Doyne of Mendham Borough, CEO and
founder of The BlinkNow
Foundation, with the 2015

Award.
Doyne was recognized
for her humanitarian efforts

By winning the top

honor, Doyne will receive a
$100,000 grant to continue
her work with The BlinkNow Foundation. The annual CNN Hero award
ceremony took place at
New Yorks American Museum of Natural History.
Maggie attended the event
with, BlinkNow co-founder,
Top Malla.
The CNN Hero award
show, scheduled to air Sun.,
Dec. 6, marked the conclusion of a voting competition
that began on Oct. 8. Maggie competed against nine
other nominees through a
global contest that ran
through Nov. 15. Fans supported their favorite heroes
by casting their votes
through Facebook and on
the CNNHeroes.com website.
Im so honored by this
prestigious award, says
Doyne. I want to thank all
of my little heroes. I draw
all of my inspiration from
them. My co-founder, Top
Malla, my amazing staff at

BlinkNow and our incredible network of donors and

everyone who has had faith
in the vision. I also want to
thank the Kopila Valley faculty members and our team
of aunties and uncles who
keep us healthy, safe and
fed.
A huge thank you to
my Nepali Family, continues Doyne. Your beauty
and charm won me over at
18. Thank you for embracing me and allowing me to
represent you with this

award.
After Doynes senior
year at Mendham High
School, she decided to set
off and see the world. Four
countries and 20,000 miles
later, she found herself
trekking through the Himalayas and walking on dirt
roads through povertystricken villages in Nepal.
During this time, Doyne
met a six-year-old girl
named Hima who was
breaking stones in a dry
riverbed and selling them to

earn money for her family.

Doyne was shocked by
what she saw and decided
to enroll Hima into school
by paying for her tuition,
uniform, and books. Doyne
started to help a few more
children, and one by one
witnessed their young lives
being transformed. Over the
next two years, Doyne
made her dream of building
a safe, clean, stable home
for these suffering children
a reality. She purchased

Pet O2 Masks Help Save Furry Friends

By Jane Primerano
ften house fires start when the family isnt at home. The human family, that is.
Sometimes pets are home alone and
even when they arent they may panic and
hide when the house fills with smoke, according to Renee Coughlin of Canine Company, an invisible fence company based in
Wilton, CT. They dont know to run out of
the house and up to 150,000 pets die in fires
each year, according to the companys website. Most pet fire fatalities are from smoke
inhalation.
The firm donates specially-designed pet
oxygen masks for use in pet rescues. Regular oxygen masks for humans dont work
for dogs, making it difficult to revive a canine suffering from smoke inhalation.
Ralston Engine Co. in Mendham Twp.
received three sets of these masks in October, according to Deborah Bennetts of the
Canine Company. They were requested by
Assistant Chief John McDonough, she said.
The company has three trucks, so each
truck now has a set of masks. Each set contains three sizes that fit many pets.

Although the Canine Company specializes in care for dogs, the masks fit other animals such as cats and rabbits as well. The
masks accommodate even the largest dogs,
according to the companys literature.
The donations are part of the Project
Breathe initiative launched by the Invisible
Fence brand. Donations are made across the
country.
Across New Jersey, the Canine Company has donated more than 100 sets of
masks to 34 fire and rescue teams, according to a press release.
Roxbury Township received three sets.
They were accepted for the fire department
by the township council at its Nov. 10 meeting, according to Lisa Spring, township finance officer. Calls to the main fire
department number were not returned, so it
isnt clear which fire companies received
them. The value of the donation was not
noted, Spring said.
Mendhams other fire company, Brookside, has a few masks purchased out-ofpocket about five years ago, according to
Chief Peter Dwyer. He said only two of
their engines carry them. The company also

has a mini-pumper and a utility truck and,

ideally, they would have mask sets as well,
Dwyer said.
We have had multiple animals saved on
our side of town, he said.
Other fire companies that received
masks are Denville, Jefferson Township,
Lincoln Park, Rainbow Lakes and

Riverdale. Also donated were special decals

that can be affixed to the front door of a
window to alert firefighters there are pets
in the home.
Canine Company also provides other
supplies to pet owners and operates a mobile grooming service.

