Description:

A letterhead designed to be used for official business conducted by a

company.

Date:

8 Nov 2015

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130-04 // Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:

Adobe Illustrator // Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a letterhead.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.

Process:

To make the headphones, I just used basic shapes in Adobe Illustrator,

with a little help from the pathfinder tools. To make the curve that connects
the two speakers of the headphones, I used quite a few processes. I first
took a circle and expanded the stroke so that it became its own shape,
and then used a rectangle on top of it, along with the minus front tool, and
cut off some of the bottom of the shape. Then, I took one solid circle and
overlapped it with another solid circle in an almost eclipse shape to get the
waining crescent shape for the inside of the headphones. I used ruler guides
to help make sure that the design was uniform in its width throughout the
letterhead.

Adobe InDesign // Adobe Illustrator // Adobe Photoshop

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate four quality images. One should be clipped in Photoshop and
text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs,
headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:

I used Adobe Illustrator to create the logo used, which is shaped like food.
Then, I created a simple layout in Adobe InDesign. I planned to remove .25
from each side of the page after printing, so I made sure that there were
guides place at those dimensions. I then had to calculate where the two
folds would go on the layout given that I would be taking a total of .5 off of
the total width of a traditional 8.511 tri-fold brochure layout. For the image
of the Otai, I used photoshop to take the background out. Then, in InDesign,
I used the Text Wrap tool to force the text to go around the image instead of
over top of it.

If you are eating, you are going

to be thirsty. Wash down your
delicious Musubi with our specialty
drink, Otai. It is a traditional
Polynesian fruit drink, made with
watermelon, pineapple, coconut,
and evaporated milk.
Of course, if you dont fancy a
cool, refreshing, made
fresh multiple times
daily, natural fruit
drink, and then
weve got you.
Enjoy from our wide
selection of fountain
drinks, as well as
our many drafts and
brews on tap.
We also have
a generous
selection of
local beers
and sodas,
in case a
brand name
is just too
main-stream
for you.

Last year our visionary owner Brian Goodhue

had an idea that would redene the way that
beach-goer food was seen. Not wanting to
deal with having more than a few menu items,
Brian decided it was time to make one thing
really well.
A Musubi.
And that is just what he did. He opened up his
very own restaurant in scenic Virginia Beach,
Virginia and has been serving the surrounding
community and tourists since.
Musubi Nation is a simple place where good
people can get great food at an affordable
price. Come join us and get a small glimpse of

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then
incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate
layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process:

I designed this using only Adobe Photoshop. First, I took this image myself,
utilizing the Rule of Thirds and focusing on the foreground. Then I edited
the image by itself using different layers. I even took the Spot Healing tool
and used that to remove a wooden structure in the background. I then used
multiple text boxes to achieve the desired result of the way the text is placed
and sized. The brick colored embellishments are actually a font I accessed
in Photoshop, Bodoni Ornaments Regular

Leadership Conference
Do you want to have the competitive edge in business?
Come learn how at Vouant Communications annual
Graduate Leadership Conference.

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep
links in InDesign intact.

Vouant Communications is devoted to helping tomorrows

leaders gain essential leadership skills in the workplace.
During this dynamic three-day seminar, attendees will meet
with top executives of Vouant Communications to discuss
breakthrough leadership techniques, while cultivating
attributes of leadership that will market to any employer.

Process:

Conference is available to graduating seniors.

Space is limited.

First, I made a few sample sketches of various ideas and designs on a

sheet of paper. Then, in Adobe InDesign, I actually created a hybrid by using
certain elements from different designs. I adjusted the opacity of the solid
color blocks to add depth and frame the elements of the page. I also used
white rectangles to create the diagonal lines that can be seen repeated
throughout the design.

Logos
Description:

Three variations of a logo designed, using vectors, for a business.

Date:

1 Nov 2015

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130-04 // Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal

image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use
previous designs.
Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo
appeals most to them.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator
pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use
an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the
image before submitting.)

Process:

I used a different color to set Cat- apart from -harsis and emphasize the
first part. I increased the size of the first letter so that I could go through
and add ears and a nose to give the illusion of it being the cats head. I use
the pathfinder tools to put a curve on the bottoms of the ears so that they
would flow with the curve of the letter C. I used the Direct Selection tool to
manipulate the anchor points and curvature of a perfect circle to achieve the
shape that ended up being the nose.

Description:

Multiple images blended together to form one composite image.

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130-04 // Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message

Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple
elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme
word(s)

Process:

I first placed the image of the mountains, then brought in the image of the
temple and used a mask and a brush to remove the hard edges and sky. I
also used the brush to help blend and soften the image of the temple so that
the mountain would just barely show through. I then put a grunge texture
over the whole image, and then added the text of the verse. I emphasized
Come, Mountain, and Lord in the text to help centralize the connection to
the images. I then added the tree trunk texture over the rest of the image,
using another mask to help remove that layers effects from over the temple
image.

TextWrangler // Adobe Photoshop // Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.

Process:

I used TextWrangler to create the html document. I made sure to indent each
part properly so that going through to edit specific parts was much faster and
easier. I then linked an image of my logo into my html document, as well as
a link to my blog post about this particular logo from Project 5. I then added
a link to a css style sheet. This style sheet was pre-made for the course, but
I went through and changed certain visual aspects, like the placement of
certain elements and the colors of all the elements on the page. I also used
a website that validates html and css style sheets to make sure that both my
html and css documents were valid and that the coding was readable for
the computer.

Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and
audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs,
including Photoshop.

Process:

I created this entirely in Microsoft Word. Color was a principle that I was
determined to use in this project. I first tried pulling a color form the donuts,
but soon found that using the color wheel provided from the Visual Focus
textbook was incredibly helpful in picking the right color scheme. I later
went back and lightened up the color scheme and rearranged the elements,
adding a few more for more of a picnic feel.

Description:

A set of four logos designed to promote a band.

Date:

6 Dec 2015

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130-04 // Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a set of four designs similar in style.

Take one and apply different colors to it to create a stained glass effect.
One of the logos must be able to be used side-by-side/top-to-bottom in an
almost continuous strand, or mirrored.

Process:

I used Adobe Illustrator to create shapes, using the basic shape tools as
well as the pen tool. I also used different forms of the same font to maintain
uniformity, but to inspire indviduality among the four logos.
