Guidelines for Thesis Writers

A student enrolling in thesis writing must have:


finished all academic requirements of their respective programs
passed the comprehensive examination
Student must submit a list of three (3) research topics in his/her field of
specialization, which will be evaluated by the program coordinator.
3. Approved topic will be discussed with the student, after which, an adviser will be
assigned.
4. Student goes to the prospective adviser for the acceptance of the advisorship.
Adviser signs an acceptance slip.
5. Upon acceptance by the adviser, student consults and works with the adviser in
preparing the research proposal. Both the adviser and student have to sign the
consultation form every time the advisee consults with the adviser. The
consultation form has to be submitted to the program coordinator at the end of
every school term for proper notification on advisers consultation fees to the
Business Office.
6. The proposal should contain the first three chapters and a partial bibliography.
7. The proposal, which is properly endorsed by the adviser, will then be given to the
reading panel (3). The student personally delivers the manuscripts to the panel
members and gets the acceptance slip, which he/ she submits to the program
coordinator.
8. The panel will be given at least one week (1) to read the proposal. Thus, a
proposal evaluation meeting will be scheduled within ten days after the
distribution of the proposal.
9. A student in Thesis 1 is expected to defend his/her proposal within the semester
he/she enrolled Thesis 1. However, the minimum requirement to pass Thesis 1 is
the approval of a research topic and the acceptance of an adviser.
10. Incorporation of suggestions and corrections done during the proposal meeting is
a prerequisite to the final approval of the proposal. Student has to include a
summary of changes, indicating the pages where changes have been made. A copy
of the approved proposal is submitted to the program coordinator for office file
and reference during the defense.
11. The student may gather data only after the approval of his/her proposal.
Endorsement letter for administering tests may be secured from the Program
Coordinator at the Department of Graduate Studies Office.
12. Continuity. Only after the thesis proposal is approved by the adviser, program
coordinator, and department head dean may the student enroll in Thesis II. He/she
shall remain enrolled therein at every term (regular semesters and summer
periods), up to and including the final defense. Any major interruption of thesis
writing should be covered by a written request for a leave of absence for a
specific duration, endorsed by the adviser, noted by the program coordinator, and
approved by the Department Head.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Thesis Adviser and the Panel Members of the Thesis
Committee
A. Duties and Responsibilities of the Thesis Adviser
1. Guides the advisee in defining and refining the research problem and helps the
advisee arrive at a solution to the problem by:
a.. drawing out advisees analytical skills and by tapping advisees creative potentials
b. showing a clear direction, a logical organization and a proper interpretation of the
research work.
c. cautioning the advisee to stay within the bounds of her/his academic inquiry,
her/his scholastic competence, and the accepted norms fro thesis writing.
2. assumes over all responsibility regarding the total integrity of the thesis / research
work i.e. accuracy, veracity, genuineness of content and the like; that the
researcher himself/herself has actually prepared and written the research paper.
3. Makes himself/herself available to the advisee for regular consultations so as to:
a. check on the progress of the work.
b. carefully read the materials submitted by the advisee for critique or correction.
See to it that the institutionally adopted thesis from and style are complied with.
4. Builds a climate of acceptance characterized by a supportive relationship with the
advisee by:
a. being a source of encouragement and assistance
b. stimulating the advisees critical thinking and scholarly interests so that the advisee
may finish the work within reasonable time.
5. Evaluates the over all quality of the research paper by:
a. seeing to it that all the revisions suggested by the thesis committee are incorporated
b. endorsing the thesis for defense.
6. During the defense, he / she gives moral support to the advisee by
a. clarifying questions raised by the panel members
b. coming to the aid of the advisee when conflict of ideas /clash of opinions arise.
c. taking down the suggestions/ corrections given by the panel members.
7. After the defense, he/she assists the advisee in refining the theis by
a. seeing to it that the suggestions/ corrections given in the defense are incorporated
b. editing the final papers as to the mechanics of writing.
8. Over all, the adviser serves as the link or conduct between the advisee, the panel
members and the Graduate Programs office.
B. Duties and responsibilities of the Panel Member
1. reads thoroughly the research papers and evaluates it as to:
a. whether the problem is properly identified/analyzed, and answered
b. whether the research design, methodology, approaches were adequately followed
c. whether the data on the literary selections were adequately treated/interpreted

2. Attends and participates in the deliberation/meetings and points out positive aspects
as well as inaccuracies and insufficient treatment of the research paper.
3. Observes the groups decision on suggestions brought up during the research
proposal deliberations, the reading committee evaluation, and the oral defense.
4. During the defense, he/she:
a. asks the candidate questions about the research
b. gives suggestions/modifications about the points raised by the candidate
c. makes the candidate feel at ease by eliciting what the candidate knows rather than what
he/she does not
d. gives constructive criticism
5. Over all, the panel member renders final judgment about the acceptability of the
research paper in the light of its organization, form, style, mechanics and grammar,
before affixing his/her signature for approval. He/she sees to it that the research paper has
met the established standards and requirements for a thesis specially its scholarly quality.
Oral Defense Procedures
1. Prayer
2. Introduction of the candidate, adviser and panelists by the program
coordinator
3. Summary of the investigation/study by the candidate
4. Interrogation by the panelists
5. Modes of conducting the interrogation
a. 2 rounds of 15 minute question and answer by each panelist
b. Free wheeling: each panelist will ask his questions and follow up
questions may be asked by the other panelists
6. Questions to be asked will be sequential following the order of the
problems, though cross references may be done in the process of
questioning. Panelists with questions in the first chapters will ask the
question first.
7. After the interrogation is completed, suggestion for improvement of the
manuscript will be done in consensus.
8. Deliberation by panelists and the Program Coordinator in the presence of
the adviser
9. Comments and suggestions on the technical aspects of the manuscript such
as format, typographical error or grammar should be written down and
given to the candidate.
10. Comments/corrections and suggestions given during the oral defense
should be noted down by both the adviser and the program coordinator,
which will be summarized and given to the reading committee for final
evaluation of the manuscript
11. Suggestions made during the oral defense are FINAL No additional
changes in the content and incorporations should be required after the
defense.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Program Coordinator


in Thesis Meetings
1. He presides over the:
a.. Research proposal deliberations
b. Reading/advisory committee evaluation, and
c. Oral Evaluation
2. Decides together with the committe on the acceptability of:
a. proposal
b. Thesis draft, and
c. Final Thesis
3. During the defense, he sees to it that:
a. the atmosphere is cordial and wholesome;
b. the proceedings are conducted in a systematic, orderly, and ethical manner, and
all the rules of the oral defense are observed by all concerned;
c. conflicts of ideas/clashes of opinions that may arise during the defense are
resolved; and the result of the oral defense is properly announced.
4. After the defense, he oversees together with the adviser, the refinement of the
final paper by checking whether the suggestions given by the panel were
incorporated;
5. Over all, the coordinator enforces the communal decision of the thesis
committee in the research proposal deliberations, in the defense, and in the
improvement/refinement of the thesis.