Mendham Fire Department

To Host Tree Bonfire Celebration

he Mendham Fire Department plans

to hold its 12th night Christmas Tree
Bonfire Celebration on Sun., Jan 10,
at 6:30 p.m., at Borough Park.
The event will feature fun for the whole
family; including holiday music and hot
chocolate while offering everyone one last
toast to the holiday season.
To further assist Borough residents, the
Mendham Fire Department will pick up
trees and bring them to the pile at Borough
Park. The pick-up service is open to Borough residents only. Residents who wish to
have their tree picked up can go to mendhamfd.org/trees and fill out a form along
with making a donation to the Mendham
Fire Department. Residents who fill out
forms must have their trees curbside by 9
a.m. on Sun., Jan.10. For more information
on the event, go to mendhamfd.org/trees.
The Mendham Fire Department also offers some Holiday Safety Tips for residents.
Once the Christmas tree is at home, make
a fresh cut across the trees base and immediately place in water. Keep the trees water
container full at all times, checking the
water level daily.

Be extra careful with electricity, all open

flames and other heat sources during the
holidays.
Check all Christmas tree lights, other
electric decorations and electrical appliances
for wear, like frayed cords. Do not use
lights, decorations or appliances with worn
electrical cords. Use only UL approved electrical decorations and extension cords.
Place the Christmas tree well away from
heat registers, space heaters, fire places,
wood stoves, televisions, computer monitors
and other heat sources.
Place the Christmas tree clear of doors to
keep the emergency escape route clear of
trees, packages and furniture.
Unplug tree lights and other decorations
when out of the room or sleeping.
Mendham Fire Department has been
serving the community since 1905. Its membership has always been, and still is, comprised of volunteers from the local
community. Serving and protecting roughly
5,000 people living in an area of six square
miles, the department responds to an average of 200 calls per year. For more information, visit mendhamfd.org.

Fire Department Shares Safety Holiday Tips

ith the onset of the holiday season, it is important to focus on

fire safety and prevention. The
celebration of the season brings with it increased usage of electric lights, decorations,
candles, and the ever popular Christmas
tree, all of which can be potential fire hazards. Additionally, cooking fires increase
during the holidays as families and friends
gather to celebrate. By following general
fire safety precautions, potential holiday
fires, deaths, and injuries remain preventable.
Whats a traditional Christmas morning
scene without a beautifully decorated tree?
If the household includes a natural tree in its

festivities, take to heart the sales persons

suggestion Keep the tree watered.
Christmas trees account for hundreds of
fires annually. Typically, shorts in electrical
lights or open flames from candles, lighters
or matches start tree fires. Well-watered
trees are not a problem. A dry and neglected
tree can be.
When selecting a tree for the holidays
makes sure needles on fresh trees are green
and hard to pull back from the branches, and
the needles should not break if the tree has
been freshly cut. The trunk should be sticky
to the touch. Old trees can be identified by
bouncing the tree trunk on the ground. If
many needles fall off, the tree has been cut

savings of $5,000. The local Nepalese community, led by BlinkNow co-founder Top
Malla, helped pour the homes foundation.
Doyne had many supporters from Mendham, and in 2008, Kopila Valley Childrens
Home opened. Kopila is now home to 50
children ranging in age from 17 months to
18 years old. In 2010, the Kopila Valley
School was built out of locally harvested
bamboo and is currently bustling with 400
children from Surkhet and surrounding
areas. Many of these children are the first
in their families to attend school.
A Health Clinic and a Womens Center
for the Kopila Valley community was also
established and currently, construction is
under way for a new, environmentally
friendly school campus.

