CHAPTER 9 : SOLID GEOMETRY

1. Geometric solids are three dimensional

shapes that have length, breadth and height.2.
Examples of geometric solids include cubes,
cuboids,cylinders,pyramids,cones and spheres.3
. The layout or the net of a geometric is a two
dimensional shapes that isobtained by
opening up the geometric solid.

Solid Geometry
3. Volume is the measurement of a three
dimensional space.
i.

Volume of a cube = length x breadt

h x height (length=breadth=height)

Find the volume of the following cubes

Example:
Volume= 3cm x 3cm x 3cm
= 9cm2 x 3cm
= 27cm3
Exercise:
1.Volume=1cm x 1cm x 1cm
=1cm2 x 1cm
= 1cm3
2.Volume = 4cm x 4cm x4cm
= 16cm2 x 4cm
= 64cm3
3.Volume= 2mm x 2mm x 2mm
= 4mm2 x 2mm
= 8mm3

Solid Geometry
ii.

Volume of a cuboid = length x

breadth x height

Find the volume of the following

cuboids
Example:
Volume= 6cm x5cm x 4cm
= 30cm2 x 4cm
= 120cm3

Exercise:

1. Volume = 10cm x 3cm x 11cm

= 30cm2 x 11cm
= 330cm

2.Volume= 1.5m x 1m x 0.2 m

= 1.5m 2x 0.2m
= 0.3m3

3.4cm = (4 x 10) mm
= 40mm
Volume= 9mm x 40mm x 9mm
= 360mm2 x 9mm
= 3240mm3

4. Solving problems.
Example :
The figure above shows a cuboid.
Given that the volume of the cuboid is
250cm3, find the height of the cuboid.
Volume = length x breadth x height
250 =55height
Height = 250 cm 3 devide 25 cm 2
= 10 cm.
The height of the cuboid is 10 cm.

1.The figure above shows a cuboid of volume

240 cm3. Find the breadth of the cuboid.

The breadth of the cuboid

= 240 cm3 8cm 5cm
=30cm2 5cm
= 6cm

The breadth of the cuboid is 6cm.

2.The figure above shows a container of

volume 512 m3. Find the value of .
Volume of L = 512m3 8m 8m
= 64m 8m
= 8m

The value of L is 8m.

3. A box is in the form of a cuboid 40 cm long,
30 cm wide and 25cm high. How many cubes,
of edge 5cm each can be packed into the
box?
Volume of a box is in the form of a cuboid
= 40cm x 30cm x 25cm
= 1200cm2 x 25cm
= 30000cm3
Volume of a cube = 5cm x 5cm x5cm
= 25cm2 x 5cm
=125cm3

30000cm3 125cm
= 240
240 cubes of edge 5cm each can be
packed into the box.

4.The figure above shows the layout of a cube

which is made of metal. If the cube is formed,
find its volume.
2m 4 = 0.5m
Volume of the cube = 0.5m x 0.5m x 0.5m
= 0.25m2 x 0.5m
= 0.125m3

5.The volume of the cuboid above is

equivalent to the total volume of 6 cubes
each of sides 3 cm. Find the value of .
The total volume of 6 cubes each of sides 3cm
= ( 3cm X 3cm X 3cm ) x 6
= ( 9cm2 x 3cm ) x 6
= 27 cm3 x 6
= 162 cm3

The value of of the cuboid

= 162cm3 3cm 6cm
= 54cm2 6cm
= 9cm

The value of of the cuboid is 9 cm.
