritual Eyes

As believers, we need to take inventory
of our lives. Place your dependence
upon the Holy Spirit and ask the Lord
to reveal to you any deception of the
enemy. God is faithful, it is His will that
we are not deceived, but enlightened to
the truth of His Word. We, as believ-
ers must know and understand that we
are required to walk in total obedience
to God. Yes, we must make ourselves
accountable to God at all times. He is
omniscient, He knows everything about
you. God knows our every action and

intent of the heart. There is no such thing
as secret sin, God sees it and so does Sa-
tan. In fact the enemy uses sin to gain a
foothold in a person’s life. God blesses
obedience. Satan seeks to devour the
believer through sin and disobedience.
Our standard of holiness and
righteous living must be in agree-
ment with the Word of God.
Walking in the Spirit closes the
door to Satan. As believers, me
must close any door that gives
access to the enemy. “The lamp

of the body is the eye. Therefore, when
your eye is good, your whole body also is
full of light. But when your eye is bad, your
body also is full of darkness. Therefore
take heed that the light which is in you is
not darkness. If then your whole body is
full of light, having no part dark,
the whole body will be full of light,
as when the bright shining of a
lamp gives you light.” (Luke 11:34
-36). May God grant you spiritual
understanding and enlightenment
that you will know what is the
hope of His calling.

Obedience Connected to Blessings
Although we no longer live under
the law, God will not violate the
principles of His Word. His pre-
cepts for an overflow of blessings
are directly connected to the be-
liever’s obedience to Him and walk-
ing in the reverential fear of the
Lord. The following scriptures
confirms it:
Deuteronomy 28:2 - “And all
these blessings shall come on
thee, and overtake thee, if
thou shalt hearken unto the
voice of the Lord thy God.”
Psalm 128:1, 2 - “Blessed is every
one that feareth the Lord; that
walketh in His ways. For thou
shalt eat the labour of thine
hands: happy shalt thou be,
and it shall be well with thee.”
Deut. 11:26-28 - “Behold, I set
before you this day a blessing
and a curse; a blessing, if ye

ing a curse for us, for it is written
[in the Scriptures], cursed is
everyone who hangs on a tree (is

Let’s begin with the small things that
God asks us to do. Often we think
the small things are so insignificant and
we refuse or neglect to do them.
However, when we refuse to obey
even in the smallest of things that God
asks us to do, we’ve missed a stepping
stone to higher things in the Lord. If
God cannot trust us with the small
things, why would he entrust to us
things of greater significance? I’m re-
minded of the story of Jesus preaching
to a great crowd of people, they were
pushing and crowding on Him, so Je-
sus asked Peter to launch his boat a
short distance into the water, so he
could preach more effectively to the
people and Peter obeyed. Therefore,
the people were blessed to hear the
good news of the gospel. What if
Peter had not obeyed? What if Peter
had said, Jesus do it yourself, you got
when we appropriate the promises of
God by confessing with our mouth and
believing with our heart, it is the same
with breaking curses and releasing the
blessings of God. We must appropriate
the promises of God to break the curses
through repentance and renunciation.
Asking God to cancel every curse acti-
vated in our life or family.
Christ became our Substi-
tute and took every curse
upon Himself. We have the

We must take the initiative
to work against you and your family. “For
we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers,
against the rulers of the darkness of this
world, against spiritual wickedness in high
places. Wherefore take unto you the
whole armour of God, that ye may be able
to withstand in the evil day, and having
done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:12, 13.
A battle is going on between the Kingdom
of God and Satan. As saints of God, we
must always walk with the full armor of
God. Indifference, unbelief, complacency,
luke-warmness, walking in carnality will

the power. Here we learn the impor-
tance of obedience, submission to
authority, and humility. It paves the
way for God to release His blessings
into our lives. Does that mean we
won’t have difficulties, trials and tribu-
lations in this life? No. However,
God is ever present to release His
blessings into our lives. He says, “ I
know the plans I have for you,
plans to prosper you and not to
harm you, plans to give you hope
and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11).
I declare blessing and prosperity over
you today as you walk in the divine
will and purpose of God. No weapon
that the enemy has formed against
you will prosper. God covers you
with divine protection, deliverance
and blessings!

Will you take a stand for a new beginning?
“Behold, I will do a new thing; now
it shall spring forth; shall ye not know
it?” (Isaiah 43:19).

Remember: The most important
thing that God requires of us is obedi-
ence to Him. To gain and maintain
your deliverance and blessings are
submission and obedience to God.
Step 1: Submit: set your heart to live
totally and completely for God. By submis-
sion and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Step 2: Humility: humble yourself un-
der the mighty hand of God, letting go of
all pride. Rebellion is as the sin of witch-
craft.
Step 3: Repentance: repent of your
sins, also for the sins of your parents and
forefathers.
Step 4: Renounce: meaning to not only
repent, but turn completely away from
them. Sin should no longer have dominion
in your life.
Step 5: Acknowledge: Jesus is now