The BlinkNow Foundation provides an

education and a loving, caring home for orphaned, impoverished and at-risk children;
community outreach to reduce poverty, empower women, improve health, and encourage sustainability and social justice.
Doyne says, There is no time to waste.
If you are educated and free, empowered
and safe, use your power, and your gifts to
help the rest of our human family. We cant
lose site of the task at hand. We all have the
power to change the world in the blink of
an eye. I want my project to be a model for
what other people can do around the world.

too long and, has probably dried out, and is

a fire hazard.
Do not place the tree close to a heat
source, including a fireplace or heat vent.
The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to
be more easily ignited by heat, flame or
sparks. Be careful not to drop or flick cigarette ashes near a tree. Do not put a live tree
up too early or leave it up for longer than
two weeks. Keep the tree stand filled with
water at all times.
When disposing a tree, never put tree
branches or needles in a fireplace or woodburning stove! For a donation, Mendham
Fire Department will gladly pick up the
Christmas tree and place it on the pile at the
Borough Park for this years annual 12th
Night Celebration.
Regarding holiday lights make sure to
maintain them. Inspect holiday lights each
year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the
insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and
excessive kinking or wear before putting
them up. Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory.
Do not overload electrical outlets. Do not

link more than three light strands, unless the

directions indicate it is safe. Connect strings
of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Make sure to
periodically check the wires they should
not be warm to the touch. Do not leave holiday lights on unattended!
For holiday decorations, use only nonflammable decorations. All decorations
should be nonflammable or flame-retardant
and placed away from heat vents.
Never put wrapping paper in the fireplace. Wrapping paper in the fireplace can
result in a very large fire, throwing off dangerous sparks and embers that may result in
a chimney fire.
If using a metallic or artificial tree, make
sure it is flame retardant.
Avoid using lit candles. If using lit candles, make sure they are in stable holders
and place them where they cannot be easily
knocked down. Never leave the house with
candles burning.
Never put lit candles on a tree. Do not go
near a Christmas tree with an open flame
candles, lighters or matches.

Boys Soccer Team State Champs After 46 Years

By Josh Lashley
n so many ways, this was a season to
remember for the West Morris Mendham High School boys soccer program-and not just because they were
highly successful and competitive against
very strong opponents.
The Minutemen were, in every sense of
the word champions. Through both good
times and tough times, the Minutemen
stood tall as a team and they ultimately
prevailed.
It wasnt at all easy, as attaining tremendous goals is supposed to be challenge.
But, when all was said and done, the Minutemen reached the very pinnacle of the
sport at the high school level in this state.
Mendham ultimately won the NJSIAA
State Group 3 championship this fall with
a 4-0 victory over Toms River South in
the State finals on Nov. 22 in Union.
The Minutemen also won the North 2
Group 3 Sectional title and ended the season
with a sparkling overall record of 18-5-1.

Russ Raffay, the deservedly proud

head coach for Mendham recalls which
games showed the true character of the
student-athletes who comprised the Minutemen roster.
Several games stand out, Raffay
said. The first was when Julian Montilus
entered the locker room hours after his
mother had passed and wanted to playthat was against Ridge, a 1-0 win, on Sept.
26. He scored the game winning goal. Our
loss to Randolph, 1-0, on Oct. 22, near the
end of the season seemed to have refocused our team for their run through the
states. Our 4-0 win against a favored
South Plainfield team in the semifinal
round of the States [stands out as do] our
wins against Hopewell Valley for the State
Sectional Championship, 2-1, on Nov.13;
Old Tappan for the North Championship,
2-1 on Nov. 17; and our State win against
Toms River South.
Its not at all surprising, yet definitely
worth mentioning that the Minutemen

were propelled by outstanding leadership

this year.
Julian was our emotional leader this
year, Raffay said. He had 19 goals and
five assists. Christian Pedercini was the
leader at the midfield position. A captain,
Zach Bible was our goalie with 13.5
shutouts. Jordan Auriemma and Jack Vispoli, captain, were the anchors of our defense. Matt Hanks, captain, was the player
who would always provide the spark for
the team with his speed and toughness.
Dillon Wintz was a captain and always
seemed to calm the team down.
Bible was the most surprising this
season. He was big in the nets and was
much improved over last year. Three key
underclassmen contributed very heavily.
Jack Chernow, junior defender never left
the field all season. Steve Ryan, sophomore midfielder filled in when Jack Herb
broke his foot. Jared Beneducci junior
midfielder scored two goals in the State
final game. Herb was a senior transfer

from California this season who immediately earned a starting role.

Mendham had a record of 4-2-1 and
placed second in the Northwest Jersey
Athletic Conference United Division.
Our entire program's record this year
from [ninth through 12th grade] was 527-1, Raffay said. Our ninth graders won
the Delbarton Tournament, our JV team
was undefeated and we have four solid returning varsity players-three were starters
in the State final game.
This was the first state championship
in 46 years. We brought back Mendham's
first coach, Bob Lash to talk to the boys
before the Sectional final game and we
brought back several former players to
talk about the history of the program and
what a State championship would mean to
all who wore the Mendham uniform. I
also have to mention the coaching staff,
Mace Teitelbaum, Justin Driesse, Kathy
Kremins and Lindsay Schartner were key
factors to our success.''

Local Dental Office Sends Halloween Treats To Americans Overseas

taste of Halloween is being enjoyed

by U.S. servicemen and servicewomen, thanks to the dentists and
staff at Jockey Hollow Dentistry LLC and
Operation Jersey Cares in Mendham.
Its the sixth year that the family-oriented dental office has purchased candy
from area trick-or-treaters. Dr. M. Corey
Johnson and Dr. Karen Fenichel say the
program reduces the amount of candy kids
consume and allows the troops to enjoy a
bit of Halloween themselves while they
share some of the goodies with children
they see in the course of their duties.
Halloween means lots of candy all at
once, said Fenichel. Children dont need
to eat all the sweets they bring home. Not
eating all that candy will prevent a lot of
cavities, and sending it to our heroes overseas will give our troops something to

enjoy.
The team at Jockey Hollow Dentistry
filled 27 boxes with candy, totaling about
1,000 pounds. Operation Jersey Cares, a
Somerville-based group of veterans and
others who support American military personnel, picked up the candy. Members will
repackage the treats and send them overseas. Over the past six years, the practice
has sent more than a ton and half of candy
to American servicepeople.
Its feels good to do something for
those serving our country and for our
younger patients, added Johnson.
Trick-or-treaters were invited to bring up
to eight pounds of candy to Jockey Hollow
Dentistry and sell it for $1 a pound.
Fenichel said she became involved with the
candy buy-back program six years ago because many of the families at Jockey Hol-

military.
Im told the troops love getting the
candy, she said. Packages like these are
great reminders from home that were
thinking of them and that we appreciate

everything theyre doing. I also understand

that the troops enjoy some of the candy, but
they also give some of it to the children in
the villages where winning hearts is as important as winning military victories.

Simple Advice For Preparing Your

House For The Market

f you are planning to list your home for

sale in the next two months or the next
two years the time to start planning is
now. As soon as you put the property on
the market, it becomes a commodity. You
want to make your commodity as attractive
as possible to the buyers. There are a number of easy, inexpensive steps to ready your
home for the market. First, make sure the
home is clean ~ spotlessly clean. Hire an
outside service for a deep cleaning if necessary but make sure no corner is left untouched. This goes for inside of appliances
~ especially the oven~ and the windows.
The home also needs to smell clean. Enlist
a trusted friend to identify any unpleasant
odors to which you may be nose blind.

Next, clear the clutter. Streamline your living spaces as much as possible from the
cabinets, to the book shelves, to the closets.
No matter the size of your home, it should
look as though it has enough space for
everything. Complete your deferred maintenance projects. Cleaning gutters, touching up paint and fixing faucets will go a
long way with a buyer. Dont forget the
bathrooms too! Lastly, check out your curb
appeal. No matter what time of year you
decide to market the home make sure your
home stands out from the others, in a good
way! Decorate seasonally; keep the outside
neat and the entrance welcoming. For more
tips and market evaluation of your home

Newspaper Company Goes Full Circle, Doubles In Size, Returns Home

By Cheryl Conway
ith a new year comes change, like a different
office for New View Media Group LLC.

But for Joe Nicastro and Mary Lalama of Flanders,

co-owners with Darwin Oordt of Cherry Hill, they return
to the office where the company first started a dozen
years ago. Coming home is a wonderful feeling for them,
not only to return to the original office, but in the literal
sense that it is located where they dwell in Mt. Olive
Township.
On Mon., Nov. 16, New View Media Group moved
from its East Hanover office to Lakeview Plaza at 1 Old
Wolfe Rd, suite 205, in Budd Lake. The company had
been in East Hanover since April when it had merged
with the Marketeer, which had been headquartered there
for for about 15 years after being in Livingston since 1978.
What a nice homecoming it has been for Nicastro and
Lalama.
The lease was up and being from Mt. Olive and a
councilman I wanted to bring my business to my hometown, says Nicastro. From a personal view it is close
to home for me and Mary and our employees that come
in on a daily basis. I am very happy to be back in Mt.
Olive close to home.
While the current location is just temporary, Nicas-

tros plan is to purchase a different building in town

eventually.
We are in the process of purchasing a building and
needed a temporary place, says Nicastro. The address
we are at now is the same address that we moved to when
we started the papers in 2004. We had started the Mt.
Olive Weekly back then and found that location. It was
available once again.
Nicastros plan is we are looking at a small building
along Route 46 that we feel would be a perfect home and
give great exposure to the business.
For New View Media Group, 2015 has been a tremendous year of growth.
With a current circulation of about 159,000 homes
from as far west as Hackettstown to as far east as Cedar
Grove, New View Media Group has grown from eight
monthly papers this time last year and plans to hold
steady with 15 papers moving into 2016.
On April 1, they had formed a partnership with Oordt,
owner of the Marketeer, a free shopper type supplement.
They changed their name from MJ (My Jersey) Media to
New View Media with The idea that we have a new
view on media, says Nicastro.
All community news, from schools to government,
people, organizations, places of worship, libraries, nonprofit organizations, volunteer services, childrens

groups, scouts, fundraisers and more are featured in the

free monthly papers. The companys philosophy is to
showcase all the good, positive news that surrounds its
readers.
New View Media Groups publications, moving forward, include Mt. Olive News, Hackettstown News,
Roxbury News, Randolph News, Black River News,
Morristown News, Mendham News, Madison News,
Chatham News, Livingston News, Hanover News, Caldwell News, Verona/Cedar Grove News, Millburn/Short
Hills News and East Hanover/Florham Park News.
As far as continued growth, Nicastro says We are in
the middle of reevaluating the papers to see where and
when other expansions would make sense.
Offering free publications to all residences and businesses, the company depends on paid advertising. Contact Nicastro at 800-691-7549 or joe@newviewmg.com.
New View Media Group also invites the community
to help share any positive news with its neighbors by
sending all story ideas and press releases to
editor@newviewmg.com.
Publications can also be viewed online at www.mypaperonline.com. For more information and publication
deadlines, visit www.newviewmediagroup.com.

Notable Events From 2015

he dawn of a new year is not only a

great time to look ahead and make
plans for the future, but its also a
great time to reflect on the previous 12
months. The following are some notable
events from 2015.
Just seven days into the new year, a terrorist attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo shocks the world.
Twelve people, including several cartoonists and two police officers, are killed,
while five others suffer critical injuries. The
attacks are later linked to the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, which reportedly ordered the attacks in retaliation for the
publications caricatures of the Prophet
Muhammad.
United States President Barack Obama
and Cuban President Raul Castro meet in
early April, marking the first time in more
than half a century the two countries leaders met face-to-face. Less than two months
later, the United States removes Cuba from
its list of state sponsors of terrorism, moving one significant step closer to restoring
full diplomatic relations between the two
countries.
Ireland becomes the first country to le-

galize same-sex marriage in a national referendum on May 22. Roughly 62 percent of

voters approve changing the countrys constitution to allow same-sex marriage, a vote
that comes 22 years after the Irish government decriminalized homosexuality.
Just one day after American Independence Day, the United States Womens National Team wins the Womens World Cup
in Vancouver, British Columbia. The game
is a rout, as American Carli Lloyd scores a
hat trick in the first three minutes of the
game en route to leading her team to a 5-2
victory over Japan. Lloyds hat trick was
the first such feat in Womens World Cup
Final history.
Alexis Tsipras wins a snap election on
September 20 to once again become Prime
Minister of Greece. The elections come
roughly one month after Tsipras announces
his resignation as a result of intraparty defections that have cost him his majority in
the Greek parliament.
The Chicago Cubs clinch a postseason
series at Wrigley Field for the first time
ever when they defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 to win one of two National League
Division Series.

Friends Of Thomas Edison NHP Help

Preserve Victorian- Dickens Era Landmarks In West Orange

By Michele Guttenberger
he hallmark years of Thomas Edisons life were
at the center of the Dickens Victorian era the
reign of Queen Vitoria (1837 1901). Charles
Dickens published A Christmas Carol four years before
Thomas Edison was born. Charles Dickens had become
the influentially renowned author of his time who tapped
into the social conscious of the Victorian age that marveled over the wonder of modern inventions and believed
in mindfulness to the plight of the poor. The inventions
of Thomas Edison would become significant milestones
in the timeline of the Victorian era. And every well-read
American home would also have the works of Britains
Charles Dickens in their own family library. Such was
true of the Edison home. The style and fashion of the Victorian era is paralleled to the early life of Thomas Edison
and his family.
Thomas Edison made two important real estate purchases in West Orange in the last decades of the 19th
Century. It was in West Orange where he developed his
own plans to build a state of the art factory and research
laboratory and just a mile away he acquired the Glen-

National

mont - a gorgeous fully furnished Queen Anne style Victorian mansion in the gated community of Llewellyn
Park. Edison, a 39 year old widower and father of three
young children married Mina Miller in 1886. Glenmont
was the wedding gift to his 19 year old bride. Both Glenmont and Edisons factory lab became legendary early
modern American landmarks and on Sept. 5, 1963 the
National Park Service combined Edison's home and laboratory into a single national park called Edison National
Historic Site.
Many groups and organizations are dedicated to preserving the history of Thomas Edison but, the members
of Thomas Edison NHP, FoTENHP, has a unique passion
that dedicates their volunteer efforts in preserving the
physical structure, grounds and fixtures of these two
landmark locations. It is this group that has raised funds
to repair the stained glass window at Glenmont, been involved in the spring plantings at the estate grounds and
participated in making the Glenmont historically decorative for Christmas Holiday visitors.
This community of friends of Thomas Edison has
been fundraising for these restoration projects since

1954. They have fostered the spirit of this era which includes donning on their best Victorian attire for these festive events. The goal this year is to raise funds for the
factory site. Their focus is on making the heavy machine
shop operational again. The main line shaft is in need of
significant repair. For those desiring to help preserve
these landmarks of NJs awe-inspiring legacies, consider
joining FoTENHP or make a contribution online at
www.foedison.org. FoTENHP is a non-profit organization and contributions are tax deductible.
Visit the Victorian Glenmont bedecked for the Christmas Holiday that revisits Edison familys Christmas celebrations. Go to the visitor center at the Laboratory
Complex, 211 Main Street, to get a vehicle pass for Glenmont. Tickets for house tour are on a limited first-come
first-served basis from the Laboratory Visitor Center
starting at 10 a.m. on Fri., Sat. and Sun. A ticketed tour
is the process to enter the house.
Visit the Thomas Alva Edison Museum, Wed. through
Sun., 10 a.m. 4 p.m. Admission is $10. Visit
http://www.nps.gov/edis for more details.
